It is shown that partial a priori information about the Airborne/Spacebased clutter covariance matrix (CCM) can be used effectively to enhance significantly the convergence performance of a block-processed Space/Time Adaptive Processor (STAP) in a clutter and jamming environment. The partial knowledge of the CCM is based upon the simplified General Clutter Model (GCM) which has been developed by the Airborne Radar community. A priori knowledge of parameters which should be readily measurable (but not necessarily accurate) by the radar platform associated with this model is assumed. The GCM generates an assumed CCM. The assumed CCM along with exact knowledge of the thermal noise covariance matrix is used to form a maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) of the unknown interference covariance matrix which is used by the STAR The new algorithm that employs the a priori clutter and thermal noise covariance information is evaluated using two clutter models: 1) a mismatched GCM and 2) the high-fidelity Research Laboratory Space Time Adaptive processing (RLSTAP) clutter model. For both clutter models, the new algorithm performed significantly better than the Sample Matrix Inversion (SMI) and Fast Maximum Likelihood (FML) STAP algorithms, the latter of which uses only information about the thermal noise covariance matrix.

Secondary Surveillance Radar (SSR) based on multilateration principle and omni-directional antennae are operational today [1, 2]. We proposed new algorithms to separate a mixture of overlapping SSR replies on a M-elements antenna in previous works [3, 4], other solutions were also proposed in the literature [5, 6, 7]. Unfortunately, all have either some shortcomings, or an expensive computational cost, or no simple practical implementation. Therefore, there is a need for reliable, simple, effective algorithms to separate multiple SSR signals. Real recorded signals in a live environment are used to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.

A novel class of complex valued kernel least mean square (CKLMS) algorithms is introduced with the aim to provide physical meaning to the mapping between the primal and dual space termed the independent CKLMS (iCKLMS). The general class of CKLMS algorithms is also extended in the widely linear sense to develop online kernel algorithms suitable for the processing of general complex valued signals, both circular and noncircular. The so-introduced augmented complex kernel least mean square (ACKLMS) algorithms are verified on adaptive prediction of nonlinear and nonstationary complex wind signals.

We propose a new class of nested vector-sensor arrays, via tensor modeling, which is capable of increasing the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, compared with the uniform linear array (ULA). By using one component's information of the interspectral tensor, the proposed nested vector-sensor array can provide O(N-2) DOFs with only N physical sensors. To utilize the increased DOFs, a novel spatial smoothing approach is proposed, which preserves the data structure and avoids reorganization via tensor modeling. Further, we propose corresponding direction of arrival (DOA) estimation strategies. Based on the analytical results, we consider two main applications: electromagnetic (EM) vector sensors and acoustic vector sensors. We show that the DOA estimation performance is greatly improved due to the combination of the nested-array strategy and tensor modeling. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified through numerical examples.

Spatial filtering is the fundamental characteristic of microphone array based signal acquisition, which plays an important role in applications such as speech enhancement and distant speech recognition. In the array processing literature, this property is formulated upon beam-pattern steering and it is characterized for narrowband signals. This paper proposes to characterize the microphone array broadband beam-pattern based on the average output of a steered beamformer for a broadband spectrum. Relying on this characterization, we derive the directivity beam-pattern of delay-and-sum and superdirective beamformers for a linear as well as a circular microphone array. We further investigate how the broadband beam-pattern is linked to speech recognition feature extraction;hence, it can be used to evaluate distant speech recognition performance. The proposed theory is demonstrated with experiments on real data recordings.

The optimal array for detecting the signal from a desired direction but contaminated by receiver noise and strong interference from different sources with unknown arriving-angles is re-examined. The well-known optimal array is obtained by inverting the covariance matrix of interference and noise to maximize the signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR). In practice, the covariance matrix is unknown and has to be estimated by a sample covariance matrix. The optimal array is thus estimated by inverting the sample covariance matrix. This procedure has been employed in optimal array research without challenge. However, it is shown in this paper that the estimated optimal array fails to yield the highest SINR in the case of unknown arriving-angles. Instead the highest SINR can be achieved by optimally estimating the arriving-angles of interference followed by a constrained matched filter, which maximizes the signal to noise ratio subject to canceling the interference from the estimated arriving-angles. In order to reduce the computational burden, an angle-tracking system for multiple targets is adopted to achieve the optimal estimation of arriving-angles. The resulting system of angle-tracking adaptive array offers the highest SINR at a computational burden only on the order of N . M-2 multiplications within a radar range-cell Delta tau, rather than N-3 multiplications in the well-known but questionable estimated optimal array. Here N is the number of sensors in the array and M the number of interference sources. Typically, N = 1,000 in a planar radar array, M = 2 similar to 10 and Delta tau = 1 mu S. Numerical simulations confirm the theoretical results.

Sound source localization systems typically measure differences in time-of-arrival between microphones in free field arrays. Using a different concept, we previously designed and built a localization system that mimics nature's solution of harnessing wave diffraction about the head while relying only on two sensors positioned antipodally. Departing from the biological constraint of two sensors, I recently showed that for broadband sources, a high acuity array could be designed with merely three microphones. Yet adding more microphones may further increase acuity and robustness. The localization algorithm we have developed uses pair-wise comparisons between microphones, the number of which increases quadratically with the number of microphones, N. In order to minimize calculations in time sensitive applications, choosing a subset of pairs may be important. I examine this issue here through simulations of a hexagonal array. Thanks to the redundancy of spatial information contained in multiple microphone measurements, algorithms that are linear in N allow high acuity localization of broadband sources.

Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) imaging technology has continued to evolve over the last few decades and the future holds promise. Beam raster scanning for 2D flyover SAR is yet another milestone in the evolutionary path of SAR imaging. This SAR imaging technique may have application in areas like passive unmanned aerial vehicle SAR. This paper builds on the 2D aperture synthesis concepts based upon rigorous analytical results presented by the authors earlier and elucidates the characteristics of sombrero point spread function and reconstruction in comparison to sine point spread function and reconstruction. This paper also explains the concept of 2D target area data collection scheme called flyover beam raster scanning.

Each node or sensor in a network makes a local observation that is linearly related to a set of public and private parameters. The nodes send their observations to a fusion center to allow it to estimate a set of public parameters. However, the fusion center may also abuse this information to estimate other private parameters. To prevent leakage of the private parameters, each node first sanitizes its local observation using a local privacy mechanism before transmitting it to the fusion center. We consider the maximum privacy achievable under perfect utility in terms of the Cramer-Rao lower bounds. We propose a method to maximize the estimation error for inferring the private parameters while ensuring the estimation error for inferring the public parameters remains unchanged after sanitizing the sensors' measurements.

Voice based computing applications, such as phone communication and speech recognition, use microphone arrays to capture voice from a human speaker. In many environments of interest, however, sounds from other sources interfere with the speaker's voice, posing severe problems for subsequent processing. This paper describes a new framework for treating this problem, and presents and demonstrates a new algorithm for the cancellation of interfering sounds. Our framework combines techniques from statistical machine learning with ideas from speech and audio processing. An important feature involves training rich probabilistic models on data from different types of relevant sound sources. nose source models are then incorporated into a larger probabilistic model of the observed microphone data. Using that model we derive our algorithm, which is of the expectation-maximization type and infers from data the clean sound of separate individual sources. We report very good results on data recorded in different environments.
