A two-layer perceptron feedforward backpropagation network architecture with a minimum number of hidden neurons is designed using the backpropagation training algorithm for a noncomplex application, namely, controlling a plant inventory system. the design objective is to determine the number of hidden neurons and what type of data must be entered to get the backpropagation algorithm started. the convergence of the algorithm within a reasonable amount of time is sought. Test results are promising.

An application of the radial basis function network to seismic waveform classification is presented. the network performs generalization and discrimination of input patterns using an external teacher. Modifications to this scheme are described. they include: (1) changing the size of the spheres; (2) using a random walk scheme during testing; (3) gradually decreasing the initial radii to avoid overlap of two distinct regions; (4) a conflict resolution mechanism; and (5) a simple means of decreasing the sphere radius. the applications to seismic signals include using the moments over a sliding window and the first several points of a wavelet. the speed of training of this network exceeds that of backpropagation with the same error rate.

the new SHDT Stratigraphic High Resolution Dipmeter Tool has been specifically designed to treat sedimentary problems. this is achieved chiefly thanks to correlations done on two dip curves taken horizontally 3 cm. apart on each of the four tool arm pads, yielding a density of results up to one full order of magnitude higher than with conventional hardware and processing. An improved sonde velocity correction, using accelerometer data to compute instantaneous sonde speed and length of travel along the borehole, greatly increases the coherence of the results and helps salvage data affected by severe hole conditions. three independent dip computations are available with the SHDT processing chain. the Means-Square Dips, taken from pad-to-pad correlations using conventional techniques of cross-correlation, respond essentially to major structural events. the level of confidence in the results benefits additionnally from the extra redundancy provided in the plane-fitting routine by the two button electrodes from each pad. the Continuous Side-by-Side Dips, computed by pairing twin electrode correlations of adjacent pads at any depth, respond to the intimate bedding structure of the formation, thanks to the fine electrode spacing used (3 cm). the Local Dips, computed from pad-to-pad correlations using a pattern recognition scheme, reflect spot, unrepetitive events like erosive surfaces or breaks in the depositional sequence. Detailed sedimentary analysis using Dipmeter data has always been subject to the limitations of the conventional hardware. With the SHDT tool, it now becomes possible to carry-out such analyses with a vertical resolution in the order of a few inches. this in turn makes it possible to match the results with core data, and to predict the configuration of sedimentary features when no core is available. the examples shown are all from basins where the depositional models have been studied at length and are well known. Inductive Inference Machines (IlMs) attempt to identify functions given only input-output pairs of the functions. Probabilistic IlMs are defined, as is the probability that a probabilistic IlM identifies a function with respect to two common identification criteria: EX and BC. Let ID denote either of these criteria. then ID/sub prob/(p) is the family of sets of functions U for which there is a probabilistic IlM identifying every f /spl epsi/ U with probability /spl ges/ p. It is shown that for all positive integers n, ID/sub prob/(1/n) is properly contained in ID/sub prob/(1/(n+1)), and that this discrete hierarchy is the "finest" possible. this hierarchy is related to others in the literature.

It is both an honor and a pleasure to hold the 27th Annual Meeting of the german association for pattern recognition, DAGM 2005, at the Vienna U- versity of Technology, Austria, organized by the pattern recognition and Image Processing (PRIP) Group. Each paper received three reviews, upon which decisions were made based on correctness, presentation, technical depth, scienti?c signi?cance and originality. the selection as oral or poster presentation does not signify a quality grading but re?ects attractiveness to the audience which is also re?ected in the order of appearance of papers in these proceedings. the papers are printed in the same order as presented at the symposium and posters are integrated in the corresponding thematic session.
