A well-designed generic software system can be reused in many contexts by efficiently handling variability. In this paper, data structures and their application in a software architecture is presented that apply the basic idea of the Composite design pattern to keep it as simple as possible, but also as generic as possible. the application of these data structures is shown throughout a layered architecture so that software developers can follow and apply the concepts. the benefit of such an architecture is that it (1) only makes use of familiar concepts, and it is easy to read and understand by knowing especially one design pattern and (2) results in a generic software system, usable in different domains.

Testing is a vital part of the software development process. Test Case Generation (TCG) is the process of automatically generating a collection of test-cases which are applied to a system under test. White-box TCG is usually performed by means of symbolic execution, i.e., instead of executing the program on normal values (e.g., numbers), the program is executed on symbolic values representing arbitrary values. When dealing with an object-oriented (OO) imperative language, symbolic execution becomes challenging as, among other things, it must be able to backtrack, complex heap-allocated data structures should be created during the TCG process and features like inheritance, virtual invocations and exceptions have to be taken into account. Due to its inherent symbolic execution mechanism, we pursue in this paper that Constraint Logic Programming (CLP) has a promising application field in TCG. We will support our claim by developing a fully CLP-based framework to TCG of an OO imperative language, and by assessing it on a corresponding implementation on a set of challenging Java programs.

IoT systems are very complex systems with an extensive attack surface, which makes them susceptible to a large variety of threats. It is important that every component in an IoT architecture be secure, any weak point can allow an adversary to penetrate the system. We present here a pattern to add security to an IoT thing, where a “thing” is an entity that has an identity, some intelligence, is able to communicate with other entities, and is connected to the internet. We presented earlier a pattern for a Secure IoT Architecture, the Secure IoT thing pattern complements that pattern by securing one of its main components. this pattern is an addition to a set of patterns focusing on the security of IoT ecosystems.

the use of short and small micro learning units to foster learning on-demand is getting more important in the corporate context, but also beyond. the learning units are easy to learn and promoting self-regulated learning through a high degree of flexibility. the employees can decide for themselves wherever and whenever they need to learn a certain topic. As the learning units are as short as possible, they can be consumed quickly at the workplace and foster a close proximity of learning and working. However, these benefits depend on the appropriate design of the micro learning content. Since the design of the learning content is a major challenge for the responsible employees in enterprises, there is a great need for design patterns that provide support on pedagogical issues. To bridge this gap, we conducted a systematic research in theory and practice to find design solutions. Towards a pattern language for micro learning in enterprises, we present in this paper four design patterns that address the special characteristics of micro learning.

Non-verbal behavior is a central challenge in understanding the dynamics of a conversation and the affective states between interlocutors arising from the interaction. Although psychological research has demonstrated that non-verbal behaviors vary across cultures, limited computational analysis has been conducted to clarify these differences and assess their impact on engagement recognition. To gain a greater understanding of engagement and non-verbal behaviors among a wide range of cultures and language spheres, in this study we conduct a multilingual computational analysis of non-verbal features and investigate their role in engagement and engagement prediction. To achieve this goal, we first expanded the NoXi dataset, which contains interaction data from participants living in France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, by collecting session data of dyadic conversations in Japanese and Chinese, resulting in the enhanced dataset NoXi+J. Next, we extracted multimodal non-verbal features, including speech acoustics, facial expressions, backchanneling and gestures, via various pattern recognition techniques and algorithms. then, we conducted a statistical analysis of listening behaviors and backchannel patterns to identify culturally dependent and independent features in each language and common features among multiple languages. these features were also correlated with the engagement shown by the interlocutors. Finally, we analyzed the influence of cultural differences in the input features of LSTM models trained to predict engagement for five language datasets. A SHAP analysis combined with transfer learning confirmed a considerable correlation between the importance of input features for a language set and the significant cultural characteristics analyzed. © 2024 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).

the study discusses how pattern language contributes to the formation of knowledge and creation based on constructivism learning theory. From the point of view of constructivism, humans construct knowledge internally and cannot acquire it from external inputs. Building on this viewpoint, the study aims to elucidate pattern language and how it supports learning and practice. the study focuses on constructionism as proposed and discussed by Seymour Papert and his successor, Mitchel Resnick. Furthermore, it clarifies how pattern language supports learning by making, debugging, and collaborating. In this manner, pattern language can be viewed as a useful and creative tool for the future of education.

Blockchain technology has gained immense popularity over the last decade. It has transformed several industries by enabling processes to work in a secure and decentralized manner. Blockchain consists of blocks that are linked together through cryptography. Blockchain is a distributed ledger that contains a set of sequenced blocks of data. Each block records transaction data in a transparent, immutable, and secure fashion. Consensus algorithm is the key part of this technology as it is used for the decision-making process among nodes in the blockchain network. Nodes in the verifying network use consensus algorithm to reach mutual agreement about state of the blockchain whenever a new block is added. this makes it possible to accept any transaction in the blockchain. Many consensus algorithms have been proposed in the literature each having its own performance and security characteristics. In this paper, we present a pattern for one of the most widely used blockchain consensus algorithms, which is the Proof of Work (PoW) algorithm. this paper is a part of our project on blockchain architecture and patterns.

Online, synchronous events are one of the main formats that many virtual communities of practice use to engage with members of their community. However, many of these online events adopt a webinar format that typically does not support opportunities for participants to contribute or connect with one another. this paper reports on 13 design patterns that focus on both platform and event design for a more participatory format for online events. the design patterns are divided into three categories: culture and mindset, facilitation strategies, and event flow. In this paper, two patterns are introduced. the process of developing the patterns and some insights from this process are discussed.

these patterns address the fact that technical devices and cables are too present in rooms and what we can do about it. Devices blink, have cables everywhere and make a significant contribution to the design of a room. this is a state that we have learned to accept but do not have to. One goal of these patterns is that the representation of technology in various aspects is no longer just accepted but actively questioned. You will find tips on how to hide technology, hints on how to choose or build new technology and ask questions that help save technology. the main pattern “Hiding Technology” gives an overview of the topic and connects the sub patterns. the pattern “Room Evaluation” is used to get an overview about the state of a room and assist in changing habits. “Hiding Cables” is all about techniques to root cables and make them visually disappear. the pattern “Hiding LEDs” is about the annoying aspects of status and feedback mechanisms of devices and how to make them less annoying. “Hiding Hardware-Controls” discusses the need to order functions in a hierarchy and advice on how to hide less used functions in software controls. the final pattern “Hiding Whole Devices” is all about making technical devices disappear and the risks affiliated with different hiding spots.

For the analysis of physiological signals, such as ECG's, continuous blood pressure recordings etc., access to the raw signal data as well as to processed data is mandatory. Up to now, there is no computer program which allows access to raw and processed data independently from the file formats used. thus, programs have to be adapted to each new file format. the aim of the programming library ‘libRASCH’, is to provide an interface which allows the access to physiological signals in a consistent way. libRASCH is written in C and runs under Linux and Windows. the source code of libRASCH is published under the GNU LGPL. A plugin mechanism for extension of the library was implemented. Support for some widely used data formats (e.g. european Data Format) is already available. To support a new file-format, only the corresponding plugin has to be written. Moreover all programs using this library, can handle the new format without further adjustments. For other programming languages than C (e.g. Perl, Python), interfaces are available. On the libRASCH website (http://***), the source code of libRASCH and further information's are available.
