In 1991 the Honeywell Technology Center began the development of large area 2D microemitter arrays for IR scene projection. Since then, 5 different types of 512x512 or larger arrays have been fabricated, all in current use. This paper will review the status, properties, and applications of these arrays. Pixel and array improvements which will lead to ultralow power consumption, very high performance, very fast 1024 square arrays are under development. A number of these efforts are described.

A broadband, low-distortion, 2:1 zoom collimator has been designed for projection of infrared scenes in the spectral region of 3.0 to 12.0 micrometers. This collimator provides dynamic scenes for the Kinetic Kill Vehicle hardware-in-the loop Simulation (KHILS) facility for testing of missile seekers and other FLIRs. This system, the Target Simulator Optical System (TSOS) is similar to the WISP Optical System already installed at KHILS by Brashear LP, but is lightweighted to allow mounting onto the outside axis of a Flight Motion Simulator. This paper explains the general requirements of the projection collimator optics and describes the system design, assembly and test. The collimator projects dynamic scenes generated by two 1024 x 1024 or 512 x 512 arrays of resistive-emitter elements. The system is composed of four off-axis, powered mirrors, a beamcombiner, spectral filters and array windows. Three of the mirrors are moveable to accommodate changing the field-of-view. Distortion is less than 1.0% at any field position.

This paper describes the use of an image query database (IQ-DB) tool as a means of implementing a validation strategy for synthetic long-wave infrared images of sea clutter. Specifically it was required to determine the validity of the synthetic imagery for use in developing and testing automatic target detection algorithms. The strategy adopted for exploiting synthetic imagery is outlined and the key issues of validation and acceptance are discussed in detail. A wide range of image metrics has been developed to achieve pre-defined validation criteria. A number of these metrics, which include post processing algorithms, are presented. Furthermore, the IQ-DB provides a robust mechanism for configuration management and control of the large volume of data used. The implementation of the IQ-DB is reviewed in terms of its cardinal point specification and its central role in synthetic imagery validation and EOSS progressive acceptance.

This paper describes the current research and development of advanced scene generation technology for integration into the I2RSS - hardware-in-the-loop (HWIL) facilities at the US Army AMRDEC at Redstone Arsenal, AL. A real-time dynamic infra-red (IR) scene generator has been developed in support of a high altitude scenario leveraging COTS hardware and open source software. The Multi-Spectral Mode Scene Generator (MMSG) is an extensible software architecture that is powerful yet flexible. The I2RSS scene generator has implemented dynamic signature by integrating the signature prediction codes along with Open Source Software, COTS hardware along with custom built interfaces. A modular, plug-in framework has been developed that supports rapid reconfiguration to permit the use of a variety of state data input sources, geometric model formats, and signature and material databases. The platform independent software yields a cost-effective upgrade path to integrate best-of-breed graphics and system architectures.

We report the IR electroluminescence in two wavelength bands, 3-4 micron (MWIR) and 8-9 micron (LWIR) regions. The epitaxial structure was grown on an n-type GaSb substrate with the MWIR quantum well (QW) region on top of LWIR QW region and a 0.5 mu m contact layer grown in between the two QW regions. We measured the light emission from the top surface of the device with different grating structures. We fabricated square mesas varying from 50 to 200 microns on a side. Both room temperature and cryogenic temperature results show emission in the wavelength regions as designed.

The concept for a new high spatial resolution, high-temperature, Dynamic Infrared Scene Projector (DISP) for generating high-speed (microsecond range) broadband (3-16 microns) IR scenery through visible pumping of DISP semiconductor scene (visible-to-infrared conversion) was developed, fabricated and tested. The principle of this new device operation and the results of our initial experimental study are reported for the first time. Key potential operating parameters of the new device prototype (based on a Germanium screen) are compared to that of modern conventional DISP engine (SBIR Emitter Array Projector).

Standard OpenGL-based rendering has sampling limitations. By default these rendering systems point sample rendered pixels. For highly resolved objects, this sampling is adequate to represent the object accurately, but when the object has a relatively small projected area that is on the order of a few pixels, the object intensity is corrupted with aliasing. hardware anti-aliasing such as multisampling provides minimal relief by offering 4, 8, or 16 samples within a single pixel. However, for hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) scene generation where accurate energy conservation of unresolved sub-pixel objects must be maintained, standard hardware anti-aliasing is not good enough. Zoom anti-aliasing(1, 2, 3) (ZAA) has been proven as a viable solution for rendering objects that would otherwise be grossly under-sampled. Techniques in the past have focused on processing the zoom window pixels in the CPU because the graphics processor unit (GPU) was not general purpose enough to support the zoom window processing. However, this is no longer the case because of the new capabilities of modem graphics processors. This paper presents a modern GPU-based zoom window approach and compares the results to a classic CPU-based approach.

The Space Systems Test Facility (SSTF) at the Arnold Engineering Development Center (AEDC) has tested interceptor, airborne, and space-based infrared sensors for over 30 years. In that time, the 7V Chamber has been the primary calibration facility at AEDC. It is used to perform sensor characterization, calibration, and mission simulation testing. The 10V Chamber has been developed to perform hardware-in-the-loop sensor testing. A crucial aspect of this testing is the accurate simulation of point-source targets. The sources used must be able to simulate the range and temperature of the simulated target for realistic testing. A detailed characterization and analysis program is conducted to ensure their radiometric fidelity. The 7V Chamber has a total of six blackbody sources. Four are used as point targets, one is a flood source, and one is a standard reference source. For every chamber pumpdown, source calibrations are performed and radiometric data are taken. The data are then used to perform uncertainty analyses. A total of four blackbody sources are used in the 10V Chamber. Two of these blackbodies are used for point targets, one is a standard reference source, and the final blackbody is a spare. All four blackbodies have been tested and compared with NIST-traceable blackbodies at AEDC. The design and testing of these sources is discussed.

Contraves Brashear Systems has designed and fabricated a low-distortion, 2:1 zoom collimator for projection of infrared scenes in the spectral region of 1.5 to 12.0 micrometers to provide dynamic scenes for the Wideband Infrared Scene Projector (WISP) for testing of missile seekers and other FLIRs. This paper explains the general requirements of the projection collimator optics and describes the system design, assembly, and test. The collimator projects dynamic scenes generated by two 512 x 512 arrays of resistive-emitter elements. The system is composed of four off-axis, powered mirrors, a beamsplitter, spectral filters and array windows. Three of the mirrors and the arrays move to accomodate changing the field-of-view. The worst-case geometric spot size (85% encircled energy) at any field position is less than 0.8 of the angular subtense of an array element for the entire zoom range. Distortion is less than 0.7% and the overlap of the two arrays is better than 0.1 pixels at any field position.
