This paper addresses the provision of personal soundfields (zones) to multiple listeners in a space for which there are several fixed, virtual sources. For such multizone systems, optimization of speaker positions and weightings is important to reduce the number of active speakers. In this paper a two stage pressure matching optimization is proposed for wideband sound sources (such as speech signals). In the first stage, the least-absolute shrinkage and selection operator (Lasso) is used to select the speakers' positions for all sources and frequencies. A second stage then optimizes reproduction using all selected speakers on the basis of regularized least-squares (LS) or Lasso algorithm. The performance of these new, two-stage approaches is investigated for different speaker numbers, frequency range and reproduction angles. Results show that a limited arc of speakers using a two-stage optimization can give up to 38dB improvement in zone normalized squared error over a single-stage LS optimization.

We propose a weighted KNN Epipolar Geometry-based method for vision-based indoor localization using cellphone cameras. The proposed method is applicable for fine localization whenever a pose-tagged (position + rotation matrix) image database is available rather than just Geo-tagged one. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first that Epipolar geometry has been utilized for fine localization in indoor applications using smartphone images. We compare the performance of our method with two outstanding literature works. It will be also demonstrated that the proposed method can extrapolate the location of queries located outside of the database location set, as well as compensate for the small databases, where database location set is sparse as two additional new features of this method.

This paper investigates optimal target-sensor geometries for differential received signal strength (DRSS) localization in the 2D-plane. To achieve this, theD-optimality criterion is employed, whichmaximizes the determinant of the Fisher information matrix (FIM). We observe that equiangular sensor separationmaximizes the determinant of the FIM, forming the best geometry, for equal target-sensor ranges under the assumption of identical log-normal noise variances for all sensor measurements. However, when the distances between the target and sensors are different, equiangular sensor separation cannot meet the optimal geometry condition. We provide analytical and numerical solutions for optimal geometries for the specific cases of three and four sensors with non-uniform target-sensor ranges.

This paper describes methods for broadening the beam of a phased array antenna using phase-only element weights. This type of broadening can be valuable for improving the search occupancy and/or reducing the search frame time for large phased arrays, when transmit beam broadening is combined with multiple simultaneous receive beams. Phase-only broadening is required for typical solid-state (active phased) arrays because control of the transmit amplitude at each element is not practical. A notable result is that there is a relationship between the amount of beam broadening and the efficiency (directivity) of the resulting beam. In particular it is shown that broadening less than similar to 2.5:1 results in reduced beam efficiency for both linear and circular arrays, while a broadening of greater than similar to 2.5:1 results in improved beam efficiency, and that, therefore, certain broadening configurations will be preferable to the radar designer (e.g. 4:1 in one plane rather than 2:1 in two planes, due to a large difference in efficiency). The algorithms used to achieve the broadening patterns presented here are based on a combination of homotopy from known optimality with a stochastic gradient descent approach using a carefully constructed one parameter family of penalty functions.

Direction of arrival estimation using the spherical microphone array usually requires a search in the whole 3-dimensional space, hence computationally demanding. This work presents a machine learning approach to sectorizing the 3-dimensional space, as an intermediate step for direction-of-arrival estimation using spherical microphone array. A new feature based on the outer product of spherical harmonic vectors was proposed for the classification. This spherical harmonic matrix nominally offers lower dimensionality compared to the commonly used covariance matrix of received data. The dimension of the input matrix was further reduced using the neighborhood component analysis. The extracted features were then used to train a support vector machine (SVM), 2-layer multilayer perceptron (MLP) and a convolutional neural network (CNN) for classification purposes. The results show that the models were able to classify the spherical sector with up to 90% accuracy for all models and number of sectors under consideration. Also, the MLP and CNN trained with simulated samples were able to accurately classify samples from real data that were not included in training samples.

In this paper, we address the problem of two-dimensional (2-D) direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation for parallel co-prime arrays. To alleviate the tremendous computation burden caused by spectral search and angle pairing, in this paper, we propose an efficient reduced dimensional least spectral search based estimation method with automatic pairing. Specifically, we first utilize the cross-covariance matrix to decouple the 2-D DOA estimation problem into a one-dimensional (1-D) one, and then design a least spectral search based 1-D DOA estimation method according to the relations between true and ambiguous angles. Finally, we estimate the remaining 1-D DOAs via least square criterion with automatic pairing. We evaluate the complexity and present the simulation results to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This work develops two fast echo signal retrieval algorithms for sonar, which are able to efficiently work in the presence of impulse noise. First, using spatial sparsity of sonar echo signal, an l(2,1)-norm optimization model with lasso form is formulated in impulse noise environment. Then, in order to recover original signal quickly, a direct gradient l(2,1)-norm algorithm is employed to solve the optimization problem, where the solution has closed form but two variables need to be initialized. Further, the original problem is transformed into a constrained minimization problem and then Lagrange multiplier method is used to find the solution. Experimental results show that the proposed two methods have similar mean square error (MSE) performance compared with traditional method using CVX optimization tool, however, computational complexities are greatly reduced.

Beyond traditional solid-state antenna, fluid antennas (FAs) exhibit unparalleled reconfigurability, drawing significant interest for applications in wireless communications and radar. This paper presents a design of FA array (FAA) MIMO radar for improved target detection in the presence of jammers, highlighting the advantages of FAA in sensing scenarios. By utilizing flexible positioning of FAAs, we introduce the antenna position vector (APV) as a design variable, in addition to waveforms, aiming to maximize the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio (SINR) with constraints to maintain waveform unimodularity and avoid FA coupling. The formulated nonconvex problem is tackled by an iterative algorithm based on the block majorization-minimization framework. Each iteration involves solving linearly constrained quadratic programming problems for APV optimization and updating the waveforms via a closed-form solution. Simulation results reveal that the designed APVs of the transmit and receiving FAAs can automatically balance angular resolution and ambiguity, which together with the optimized waveform, significantly enhances the SINR through enhanced jamming suppression. This improvement is attributed to increased flexibility across spatial and frequency dimensions facilitated by the FAAs.

Many multi-user receivers have been developed these last years to mitigate the effects of both multi-paths and interferences in CDMA radiocommunication networks. However;despite of these works, very few papers have been devoted to the implementation of these receivers and, more precisely to the channel estimation problem in both multi-user and FDD UMTS context. Assuming specular propagation channels and a multi-sensor receiver the purpose of this paper is to present a parametric technique for the joint estimation of the delays and angles of arrival of the propagation channels between each user and the array of sensor for the FDD UMTS uplink. The quality of the latter are then evaluated through mean square error (MSE) computations and bit error rates (BER) after demodulation at the output of two receivers (2D-RAKE and Decorrelator receiver) adapted to the FDD UMTS uplink.
