In this paper we study a problem of 3D scene reconstruction from a set of differently focused images, also known as the shape from focus (SFF) problem. Existing shape from focus methods are known to produce unstable depth estimates in areas with poor texture and in presence of strong highlights. So in this work we focus on the robustness of 3D scene structure recovery. We formulate a shape from focus problem in a Bayesian framework using Markov Random Fields and present an SFF method that yields a globally optimal surface with enforced smoothness priors. Although shape from focus has been studied for quite a long time there is no widely accepted test set for evaluation of SFF algorithms. therefore we present a test set composed of 27 image sets with hand-labeled ground truth. We quantitatively evaluate our method on this test set and present the comparison results. these results demonstrate that our method is robust to highlights and untextured regions and that it outperforms the state-of-the-art.

In this paper, we present the first multilevel implementation of the Harris-Stephens corner detector and the ORB feature extractor running on FPGA hardware, for computer vision and robotics applications. ORB is a fundamental component of many robotics applications, and requires significant computation. the design has been validated both in behavioural simulation and in implementation on an Arria V FPGA connected to a desktop PC via PCI-Express. A Linux kernel-mode driver and userspace library allow integration of the acceleration hardware into C++ programs. the device has significantly higher throughput than a CPU implementation (150 MPixel/s vs 27 MPixel/s) and a GPU implementation (40 MPixel/s), with much lower power draw (5.3 W vs 145 W). this throughput is equivalent to 72 fps at 1920 x 1080 or 488 fps at 640 x 480.

Using computer image-processing technology for animal identification has improved labour-intensive agriculture and animal husbandry efficiency and accuracy. Additionally, camera traps have provided researchers with abundant biodiversity and wildlife habitat conservation data. However, despite these advancements, there is still a need for taxonomic rank-based animal classification studies, and fewer datasets are available to train AI models based on taxonomic ranks. the importance of taxonomy was ignored by researchers and dataset creators in previous animal classification studies, which is the basis and prerequisite of classifying wild animal images. To this end, this paper presents a dataset labelled with the taxonomic ranking. the dataset is focused on Australian animals and includes 47 taxonomically significant animal species, each with a maximum of 600 manually labelled images. this dataset will contribute significantly to the field of animal identification, as it provides researchers and practitioners with a valuable tool to improve the efficiency and accuracy of animal identification, which can have significant implications for agriculture, animal husbandry, biodiversity research, and wildlife conservation.

We present a novel system for performing real-time detection of diverse visual corruptions in videos, for validating the quality of graphics units in our company. the system is used for several types of content, including movies and 3D graphics, with strict constraints on low false alert rates and real-time processing of millions of video frames per day. these constraints required novel solutions involving both hardware and software, including new supervised and weakly-supervised methods we developed. Our deployed system has enabled a 20X reduction of human effort and discovering new corruptions missed by humans and existing approaches.

In the recent development of computer graphics and avatar generation, the synthesis of attractive faces and bodies has gained interest. In cognitive psychology, it is known that the attractiveness of the whole face and facial parts changes with the duration of exposure. Also, facial expressions influence the attractiveness of the whole face and facial parts. In the present study, we investigated how attractiveness judgments for whole faces and parts with facial expressions would change with exposure time. Participants rated the attractiveness of whole faces and facial parts. the faces and face parts expressed either smiling, angry, or neutral expressions. the face stimuli were presented for either 20 ms or 1000 ms. the results showed that the attractiveness ratings of the eyes, mouth, and whole face were higher with the shorter exposure duration. However, the nose became more attractive with the longer exposure. Smiling faces tended to be rated as more attractive and angry faces as less attractive. However, this pattern did not always hold for facial parts. the present results have implications not only for understanding attractiveness judgments in humans, but also for computer graphics and avatar generation in the fields of artificial intelligence and computer vision. © 2023 IEEE.

GeoVisual Analytics often uses a wide range of visualization techniques in combination with human interactions. However, in order to improve urban planning decisions and expand the knowledge base about spatio-temporal correlations in cities, we identify high and sometimes difficult-to-overcome data and visualization complexity. therefore, users need targeted support to reduce this complexity and understand complex multidimensional data. this paper proposes an interactive 3D visualization approach for analyzing spatiotemporal correlations. Effective visual explanations in user-oriented guidance with storytelling elements support this technique. We adapt the approach of flow maps to visualize both resulting correlations and the underlying density of possible destinations from an existing geoanalytical process. Our interactive step-by-step guidance with four narratives aims to create a balance between the author and the user. We evaluated our prototype with various domain experts. the evaluation confirms our approach and improves users' understanding of data and spatio-temporal correlations in urban areas.

A new method to automatically track objects in the process of sterile pharmacy compounding is introduced. the method performs the automatic object tracking by applying a simple object detection followed by an object tracking algorithm. the advantages of the method are that it enables both single and multiple object tracking without requiring large sets of templates or training sets. the experimental results show that the method reasonably tracks the objects accurately. https://***/10.24132/CSRN.2019.2901.1.16

A city metaphor has become a popular method of visualizing properties of program code. this paper provides an overview of research projects that employ this metaphor for a wide range of software engineering tasks. Until now, projects employing the city metaphor have primarily focused on visualizing static and semi-static properties of software repositories, such as understanding how a program’s source code structure is changing over time, and who is changing what. this paper compares these existing code cities and suggests likely avenues of future research. © 2019 University of West Bohemia.
