In distributed sensor networks, the posterior Cramer-Rao lower bound (PCRLB) has recently been used [1] as a selection criteria for sensor management decisions, where new sensor nodes are deployed or existing ones reactivated to optimize the network's performance. Previous algorithms to compute the PCRLB are derived for the centralized [2] and hierarchical architectures [3] using a fusion centre that makes them inappropriate for distributed sensor management. Only recently a suboptimal expression [1] for the distributed architecture has been proposed, which can at times lead to large errors especially in systems with highly non-linear dynamics. The paper derives the optimal PCRLB for the distributed architecture. In other words, we derive a recursive procedure to determine the overall Fisher information matrix (FIM), i.e., the inverse of the PCRLB, from local FIMs of the distributed estimators. The proposed distributed PCRLB is independent of the filtering mechanism used and closely follows its centralized counterpart.

A method is presented of performing geolocation of fixed emitters from a single, airborne platform using a two-element, very long baseline interferometer (VLBI) from 10 to 100 feet in length. The interferometer baseline is precisely tracked through a differential GPS system using auxiliary antennas placed in close proximity to the VLBI pair. A lever arm correction is applied to arrive at the VLBI baseline from the GPS measurements. A batch least squares processing algorithm is presented that operates on the interferometric phase measurements directly and resolves the associated ambiguities through global search strategies. A method of eliminating receiver phase bias by performing a difference operation is shown. Simulation results and Cramer-Rao lower bounds are also presented.

Position solutions provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be completely misled by structural interference or spoofing threats. An approach utilizing an antenna array is proposed in order to suppress spoofing attacks. The proposed method is based on the assumption that all spoofing signals are transmitted from a single point source. A spatial domain processing technique is proposed to extract the spoofing signal steering vector and consequently to discard the spoofing signals. This method is implemented before despreading and acquisition stage of a GNSS receiver. Hence, it does not impose a heavy computational load on the receiver operational process since it does not require any extensive search in the code and Doppler domains to separately despread individual authentic and spoofing signals. Moreover, the proposed method does not require any antenna array calibration process. This pre-despreading interference mitigation technique is further extended to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each individual authentic GNSS signal. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively countermeasures spoofing attacks for a wide range of received spoofing power.

A solution to the problem of intraference is obtained by recognising that the current diagonalisation schemes for the complex symmetric pseudocovariance matrix are not adequate to preserve its intrinsic complex-valued nature. To this end, we propose the correlation preserving transform (CPT), which both maintains the degree of the intrinsic correlation within a recovered bivariate source (minimum intraference) and minimises the correlation between different bivariate sources (minimum interference). Unlike the existing literature, this work therefore considers both the correlation structure between the data channels within bivariate sources and inter-source correlation. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated through analysis and simulations.

Linear transmission of state measurements is studied, where the control center (CC) sends random state measurement requests to multiple sensors. Each sensor is capable of measuring multiple system parameters, and the CC asks for a particular system parameter from each sensor at each time slot. Delay constrained linear transmission of these measurements over orthogonal fading channels is considered. The total meansquare error (MSE) distortion is studied for Gaussian states and channels under an average power constraint. For a particular symmetric scenario, a round-robin scheduling algorithm and optimal linear transmission (LT) scheme are presented. It is shown that, as opposed to the case of a single parameter measurement, the performance of the proposed LT strategy improves as the delay constraint is relaxed, and achieves the Shannon lower bound under certain matching conditions between the source and the channel statistics. © 2014 ieee.

PARAFAC2 is a powerful method for analyzing multi-modal data consisting of irregular frontal slices. In this work, we propose POPLAR method that imposes graph Laplacians constraints induced by the similarity symmetric tensor as auxiliary information to force decomposition factors to behave similarly and the method is developed using AO-ADMM for 3-way PARAFAC2 tensor decomposition. To the best of our knowledge, POPLAR is the first approach to incorporate graph Laplacians constraints using auxiliary information. We extensively evaluate POPLAR's performance in comparison to state-of-the-art approaches across synthetic and real dataset, and POPLAR clearly exhibits better performance with respect to the Fitness (better 3-8%), and F1 score (better 5-20%) among the state-of-the-art factorization method. Furthermore, the running time for the method is comparable to the state-of-art method.

In radio astronomy images are made of astronomical objects as they appear at radio frequencies using a technique called aperture synthesis. Signats from several antennas are correlated and integrated over time. The data collected over several hours are further processed to calibrate the instrument and to form an image or intensity map. The calibration and imaging algorithms do not use the autocorrelations because the receiver noise is unstable and hence considered unknown. In literature the Cramer Rao Bound for the calibration problem has been derived assuming that the autocorrelations are part of the available data. If the assumption is correct that the autocorrelations do not contain useful information when the receiver noise is unknown, than the CRB for the case that the autocorrelations are not part of the data will be the same. In this paper we will derive the CRB excluding the autocorrelations and show that it indeed does not matter whether the autocorrelations are included or not.

We present a novel sensing paradigm of measuring human gait. The goal of the research is to achieve low-cost gait biometrics systems with minimum data throughput for various sensing modalities. The binary measurements of the system are achieved by using both (1) periodic and (2) pseudo-random sampling structures. As a result, either static or dynamic gait features can be estimated from a one-bit data stream. The simulation results demonstrate the gait information acquisition capability of the proposed binary sensing technology.

This paper presents an efficient Semi-Blind (SB) approach for demixing multi-user mixtures, in a Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MIMO-OFDM) communications system. A weighted hybrid cost function is introduced based upon the Multi-Modulus (MM) criterion, applied to unknown data, and the Least Squares (LS) criterion for pilot symbols. A separation procedure is put forward based on a block gradient descent approach, in which the step size is algebraically computed at each iteration and for each user. Besides a reduced computational complexity and an accelerated convergence, simulation results show that the proposed approach allows to mitigate the inherent ambiguity of fully-blind methods, and to withstand to the pilot contamination problem in massive MIMO systems.

A novel method is devised to jointly estimate the channel matrices involved in a relay-assisted MIMO communication system. We first propose a trilinear coding structure to be used at the amplify-and-forward (AF) relays for combining the received signals while spreading the combined signals across transmit antennas and time blocks, before retransmission. This structure provides antenna selection at the relays and different amplification schemes with non-diagonal amplification matrices. Then, by exploiting the tensor structure of the end-to-end MIMO links, the channel matrices are iteratively estimated by means of a combined alternating least squares (Comb-ALS-MIMO) algorithm that couples PARAFAC and Tucker2 decompositions for the received signals. The proposed method provides an effective solution to the channel estimation problem due to the efficient use of cooperative diversity and tensor-based signal processing.
