We deal with the problem of rule interpolation and rule extrapolation for fuzzy and possibilistic systems. Such systems are used for representing and processing vague linguistic If-then-rules, and they have been increasingly applied in the field of control engineering, pattern recognition and expert systems. the methodology of rule interpolation is required for deducing plausible conclusions from sparse (incomplete) rule bases. For this purpose the well-known fuzzy inference mechanisms have to be extended or replaced by more general ones. the methods proposed so far in the literature for rule interpolation are mainly conceived for the application to fuzzy control and miss certain logical characteristics of an inference. this serves as a motivation for looking for a more flexible method that is superior to the proposed ones with respect to its general applicability to fuzzy as well as to possibilistic systems. First, a set of axioms is proposed. With this, a definition is given for the notion of interpolation, extrapolation, linear interpolation and linear extrapolation of fuzzy rules. the axioms include all the conditions that have been of interest in the previous attempts and others which either have logical characteristics or try to capture the linearity of the interpolation. A new method for linear interpolation and extrapolation of compact fuzzy quantities of the real line is suggested and analyzed in the spirit of the given definition. the method is extended to non-linear interpolation and extrapolation. Finally, the method is extended to the general case, where the input space is n-dimensional, by using the concept of aggregation operators. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

To allow advanced processing of information available on the Web, the web content necessitates semantic descriptions (metadata) processable by machines. Manual creation of metadata even in a lightweight form such as (web page) relevant terms is for us humans demanding and almost an impossible task, especially when considering open information space such as the Web. New approaches are devised continuously to automate the process. In the age of the Social Web an important new source of data to mine emerges - social annotations of web content. In this paper we utilize microblogs in particular. We present a method for relevant domain terms extraction for web resources based on processing of the biggest microblogging service to date - Twitter. the method leverages social characteristics of the Twitter network to consider different relevancies of Twitter posts assigned to the web resources. We evaluated the method in a user experiment while observing its performance for different types of web content. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Social networks, their increasing popularity reaching hundreds of million users, demand advance software architecture. Countless requests per second necessitate flexible and utmost efficiency and high performance. this article is focused on development of such a web-based service offering social functionality to end users, but from the technology point of view represents state-of-the-art in current usage of the latest technologies. those technologies mentioned further are often used for the first time in such a complex project. High volume data distribution is handled by Apache Hadoop framework together with Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) and MapReduce. therewithal, non-relational distributed database HBase and Memcached tool ensures scalability and high throughput helping with often accessed information. Inner architecture of the social subsystem has been implemented within three-layer structure (services/data access/transmission). Social subsystem among others deals with one-way (unsymmetrical) relationship generation or cancellation between users but events either. Particular system entities are allowed to add comments, follow or "like" others. In the end, testing phase, deployment and practical utilization (although the resulted solution is completely independent) is demonstrated on practical example of case study Takeplace - complex tool for event management. © 2012 Springer-Verlag.

E-learning adoption in universities is a very challenging field of Information Systems that consist of the adoption challenges at two levels - user level and institutional level. Various higher institutions of learning have come to terms with the eminent need for change in order to allow for a successful integration and impact of technology in education. the ability to cope with these changes, right from pre-to-post e-learning adoption, has been a major challenge for management of various higher education institutions (HEIs). this paper aims at revisiting the various Information Systems (IS) approaches previously employed by several studies for investigating the challenges in adopting these e-learning technologies from the user level to the institutional level in Universities, with the aim of identifying the gap between theory and practice in addressing these challenges. the review considered 13 international conference academic papers and 52 journal articles sourced from high ranked international journals in the relevant field of study, validated through a multi-step manual cross-checking based on carefully selected extraction and quality criteria. the results indicate that 37% of the reviewed papers employed the use of quantitative approach while 29% used qualitative method in their study on the current challenges faced in e-learning adoption by universities. this implies that there is a growing interest in the use of qualitative approach for research in the field of IS even though quantitative methods are still slightly dominant in this IS domain. Based on the review findings, there is a need for both practitioners and researchers to appreciate the differences between methodologies and their varying applicability. the study concludes that IS practitioners and researchers should come together to clearly redefine the scope of IS methodologies.

Recent studies show that state-space dynamics of randomly initialized recurrent neural network (RNN) has interesting and potentially useful properties even without training. More precisely, when initializing RNN with small weights, recurrent unit activities reflect history of inputs presented to the network according to the Markovian scheme. this property of RNN is called Markovian architectural bias. Our work focuses on various techniques that make use of architectural bias. the first technique is based on the substitution of RNN output layer with prediction model, resulting in capabilities to exploit interesting state representation. the second approach, known as echo state networks (ESNs), is based on large untrained randomly interconnected hidden layer, which serves as reservoir of interesting behavior. We have investigated both approaches and their combination and performed simulations to demonstrate their usefulness. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

All existing coflow scheduling algorithms compute dynamic-rate schedules that change the rates of flows during transmission. In this paper, we make a crucial finding: although dynamically adjusting the rates of flows could lead to a better coflow completion time (CCT) in theory, it would introduce additional pressures on the congestion control mechanism in the underlying network, which result in poor CCT in practice. this difference between theoretical CCT and practical CCT is further exacerbated in wide-area networks, where the topology does not provide any bisection guarantee as data center networks do. To this end, we designed a fixed-rate coflow scheduling policy called FSCO. Although in theory, the best fixed-rate schedule is usually suboptimal, it keeps the in-flight traffic relatively steady, reducing the risk of triggering congestion control. the core of FSCO is an efficient scheduling algorithm based on the classic network utilization maximization (NUM) framework. We implement a prototype of FSCO and evaluate its performance extensively using real-world topologies and coflow traces. Experimental results show that the total CCT reduces up to 30% compared to baselines while yielding up to 12× speedups compared to the solver.

Over the last four years, a community of researchers working on Grid and High Performance Computing technologies started discussing the barriers and opportunities that grid technologies must face and exploit for the development of health-related applications. this interest lead to the first Healthgrid conference, held in Lyon, France, on January 16th–17th, 2003, with the focus of creating increased awareness about the possibilities and advantages linked to the deployment of grid technologies in health, ultimately targeting the creation of a European/international grid infrastructure for health. the topics of this conference converged with the position of the eHealth division of the European Commission, whose mandate from the Lisbon Meeting was "To develop an intelligent environment that enables ubiquitous management of citizens’ health status, and to assist health professionals in coping with some major challenges, risk management and the integration into clinical practice of advances in health knowledge." In this context "Health" involves not only clinical procedures but covers the whole range of information from molecular level (genetic and proteomic information) over cells and tissues, to the individual and finally the population level (social healthcare). Grid technology offers the opportunity to create a common working backbone for all different members of this large "health family" and will hopefully lead to an increased awareness and interoperability among disciplines. the first HealthGrid conference led to the creation of the Healthgrid association, a non-profit research association legally incorporated in France but formed from the broad community of European researchers and institutions sharing expertise in health grids. After the second Healthgrid conference, held in Clermont-Ferrand on January 29th–30th, 2004, the need for a "white paper" on the current status and prospective of health grids was raised. current products, especially in the automotive sector, pose complex technical systems having a multi-disciplinary mechatronic nature. Industrial standards supporting system engineering and production typically (i) address the production phase only, but do not cover the complete product life cycle, and (ii) focus on production processes and resources rather than the products themselves. the presented approach is motivated by incorporating the impacts of the end-of-life phase of the product life cycle into the engineering phase. this paper proposes a modeling approach coming up from the Product-Process-Resource (PPR) modeling paradigm. It combines requirements on (i) respecting the product structure as a basis for the model, and (ii) incorporates repairing, remanufacturing, or up cycling within cyber-physical production systems. the proposed model called PoPAN should accompany the product during the entire life cycle as a digital shadow encapsulated within the Asset Administration Shell of a product. To facilitate the adoption of the proposed paradigm, the paper also proposes serialization of the model in the AutomationML data format. the model is demonstrated on a use-case for disassembling electric vehicle batteries to support their remanufacturing for stationary battery applications.
