An appropriate combination of object-oriented programming concepts allows not only the development of single reusable components but also of semifinished architectures (=frameworks). The paper first discusses the concepts underlying frameworks and goes on to present design heuristics for developing such component architectures: Though design patterns are currently heralded as state-of-the-art in supporting framework development, a link between design patterns that capture and communicate proven object-oriented design and the framework development process is still missing. As pragmatic solution to this problem we introduce socalled hot spot cards to bridge the mentioned gap. These hot spot cards proved to be a valuable communication vehicle between domain experts and software engineers and thus helped to reduce the number of framework design iterations. An outlook sketches the perspectives and implications of framework technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

This paper presents a simple language together with a small run-time environment that enable communication with and adaptation of objects, each of which can be a prototype for other objects. We call the experimental system Chameleon. Like a chameleon, which can adapt the color of its skin to the color of its environment, the system provides means to easily and quickly adapt a program consisting of such objects to changing requirements. Chameleon uses a uniform communication protocol for structure modification and object interaction. The protocol is based on the notion of basic activities a software engineer carries out during program development. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

This paper describes the design and implementation of a concurrent programming environment which is based on the object-oriented language C++, supporting the powerful Actor computational model. The abstract data types, object manipulation through invoking methods, and polymorphism are the major object-oriented programming concepts that have been used extensively in the implementation of the Actor model. A kernel provides time sliced concurrency features for the environment together with the execution control and communication facilities.

In this paper we introduce an approach to performance assessment of concurrent logic/object-oriented programming for robot control applications implemented on a multi-transputer. After summarizing relevant aspects of logic/object-oriented robot programming we introduce the notion of run-time assessment. We analyze the dependency between communication cost and message length, transfer mode (synchronous, asynchronous), and allocation of the elements of the application program (methods and objects). Also the class structure affects the execution time.

In this paper, we introduce an approach to combine the notion of object-orientation with logic programming. It exploits the merits of concurrent and distributed programming, especially deploying the emerging transputer technology. We show that object-orientation can be easily adopted in logic programming. Further, we illustrate that the concepts of object-orientation can be extended to yield concurrency and distributedness. For this purpose, we specify relevant operation modes by means of Milner's CCS (Concurrent Communication Systems) and an object-oriented extension of Prolog, called PROLoop (as the acronym of `Prolog-based language for object-oriented programming) which we experimentally implemented. It is shown that these formalisms are appropriate for a precise specification and implementation of robot tasks. The declarative character of Prolog enables a powerful method to implement knowledge-based control and also procedural tasks. Moreover, the Prolog inference mechanism enables And-parallelism and OR-parallelism. Adopting object-orientation supports the materialization of distributed programming in Prolog. We demonstrate the feasibility of our approach by means of typical multi-robot controlling. To do this, multi-robot tasks are implemented in our experimental environment.

Main product costs are determined in the designing process. So a lot of methods are offered to predict cost and inform the engineer about the consequences of the decisions. Most of the methods are limited to the last phase of the design process and consider only manufacturing costs. We have developed an approach, which focus on early stages in design and consider indirect cost (including overhead, recycling, for example). This method combines a product model and a resource model, which are both based on STEP structures. In the first step of the design process the engineer fixes the main attributes of the new product. The system checks all products in the knowledge database for objects like form-features and components with similar attributes. These objects are matched to those used for the new product to predict activities and the resulting costs. The system gives cost information for the product life-cycle differentiated by processes, objects and cost elements. The prototype is installed on a workstation and connects a CAD-System with an expert system shell.

We distinguish the concepts of types, used for structure and behavioral sharing in object-oriented programming languages, from classes, used as collections in databases. Consequently, our class is not a type. Types are used strictly for structure;a type can be used as the structure for multiple, semantically unrelated, classes. objects belonging to these classes are said to have the same canonicalstracture. Classes are collections of objects enhanced with additional features to describe context sensitive information, thus supporting non-canonical view of objects in the class. With the above two classifications of objects, an object may be a member of several classes that are unrelated by the subclass superclass relationships;each class membership models the different roles played by an object in the teal world. This paper describes the above two concepts and shows how they are supported in our database programming language, PINOL. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1991.

Most query languages offer a set of powerful operators but unfortunately, this set is not extensible. In this paper, we describe the functional query language LIFOO that we designed for the object oriented database system O2. LIFOO allows users to define functional operators. We discuss this mechanism and detail compilation process of LIFOO expressions into CO2, the O2 programming language which is an extension of C. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1991.
