Being able to determine the rank of a symmetric tensor and estimate the number of sources within single channel mixtures are the motives for developing a new approach for decomposition of single channel mixtures. The single channel data is converted to a symmetric tensor and decomposed. As another contribution, the inherent frequency diversity of the time series has been effectively exploited to highlight the subspace of interest. As a useful application, the method has been applied to detect the beta rebound for use in brain computer interfacing.

A semi closed-form expression of the Fisher information matrix in the context of K-distributed observations with parameterized mean is given and related to the classical, i.e. Gaussian case. This connection is done via a simple multiplicative factor, which only depends on the intrinsic parameters of the texture and the size of the observation vector. Finally, numerical simulation is provided to corroborate the theoretical analysis.

We address the problem of distributed filtering in a wireless sensor network and develop distributed approximations of three variants of the ensemble Kalman filter. We express the update equations in an alternative information form in order to formulate a distributed measurement update mechanism. The distributed filters use randomized gossip to reach consensus on the statistics needed to perform an update. Simulation results suggest that in the case of linear measurements and high-dimensional nonlinear measurements (with measurement model parameters known network-wide) with nonlinear state dynamics the proposed schemes achieve accuracy comparable to state-of-the-art distributed filters while significantly reducing the communication overhead.

In this paper we focus on the energy detector for decision fusion in wireless sensor networks over multiple access channels. More specifically, we derive analytical performance in terms of global probability of false alarm and detection (including asymptotic performance for large number of sensors) when the fading is a Ricean mixture, i.e. channel coefficients are sampled from a Gaussian mixture (GM) distribution. The motivation for the GM is the ability to model real-world scenarios while keeping mathematical tractability. Analytical results are confirmed through numerical simulations.

A solution to the problem of intraference is obtained by recognising that the current diagonalisation schemes for the complex symmetric pseudocovariance matrix are not adequate to preserve its intrinsic complex-valued nature. To this end, we propose the correlation preserving transform (CPT), which both maintains the degree of the intrinsic correlation within a recovered bivariate source (minimum intraference) and minimises the correlation between different bivariate sources (minimum interference). Unlike the existing literature, this work therefore considers both the correlation structure between the data channels within bivariate sources and inter-source correlation. The efficacy of the proposed method is validated through analysis and simulations.

Position solutions provided by Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) can be completely misled by structural interference or spoofing threats. An approach utilizing an antenna array is proposed in order to suppress spoofing attacks. The proposed method is based on the assumption that all spoofing signals are transmitted from a single point source. A spatial domain processing technique is proposed to extract the spoofing signal steering vector and consequently to discard the spoofing signals. This method is implemented before despreading and acquisition stage of a GNSS receiver. Hence, it does not impose a heavy computational load on the receiver operational process since it does not require any extensive search in the code and Doppler domains to separately despread individual authentic and spoofing signals. Moreover, the proposed method does not require any antenna array calibration process. This pre-despreading interference mitigation technique is further extended to maximize signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of each individual authentic GNSS signal. Simulation results show that the proposed method effectively countermeasures spoofing attacks for a wide range of received spoofing power.

The 2-D angular resolution limit for array radar with ultrawideband (UWB) stochastic signals based on the statistical resolution theory is presented in this paper. The signal model of monostatic array radar with circular array configuration and UWB stochastic signals is established, while the resolution of two closely spaced targets is modelled as a binary hypothesis test. The statistical angular resolution limit (SARL) for array radar with UWB stochastic signals is derived based on the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) with given probabilities of false alarm and detection. The effects of detection parameters, transmit waveforms, array geometry, signal-to-noise ratio and parameters of target on SARL are analysed. Compared with the conventional resolution defined by ambiguity function, the SARL reflects the practical resolution ability of radar and can provide an optimization criterion for radar system design.

We propose a new class of nested vector-sensor arrays, via tensor modeling, which is capable of increasing the number of degrees of freedom (DOFs) for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation, compared with the uniform linear array (ULA). By using one component's information of the interspectral tensor, the proposed nested vector-sensor array can provide O(N-2) DOFs with only N physical sensors. To utilize the increased DOFs, a novel spatial smoothing approach is proposed, which preserves the data structure and avoids reorganization via tensor modeling. Further, we propose corresponding direction of arrival (DOA) estimation strategies. Based on the analytical results, we consider two main applications: electromagnetic (EM) vector sensors and acoustic vector sensors. We show that the DOA estimation performance is greatly improved due to the combination of the nested-array strategy and tensor modeling. The effectiveness of the proposed methods is verified through numerical examples.

A new insight into the relationship between the complex circularity quotient and the coefficient of a linear minimum mean square estimator (LMMSE) which estimates a complex random variable from its complex conjugate is established. An adaptive version of this estimator, suitable for real time tracking of the degree of complex circularity is proposed based on the complex least mean square (CLMS) algorithm. For Gaussian data, the mean and mean square analyses show the effect of data non-circularity on the stability bounds of the real time circularity tracker. The concept is verified over simulations on both synthetic single-and multi-channel data and on real world wind signals with varying degrees of circularity.

A novel method is devised to jointly estimate the channel matrices involved in a relay-assisted MIMO communication system. We first propose a trilinear coding structure to be used at the amplify-and-forward (AF) relays for combining the received signals while spreading the combined signals across transmit antennas and time blocks, before retransmission. This structure provides antenna selection at the relays and different amplification schemes with non-diagonal amplification matrices. Then, by exploiting the tensor structure of the end-to-end MIMO links, the channel matrices are iteratively estimated by means of a combined alternating least squares (Comb-ALS-MIMO) algorithm that couples PARAFAC and Tucker2 decompositions for the received signals. The proposed method provides an effective solution to the channel estimation problem due to the efficient use of cooperative diversity and tensor-based signal processing.
