Business systems these days need to be agile to address the needs of a changing world. Business modelling requires process management to be highly adaptable with the ability to support dynamic workflows, inter-application integration (potentially between businesses) and process reconfiguration. Designing in the ability to cater for evolution is critical to success. To handle change, systems need the capability to adapt as and when necessary to changes in users’ requirements. Using our implementation of a self-describing system, a so-called description-driven approach, new versions of data structures or processes can be created alongside older versions providing a log of changes to the underlying data schema and enabling the gathering of traceable ("provenance") data. The CRISTAL software, which originated at CERN for handling physics data, uses versions of stored descriptions to define data and workflows which can be evolved over time and thereby to handle evolving system needs. It has been customised for use in business as the Agilium-NG product. This paper reports on how the Agilium-NG software has enabled the deployment of an unique business process management solution that can be dynamically evolved to cater for changing user requirements. © 2018 Association for Computing Machinery.

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) refer to the next generation of embedded ICT systems that are interconnected, collaborative and that provide users and businesses with a wide range of smart applications and services. Software in CPS applications ranges from small systems to large systems, aka. Systems of Systems (SoS), such as smart grids and cities. CPSoS require managing massive amounts of data, being aware of their emerging behavior, and scaling out to progressively evolve and add new systems. Cloud computing supports processing and storing massive amounts of data, hosting and delivering services, and configuring self-provisioned resources. Therefore, cloud computing is the natural candidate to solve CPSoS needs. However, the diversity of platforms and the low-level cloud programming models make difficult to find a common solution for the development and deployment of CPSoS. This paper presents the architectural foundations of a cloud-centric framework for automating the development and deployment of CPSoS service applications to converge towards a common open service platform for CPSoS applications. This framework relies on the well-known qualities of the microservices architecture style, the autonomic computing paradigm, and the model-driven software development approach. Its implementation and validation is on-going at two european and national projects.

Development of composite workflow applications in science and engineering is troublesome and costly due to high heterogeneity of data representations and data access interfaces of the underlying individual components. As an effective solution we present a generic toolkit enabling domain experts to develop data models and automatically generate a self-contained data access service. We defined a custom metamodel based on Ecore which can be readily used to create domain-specific data models. Using the generated data access service, instances of the modeled data residing on heterogeneous and distributed resources, such as databases and cloud data stores, are accessible from the individual application components via a language-independent Web service interface. We discuss the framework architecture, the toolkit implementation, the deployment process, as well as the performance of the data access service. Workflow designers as target users would benefit from the toolkit by using it for rapid and cost-efficient application integration.

In this paper, we combine the Common Variability Language (CVL) and the ATL Transformation Language to customize and incorporate a generic security model into any application that requires security. Security spans a large set of concerns such as integrity, encryption or authentication, among others, and each concern needs to be incorporated into the base application in a different way and at different points of the application. We propose a set of weaving patterns using model transformations in ATL to automatically weave the security concerns with the base application in an aspect-oriented way. Since different applications require different security requirements, the security model needs to be customized before its incorporation into the application. We resolve the variability of the security properties and implement the weaving process in CVL. We use an e-voting case study to illustrate our proposal using the CVL approach.

The problems addressed bymodel-driven Engineering (MDE) approaches are increasingly complex, hence performance and scalability of model transformations are gaining importance. In previous work, we introduced LinTra, which is a platform for executing out-place model transformations in parallel. The parallel execution of LinTra is based on the Linda coordination language, where high-level model transformation languages (MTLs) are compiled to LinTra and eventually executed through Linda. In order to define the compilation modularly, this paper presents a minimal, yet suficient, collection of primitive operators that can be composed to reconstruct any out-place, unidirectional MTL.

modeling tools are traditionally delivered as monolithic desktop applications, optionally extended by plug-ins or special purpose central servers. This delivery model suffers from several drawbacks, ranging from poor scalability to difficult maintenance and the proliferation of shelfware". Objective: In this paper we investigate the conceptual and technical feasibility of a new software architecture for modeling tools, where certain advanced features are factored out of the client and moved towards the Cloud. With this approach we plan to address the above mentioned drawbacks of existing modeling tools. Method: We base our approach on RESTful Web services. Using features implemented in the existing model Analysis and Checking (MACH) tool, we create a RESTful Web service API offering model analysis facilities. We refer to it as the Hypersonic API. We provide a proof of concept implementation for the Hypersonic API using model clone detection as our example case. We also implement a sample Web application as a client for these Web services. Results: Our initial experiments with Hypersonic demonstrate the viability of our approach. By applying standards such as REST and JSON in combination with Prolog as an implementation language, we are able to transform MACH from a command line tool into the first Web-based model clone detection service with remarkably little effort.

With the growing size and complexity of systems under design, industry needs a generation of model-driven Engineering (MDE) tools, especially model query and transformation, with the proven capability to handle large-scale scenarios. While researchers are proposing several technical solutions in this sense, the community lacks a set of shared scalability benchmarks, that would simplify quantitative assessment of advancements and enable crossevaluation of different proposals. Benchmarks in previous work have been synthesized to stress specific features of model management, lacking both generality and industrial validity. In this paper, we initiate an effort to define a set of shared benchmarks, gathering queries and transformations from real-world MDE case studies. We make these case available to community evaluation via a public MDE benchmark repository.

To facilitate the collaboration in large-scale modeling scenarios, it is sometimes advisable to split a model into a set of sub-models that can be maintained and analyzed independently. Existing automated approaches to model splitting, however, suffer from insuficient consideration of the stakeholder's intentions and add a significant overhead for comprehending the created decompositions. We present a new tool that aims to create more informed model decompositions by leveraging existing domain knowledge in the form of textual descriptions. From the user perspective, the tool comprises a textual editor for assembling the descriptions and a visual editor for reviewing and post-processing the generated splitting suggestions. We preliminarily evaluate the tool in a case study involving a real-life model.

As MDE is increasingly applied to larger and more complex systems, the models that MDE platforms need to manage can grow significantly in size. Additionally, model management programs that interact with such models become larger and more complicated, which introduces further challenges in ensuring their correctness and maintainability. This paper presents an automated static analysis and validation framework for languages of the Epsilon platform. By performing static analysis on model management programs written in the Epsilon languages, this framework aims to improve program correctness and development efficiency in MDE development processes. In addition, by applying analysis on model management programs, sub-optimal performance patterns can be detected early in the development process and feedback can be provided to the developers to enable efficient management of large models.
