How can we ensure that Ubiquitous computing (UbiComp) research outcomes are ethical, fair, and robust? While fairness in machine learning (ML) has gained traction in recent years, it remains unexplored, or sometimes an afterthought, in the context of pervasive and ubiquitous computing. This workshop aims to discuss fairness in UbiComp research and its social, technical, and legal implications. From a social perspective, we will examine the relationship between fairness and UbiComp research and identify pathways to ensure that ubiquitous technologies do not cause harm or infringe on individual rights. From a technical perspective, we will initiate a discussion on model generalization and robustness, as well as data processing methods to develop bias mitigation approaches tailored to UbiComp research. From a legal perspective, we will examine how new policies shape our community's work and future research. Building on the success of the First FairComp Workshop(1) at UbiComp 2023, we have established a vibrant community centered around the topic of fair, robust, and trustworthy algorithms within UbiComp, while also charting a clear path for future research endeavors in this field.

Iceberg areas are not safe for transportation because based on climate changes icebergs are melting and not showing a dangerous way in sea areas. Based on the vision we can't identify all the icebergs in the ocean area. So, by using a Deep learning algorithm we can classify icebergs through satellite images. In the past decades, several machine learning algorithms are implemented for classification of the images. But our aim is to implement an application to classify the iceberg by using synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) images which are available at the Kaggle repository. The Data set was from the Statoil C-CORE East Coast of Canada. Here we classify the icebergs by using remotely sensed data. For this data, the Convolutional Neural Network is used for image classification and extraction of the features of images deeply. The CNN algorithm was implemented on the SAR images and achieved 99.8% training and 89.5% of validation accuracy with high time consumption when training the dataset. © 2023 IEEE.

Contemporarily, asia is the world's largest carbon emitter among other continents according to the recorded data, which plays an essential role in climate change. This paper introduces asia's carbon dioxide emission effect and mainly focuses on the emission prediction for the future five years based on the time series data from 1950 to 2021. Some statistical models are implemented in forecasting, including ARIMA, SARIMA, and SARIMAX models. Besides, two general machine learning models, linear regression and random forest regression would also be applicable in this paper. According to the analysis, based on the model performance matrix, the study found that the SARIMA model is the optimal model to explain and forecast the data. Specifically, it has the lowest MSE, MRSE, and MAE values and the highest AIC and BIC scores. These results shed light on guiding further exploration of carbon dioxide emission prediction in the next five years in asia. © 2023 SPIE.

Benefiting from the development of deep learning in recent years, there have been significant advancements in object detection. In smart classroom environments, student behaviors vary widely due to differences in layout, lighting, and other factors unique to each smart classroom. This variability often leads to behavior confusion when using object detection algorithms to recognize student actions, which has somewhat hindered the progress of object detection in the field of smart education. Therefore, addressing this issue is both challenging and meaningful. To tackle this problem, this paper proposes a novel framework called C2F-YOLO to eliminate ambiguities in discerning student behaviors, thereby enhancing the performance of coarse-to-fine object detection tasks in smart education settings. Specifically, our framework consists of three main parts. Firstly, we introduce a novel method about coarse-to-fine object detection framework based on YOLO, C2F-YOLO, which identifies and refines ambiguous student behaviors in a coarse-to-fine manner. Secondly, we propose the cross-stage connection module named CSCM and the multi-scale feature fusion module named FSFM. The CSCM is used to transfer features of different scales from the first stage to the second stage to learn more diverse dimensional features, while the FSFM is used to merge features of different scales from the first stages. We conducted extensive experiments on our proprietary real-world dataset to demonstrate the superiority of our proposed framework. Remarkably, we achieved impressive results without significantly increasing the parameter count. © 2024 ACM.
