Modern computing environments are evolving towards the compute continuum paradigm, which promises to manage the heterogeneity and dynamism of geographically spread computing resources, supporting the execution of distributed and pervasive applications. As a complete understanding of all the implications and challenges posed by this new paradigm is still far, we give an overview of the key features and concepts of the compute continuum and discuss the most relevant research opportunities we envision in the field.

We describe the engineering of the distributed-memory multilevel graph partitioner dKaMinpar. It scales to (at least) 8192 cores while achieving partitioning quality comparable to widely used sequential and shared-memory graph partitioners. In comparison, previous distributed graph partitioners scale only in more restricted scenarios and often induce a considerable quality penalty compared to non-distributed partitioners. When partitioning into a large number of blocks, they even produce infeasible solution that violate the balancing constraint. dKaMinpar achieves its robustness by a scalable distributed implementation of the deep-multilevel scheme for graph partitioning. Crucially, this includes new algorithms for balancing during refinement and coarsening.

the demand for large-scale computing, such as the application of AI in big data analytics and engineering simulations, has been steadily increasing. Meanwhile, many companies and individuals now own smartphones and PCs, but a significant portion of these IT assets remains underutilised, especially overnight or utilised as computing resources. this paper solves these issues by proposing to use these resources in a distributed system. this system highlights the opportunities for cost-effective and resource-efficient high-performance computing(HPC) solutions by utilising underutilised resources. the original distributed computing system framework SMPDG will be described in this paper.

One of the most time consuming, yet important tasks in academia is assessing and correcting student assignments. When it comes to programming, this task becomes even more complicated, as the evaluation involves compilation and execution correctness. In this demo, Diorthotis, a parallel, language-agnostic batch evaluator is presented which has the capacity to exploit the multiple cores available in modern processors so as to quickly compile, execute and evaluate assignments for hundreds of students only in a few seconds.

Service discovery is a vital process that enables low latency provisioning of Internet of things (IoT) applications across the computing continuum. Unfortunately, it becomes increasingly difficult to identify a proper service within strict time constraints due to the high heterogeneity of the computing continuum. Moreover, the plethora of network technologies and protocols commonly used by IoT applications further hinders service discovery. To address these issues, we introduce a novel Mobile Edge Service Discovery using the DNS (MESDD) algorithm, which uses a so-called Intermediate Discovery Code to identify suitable service instances. MESDD uses geofences for fine-grained service segmentation based on a naming scheme that identifies users' locations across the computing continuum. We deployed a real-life distributed computing continuum testbed and compared MESDD with three related methods, outperformed by 60% after eight update iterations.

We introduce a parallel mechanism for auto-scheduling data access queries in machine learning applications. Our solution combines the advantages of three individual strategies to reduce the time of query stream execution. Using bayesian network learning as a use case, we achieve several times speedup compared to the best possible strategy on two different computing servers.
