Communication nodes with the ability to harvest energy from the environment have the potential to operate beyond the timeframe limited by the finite capacity of their batteries; and accordingly, to extend the overall network lifetime. However, the optimization of the communication system in the presence of energy harvesting devices requires a new paradigm in terms of power allocation since the energy becomes available over time. In this paper, we consider the problem of two-hop relaying in the presence of energy harvesting nodes. We identify the optimal offline transmission scheme for energy harvesting source and relay when the relay operates in the full-duplex mode. In the case of a half-duplex relay, we provide the optimal transmission scheme when the source has a single energy packet.

In this paper we consider passive sensor imaging with ambient noise sources by suitably migrating the cross correlations of the recorded signals. We use an imaging functional that relates to the classic Kirchhoff migration functional. We analyze the properties of the imaging functional in the high-frequency regime which shows that it produces sharp images. We identify the scaling assumptions that allow us to image respectively, the support of the random sources and the medium variations when these may come in the form of clutter. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical predictions.

A hybrid signal processing scheme is proposed for distributed multi-target tracking (MTT). For the sake of resource efficiency in a wireless sensor network (WSN), we reduce the problem to parallel cluster-based single target tracking when the targets are far apart, and switch to MTT only when data association becomes ambiguous. A sequential monte carlo method is employed to assign the ambiguous observations to specific targets or clutter, based on association probabilities. Whereas the rest observations are incorporated by the variational filter, which approximates the distribution of involved particles by a simple Gaussian distribution for each target. The natural andadaptive message compression dramatically reduces the resource consumption of the WSN. The low computation complexity also guarantees the one-line execution of the hybrid MTT scheme. In addition, experimental results prove that the proposed scheme succeeds in distinguishing and tracking multiple targets even during the occlusions.

Distributed space-time coding (DSTC) is a cooperative scheme proposed for wireless relay networks that achieves full diversity when the transmit power is infinitely high. In this paper, we propose to employ maximum-ratio combining (MRC) at the multiple-antenna relay to improve the performance of DSTC. Simulations and analysis show that the new scheme achieves a much better performance in relay networks than DSTC. In some network scenarios, it can even improve the scaling of the error rate with the transmit power. Furthermore, the new scheme requires a shorter training interval than DSTC.

We propose a Bayesian tracking algorithm based on adaptive fragmentation and variational approximation. By using the cue of gradient, we fragment the target into disconnected rectangles and reduce the confusion from the background. To handle the uncertainties in real tracking case, we choose the Bayesian framework with a variational implementation. The parameters of the variational inference are updated according to the observation and to the weights of the voting candidates. Experimental results show that our tracker outperforms directive searching and particle filtering. Furthermore, due to the simplicity of calculation, the proposed method can be applied to real-time surveillance systems.

Distributed space-time coding achieves full diversity in wireless relay networks without channel information at the relays. This paper is on the design of specific distributed space-time codes. By Cayley transform, the design of unitary matrices is transformed to that of Hermitian matrices. Gradient-descent method is used in the optimization to find codes that are "close" to orthogonal designs, which is known to be optimal in both coding gain and diversity. The proposed code design method can be used for networks with any relays and transmission rate. The optimized codes are adaptive to the information symbol constellation. Simulation shows that the designed codes achieve full diversity, and outperform the random code and other existing distributed space-time codes.
