In this paper, we study the use of historical data from a fleet (i.e., a group) of equipment to improve condition monitoring and health assessment for each individual equipment (within the fleet) for maintenance purposes. In particular, we propose a fleet-based approach to estimate the tool wear of milling machines at arbitrary operating conditions (OCs) using the Monte Carlo sequential importance sampling with resampling (SIR) algorithm. Unlike traditional data-driven estimation methods which usually rely on historical data available at the same OC, the proposed method can be used when there is a lack (or insufficiency) of historical data at the target OC by leveraging on the availability of historical data at others. First, we introduce a similarity measure based on the well-known extended Taylor's tool life equation to identify other OCs (where historical data are available) that are most "similar" to the target one. We then combine historical data from these OCs to construct a suitable model for the SIR to estimate the tool wear at the OC of interest. Our experimental results on a simulated dataset show that the proposed fleet-based approach with SIR can significantly improve tool wear estimation accuracy.

In this paper, we propose a high-speed 3-D object recognition method using new feature values. Features for the object recognition method proposed in this study consist of three values. One is the Difference of Normals (DoN) feature value that has been proposed by Ioannou. the other two represent information about curvature. We use these three-dimensional features to recognize the position and pose of multiple objects stacked randomly. Because they are low-dimensional, high-speed matching can be achieved. We have also reduced the computing time needed for data matching by using only effective points selected on the basis of their estimated distinctiveness. Experimental results using actual scenes have demonstrated that the computing time is about 93 times faster than that of the conventional SHOT method. Furthermore, the proposed method achieves a 98.2% recognition rate, which is 17.9% higher than that of the SHOT method. Also, we confirmed that the proposed method achieves higher-speed matching and higher recognition success rate than the conventional methods.

Proper and uniform compaction during construction is of utmost importance for the long term performance of asphalt pavement. Variations in the conditions of freshly laid pavements require adjustment of the compaction effort in order to obtain uniform and adequate density. One of the goals of on-going research in Intelligent Compaction (IC) is the development of adaptive feedback control mechanism to adjust the compaction effort according to the field and pavement conditions. Such feedback control systems require a good understanding of compaction dynamics. In this study, a dynamical model is developed to study the interaction between a moving vibratory roller and the underlying asphalt pavement during compaction. the asphalt pavement is represented as a lumped element model with visco-elastic-plastic properties. A procedure is presented to estimate the parameters of this model from standard tests on asphalt mix conducted in the laboratory. the combined roller-pavement dynamical model is used to replicate field compaction of an asphalt pavement using a vibratory roller. Numerical simulation results indicate good agreement with results observed during compaction of pavements in the field. Comparison between the simulation results and the results collected from the actual pavement construction job show that the model could be used as a mathematical basis for the development of advanced compaction methods.

In the paper the first order sensitivity analysis is performed for a class of optimal control problems for parabolic-hyperbolic systems in which time delays appear both in the state equations and in the Neumann boundary conditions. A singular perturbation of geometrical domain of integration is introduced in the form of a circular hole. the Steklov-Poincare operator on a circle is defined in order to reduce the problem to regular perturbations in the truncated domain. the optimality system is differentiated with respect to the small parameter and the directional derivative of the optimal control is obtained as a solution to an auxiliary optimal control problem.

In this paper, the possibility of the application of the Balance-Based Adaptive Control (B-BAC) methodology to control the second order system is discussed. Conventionally, the B-BAController is based on the simplified first order dynamical model of the process, which stands as the significant limitation when the real system is of the higher order. Due to the application of the suggested quasi-cascade control structure, this constraint is removed and the superiority of this approach is presented by the simulation experiments.
