We present a new method to determine contraction kernels for the construction of graph pyramids. the new method works with undirected graphs and yields a reduction factor of at least 2.0. this means that with our method the number of vertices in the subgraph induced by any set of contractible edges is reduced to half or less by a single parallel contraction. Our method yields better reduction factors than the stochastic decimation algorithm, in all tests. the lower bound of the reduction factor becomes crucial with large images. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

the principle of maximum entropy is a powerful framework that can be used to estimate class posterior probabilities for pattern recognition tasks. In this paper, we show how this principle is related to the discriminative training of Gaussian mixture densities using the maximum mutual information criterion. this leads to a relaxation of the constraints on the covariance matrices to be positive (semi-) definite. thus, we arrive at a conceptually simple model that allows to estimate a large number of free parameters reliably. We compare the proposed method with other state-of-the-art approaches in experiments with the well known US Postal Service handwritten digits recognition task. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

the paper discusses a structured light setup for fast, one-shot 3D acquisition. the projection pattern consists of equidistant, vertical stripes. the main problem is the determination of the stripe-boundaries. they are extracted with sub-pixel accuracy by a pattern-specific snake. An initialization procedure yields the rough contours. Sub-pixel accuracy is reached through an iterative relaxation process. the labeling problem is automatically solved if all boundaries are located. Interpolation guarantees that the correct number of boundaries is initialized. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

In many face recognition tasks the pose and illumination conditions of the probe and gallery images are different. In other cases multiple gallery or probe images may be available, each captured from a different pose and under a different illumination. We propose a face recognition algorithmwhic h can use any number of gallery images per subject captured at arbitrary poses and under arbitrary illumination, and any number of probe images, again captured at arbitrary poses and under arbitrary illumination. the algorithm operates by estimating the Fisher light-field of the subject’s head fromthe input gallery or probe images. Matching between the probe and gallery is then performed using the Fisher light-fields. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

this research focuses on vision guided autonomous steering of a wheeled vehicle and tries to implement elementary recognition and learning abilities. While other researchers mainly focussed on using neural networks (e.g. [1], [2], [3], [4]) or explicit modelling of vehicle and environment (e.g. [5],[6],[7]) we established a system which classifies the video information and the vehicle behaviour into patterns and uses a very quick pattern Matching Algorithm to decide on the required interactions with the environment (i.e. issuance of steering commands ) in order to autonomously steer a vehicle Within our research, such capabilities of driving by pattern Matching got successfully implemented but the quality of the driving behaviour is strongly dependant on knowledge on how to react in certain driving situations. Any feedback on the appropriateness of the driving behaviour is delayed and unspecific in relation to single issued steering commands. therefore, a further central element in this research is a machine learning algorithm learning by reinforcement based on noisy and delayed rewards. An initial Reinforcement Learning algorithm (e.g. [8], [9]) has been implemented which shows very promising results for creating a system which autonomously steers a car purely based on visual information and even self-improves driving behaviour over time. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Given the fundamental matrix between a pair of images taken by a nonstationary projective camera with constant internal parameters, we show how to use the two independent Kruppa equations in order to explicitly cut down the number of parameters of the Kruppa matrix KKT by exactly two. thus, we derive a procedure which results in a closed formula for the Kruppa matrix that depends on exactly three remaining parameters. this formula allows an easy incorporation of the positivity constraint and admits of an interpretation in terms of the image of the horopter. We focus on the general case where the camera motion is unknown and not restricted to some special type. Solutions of the Kruppa equations given three fundamental matrices have been attempted in the past by iterative numerical methods that are searching in multidimensional spaces. As an application of the reduced Kruppa matrix mentioned above we also outline how this problem can be analytically reduced to the determination of the real, positive roots of a polynomial of 14-th degree in one variable. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

In this work we present an appearance-based 3-D Face recognition approach that is able to recognize faces in video sequences, independent from face pose. For this we combine eigen light-fields with probabilistic propagation over time for evidence integration. Eigen light-fields allow us to build an appearance based 3-D model of an object;probabilistic methods for evidence integration are attractive in this context as they allow a systematic handling of uncertainty and an elegant way for fusing temporal information. Experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach. We tested this approach successfully on more than 20 testing sequences, with 74 different individuals. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

this paper deals with parallelization and implementation aspects of PDE based image processing models for large cluster environments with distributed memory. As an example we focus on nonlinear isotropic diffusion filtering which we discretize by means of an additive operator splitting (AOS). We start by decomposing the algorithm into small modules that shall be parallelized separately. For this purpose image partitioning strategies are discussed and their impact on the communication pattern and volume is analyzed. Based on the results we develop an algorithmic implementation with excellent scaling properties on massively connected low latency networks. Test runs on a high–end Myrinet cluster yield almost linear speedup factors up to 209 for 256 processors. this results in typical denoising times of 0.5 seconds for five iterations on a 256 × 256 × 128 data cube. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

Head detection is an important, but difficult task, if no restrictions such as static illumination, frontal face appearance or uniform background can be assumed. We present a system that is able to perform head detection under very general conditions by employing a 3D measurement system namely a structured light distance measurement. An algorithm of head detection from sparse 3D data (19x19 data points) is developed that reconstructs a 3D surface over the image plane and detects head hypotheses of ellipsoidal shape. We demonstrate that detection and rough localization is possible in up to 90% of the images. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.

this paper is based on the work carried out in the framework of the Verbmobil project, which is a limited-domain speech translation task (german-English). In the final evaluation, the statistical approach was found to perform best among five competing approaches. In this paper, we will further investigate the used statistical translation models. A shortcoming of the single-word based model is that it does not take contextual information into account for the translation decisions. We will present a translation model that is based on bilingual phrases to explicitly model the local *** will show that this model performs better than the single-word based *** will compare monotone and non-monotone search for this model and we will investigate the benefit of using the sum criterion instead of the maximum approximation. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2002.
