BPEL is the de-facto standard for business process modeling in today's enterprises and is a promising candidate for the integration of business andgrid applications. While BPEL works well for traditional web services, it has a number of drawbacks with respect to the more complex world of WSRF-based gridcomputing, especially where security is concerned. In this paper, a solution that extends the BPEL security approach to encompass secure grid application interactions is presented. The proposed approach is capable of handling both web service andgrid service resources and their corresponding security mechanisms. The BPEL language is extended by security-related settings. An implementation of a GSI-compliant BPEL engine that can also manage the lifetime of proxy certificates is presented.

D-grid is a German implementation of a grid, granted by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. In this paper we present the Core D-grid which acts as a condensation nucleus to build a production grid infrastructure. The main difference compared to other internationalgrid initiatives is the support of three middleware systems, namely LCG/gLite, Globus, and UNICORE for compute resources. Storage resources are connected via SRM/dCache and OGSA-DAI. In contrast to homogeneous communities, the partners in Core D-grid have different missions and backgrounds (computing centers, universities, research centers), providing heterogeneous hardware from single processors to high performance supercomputing systems with different operating systems. We present methods to integrate these resources and services for the D-grid infrastructure like a point of information, centralized user and virtual organization management, resource registration, software provisioning, and policies for the implementation (firewalls, certificates, user mapping).

This paper presents the design, implementation and evaluation of COMP Superscalar, a new and componentised version of the grid superscalar framework that enables the easy development of grid-unaware applications. By means of a simple programming model, COMP Superscalar keeps the grid as transparent as possible to the programmer. Moreover, the performance of the applications is optimized by exploiting their inherent concurrency when executing them on the grid. The runtime of COMP Superscalar has been designed to follow the grid Component Model (GCM) and is therefore formed by several components, each one encapsulating a given functionality identified in grid superscalar.

The path to HPC-Big Data convergence has resulted in numerous researches that demonstrate the performance trade-off between running applications on supercomputers and cloud platforms. Previous studies typically focus either on scientific HPC benchmarks or previous cloud configurations, failing to consider all the new opportunities offered by current cloud offerings. We present a comparative study of the performance of representative big data benchmarks, or "Big Data Ogres", and HPC benchmarks running on supercomputer and cloud. Our work distinguishes itself from previous studies in a way that we explore the latest generation of compute-optimized Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud instances, C4 for our experimentation on cloud. Our results reveal that Amazon C4 instances with increased compute performance and low variability in results make EC2-based cluster feasible for scientific computing and its applications in simulations, modeling and analysis.

Institutional grids consist of the aggregation of clusters belonging to different administrative domains to build a single parallel machine. To run an MPI application over an institutional grid, one has to address many challenges. One of the first problems to solve is the connectivity of the different nodes not belonging to the same administrative domain. Techniques based on communication relays, dynamic port opening, among others. have been proposed. In this work, we propose a set of grid or Web Services to abstract this connectivity service, and we evaluate the performances of this new level of communication for establishing the connectivity of an MPI application over an experimental grid.

In the current approaches to workflow scheduling, there is no cooperation between the distributed workflow brokers and as a result, the problem of conflicting schedules occur. To overcome this problem, in this paper, we propose a decentralized and cooperative workflow scheduling algorithm. The proposed approach utilizes a Peer-to-Peer (P2P) coordination space with respect to coordinating the application schedules among the grid wide distributed workflow brokers. The proposed algorithm is completely decentralized in the sense that there is no central point of contact in the system, the responsibility of the key functionalities such as resource discovery and scheduling coordination are delegated to the P2P coordination space. With the implementation of our approach, not only the performance bottlenecks are likely to be eliminated but also efficient scheduling with enhanced scalability and better autonomy for the users are likely to be achieved. We prove the feasibility of our approach through an extensive trace driven simulation study.

As the adoption of grid technology moves from science to industry, new requirements arise. In todays grid middlewares, the notion of paying for a job is a secondary requirement. In addition, the concept of selling computational power on a market is not established. On the other hand, the lack of billing capabilities hinders the commercial adoption. In this paper, we present our resource allocation protocol that suits the needs of commercial solution providers. We have developed an auction-based resource broker which uses a distributed agent infrastructure to communicate the user's requirements to resource providers and monetary prices back. The protocol has been formally verified and guarantees certain properties - for example, we can guarantee that the right stakeholder is billed for a job.

Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) clouds are considered interesting sources of computing and storage resources for scientific applications. However, given the large number of cloud vendors and their diverse offerings, it is not trivial for research projects to select an appropriate service provider. In this paper, we present the results of evaluation of public cloud providers, taking into account the requirements of the biomedical applications within the VPH-Share project. We performed a broad analysis of nearly 50 cloud providers and analyzed the performance and cost of 26 virtual machine instance types offered by the top three providers who meet our criteria: Amazon EC2, RackSpace and SoftLayer. We hope our results will be helpful for other research projects that are considering clouds as a potential source of computing and storage resources.

grids are distributed systems aiming at the aggregation of geographically distributed resources for high performance computing. Heterogeneity and volatility are the main characteristics of resources in a grid environment. This aspect makes the resource discovery in a grid a crucial problem: Given the resource requirements of an application, a resource discovery mechanism returns the set of resources matched by the description. By considering a grid as a peer-to-peer network, it is possible to use decentralized algorithms to locate resources. We propose in this paper a new mechanism for peer-to-peer resource discovery in a grid environment. Our system is based on push-pull strategy, Le, each peer may ask for resources or advertise them if they are available. Also, each peer maintains a local cache of messages and uses this information for routing. We compare our proposal with other search methods through simulation and we show that it provides higher success rate with lower overhead.

gridcomputing continues to hold promise for the high-availability of a wide range of computational systems and techniques. It is suggested that grids will attain greater acceptance by a larger audience of commercial end-users if binding Service Level Agreements (SLAs) are provided. We discuss grid commoditization, the use of grid technologies for financial risk analysis, and the potential formulation of the grid Economy. Our aim is to predict availability and capability for risk analysis in and of grids. The considerations involved may be more widely applicable to the configuration and management of related architectures including those of P2P systems and Clouds. In this paper, we explore and evaluate some of the factors involved in the automatic construction of SLAs for the grid Economy.
