For the effective and early diagnosis of brain diseases, we have developed an evaluation system for brain function using an Independent Component Analysis (ICA) method, This evaluation system benefits greatly from the newly emerged grid. To embody a grid environment, a Globus grid toolkit has been utilized as a building block. In this research we have distributed the computational workload for the ICA on a Globus based grid environment composed of two Alpha cluster systems and a personal computer. In addition, in order to allow scientists and application developers to easily build the grid-enabled system, we also have adopted a grid-enabled-Message Passing Interface, called MPICH-G. An introduction of MPICH-G to the medical analysis system on a grid environment makes it possible for a naive user to realize rapid analysis without special knowledge of the grid. Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a highly sophisticated medical technology, is used for the measurement of brain function. The proposed method has the ability to integrate various geographically distributed resources and to analyze functional brain data from MEG using parallel computing. We have integrated computational resources on a grid environment and succeeded in reducing the analysis time of ICA. Furthermore, this research has successfully revealed the features of brain diseases. The results show not only that our system is useful for the evaluation of brain function, but also that a grid-enabled medical system is applicable to other medical problems. Although in this research our system has been developed on the LAN, our system is being realized on the WAN at Osaka University in Japan, the Nara Institute of Science and Technology in Japan, Nanyang Technology University in Singapore and the Institute of High Performance computing in Singapore.

We describe design and implementation of virtual private grid (VPG), a shell that can utilize many machines distributed over multiple subnets. VPG works around common security policies (e.g., firewall, private IP, DHCP) that restrict communication between machines and even break uniqueness of IP addresses. VPG provides the following functions: (1) a unique nickname to each machine that does not depend on a DNS name or a fixed IP address;(2)job submissions to any nicknamed machine;(3) redirections from/to a file on any nicknamed machine;(4) pipes between commands executed on any nicknamed machine. VPG implements the above functions by constructing a self-stabilizing spanning tree among machines and forwarding messages via a path in the tree. We ran VPG on about 100 nodes (270 CPUs) and measured a turn around time of a small job submission with VPG and other tools: rsh, SSH, and globus-job-run. The experimental result shows that VPG can submit a job faster than SSH and globus-job-run, since VPG performs authentication only when it constructs a tree. (C) 2003 Elsevier Science B.V. In this work we present the Internet Backplane Protocol (IBP), a middleware created to allow the sharing of storage resources, implemented as part of the network fabric. IBP allows an application to control intermediate data staging operations explicitly. As IBP follows a very simple philosophy, very similar to the Internet Protocol, and the resulting semantic might be too weak for some applications, we introduce the exNode, a data structure that aggregates storage allocations on the Internet. We present Neptune - the resource director of Océano, a policy driven fabric management system that dynamically reconfigures resources in a computing utility cluster. Neptune implements an on-line control mechanism subject to policy-based performance and resource configuration objectives. Neptune reassigns servers and bandwidth among a set of service domains, based on pre-defined policy, in response to workload changes. It builds and executes a reconfiguration plan through a planning framework, breaking reconfiguration objectives into individual tasks delegated to set of lower level resource managers. We describe an example decision policy algorithm that we implemented and demonstrated in an 80 server multi-domain computing utility. © 2002 ieee.

With increases in the amount of data available for analysis in commercial settings, On Line Analytical Processing (OLAP) and decision support have become important applications for high performance computing. Implementing such applications on clusters requires a lot of expertise and effort, particularly because of the sizes of input and output datasets. In this paper we describe our experiences in developing one such application using a cluster middleware, called ADR. We focus on the problem of data cube construction, which commonly arises in multi-dimensional OLAP. We show how ADR, originally developed for scientific data intensive applications, can be used for carrying out an efficient and scalable data cube construction implementation. A particular issue with the use of ADR is tiling of output datasets. We present new algorithms that combine inter-processor communication and tiling within each processor These algorithms preserve the important properties that are desirable front any parallel data cube construction algorithm. We have carried out a detailed evaluation of our implementation. The main results from our experiments are as follows: 1) High speedups are achieved on both dense and sparse datasets, even though we have used simple algorithms that sequentialize a part of the computation, 2) The execution time depends only upon the amount of computation, and does not increase in a super-linear fashion as the dataset size or the number of tiles increases, and 3) As the datasets become more sparse, sequential performance degrades, but the parallel speedups are still quite good.

In this paper we present the design and implementation of RVision (Remote Vision), an open architecture, high configurable tool for cluster monitoring. We focus on the description of it's modular architecture, emphasizing the new concepts we are introducing for cluster monitoring, such as monitoring sessions and the support for dynamic linking of monitoring libraries. In addition, we measure intrusion with several benchmarks and applications under different scenarios. RVision distinguishes itself from other available tools for cluster monitoring because of its open architecture, high configurability, and low intrusion. It is being used in production mode, in our research center, and has proven itself as a powerful alternative for cluster monitoring, especially in heterogeneous clusters and cluster of clusters. © 2002 ieee.

Fault tolerance is one of the key issues for large scale applications executed on high performance computing systems. In a cluster federation, clusters are gathered to provide huge computing power. To work efficiently on such systems, networks characteristics have to be taken into account: the latency between two nodes of different clusters is much higher than the latency between two nodes of the same cluster. In this paper, we present O2P-CF a message logging protocol well-suited to provide fault tolerance for message passing applications executed on cluster federations. O2P-CF is based on the combination of O2P, an extremely optimistic message logging protocol, with a pessimistic message logging protocol.

This paper presents a performance analysis of market-based batch schedulers for clusters of workstations. In contrast to previous work, we use user-centric performance metrics as the basis for system evaluation. Each user is modeled as having a utility function for each job which measures value delivered to the user as function of execution time. Summing over all utility functions in the workload, we use aggregate utility as a measure of overall value delivered to users. With aggregate utility as the performance metric, simulations are used to quantify the performance of both market-based and traditional batch scheduling algorithms under a variety of synthetic work-loads. Results show that an auction-based batch scheduling algorithm improves performance by a factor of up to 2-5x for sequential workloads and up to 14x for highly parallel workloads compared to traditional scheduling algorithms. © 2002 ieee.

We propose a novel scheme that uses Trusted computing technology to secure grid workflows. This scheme allows the selection of trustworthy resource providers based on their platform states. The integrity and confidentiality of workflow jobs are provided using cryptographic keys that can only be accessed when resource provider platforms are in trustworthy states. In addition, platform attestation is used to detect potential workflow execution problems,and the information collected can be used for process provenance.
