Monitoring harsh environments such as underwater scenarios or aircraft external surfaces pertains to important applications like assisted navigation and tactical surveillance;nevertheless, it poses additional challenges compared with standard applications. At Transducers2005 we presented a wired addressing architecture of distributed sensors for monitoring real-time in-situ pressure variations in underwater environment that faces the above-mentioned issues. This architecture consists in a double array of identical and interconnected smart nodes monitoring a matrix of passive sensors. I n this paper, we present an analysis of the delay model related to the presented architecture and a calculation of the overall frame-rate of the system as a function of the geometrical topology of the arrays. The topology of the network, i.e. the length of each bus and the number of nodes, can be chosen according to the application, and directly affects the global capacitive load on the serial lines. Each serial line can be schematized with a distributed RC model for the flat cable plus a lumped capacitance for each smart node. Then, a 3(rd)-order pi-segmented model of O'Brien-Savarino [4] is calculated for a 16-block fine with block length equal to 0.3m. Thanks to that, the global time per iteration is calculated on each bus as well as the scanning time of the whole matrix and the frame rate for the system as a function of sensor distribution and of the aspect ratio of the matrix. This model can be employed to identify the optimal arrangement for the sensor matrix and smart node arrays.

Digital cameras measure a color image by using color filters to interleave red, green, and blue samples across the charge coupled device (CCD) sensor. These samples must be interpolated to the resolution of the sensor to produce a full-color image. Adams and Hamilton proposed an interpolation method for the green image where for each missing sample, an estimate was computed by interpolating along a vertical or horizontal direction. In this method, red, green, and blue samples were used to estimate the green value. This paper provides an analysis of this method and simplifies the algorithm by removing the directional processing. The new method uses one interpolation filter for the green pixels and one interpolation filter for the red and blue pixels. Because the proposed method is a linear system, it will run efficiently on a DSP system. The quality of the output images from the proposed method is equivalent to the quality of the images from the Adams and Hamilton method.

In this paper, we consider a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast relay channel (BRC), in which the communication of a multi-antenna base station (BS) with several multi-antenna mobile stations (MS) is assisted by a fixed half-duplex multi-antenna relay station (RS). Applying dirty paper coding (DPC) at the BS and beamforming at the RS, we jointly optimize the transmit covariance matrices at the BS and the beamforming matrix at the RS by maximizing the system sum rate, which is a nonconvex problem. To solve this problem, we resort to the more tractable sum rate maximization in the dual multiple access relay channel (MARC), which is still a nonconvex difference of convex functions (DC) programming problem. We develop an iterative algorithm, termed alternating matrix polynomial time DC (POTDC) algorithm, based on an alternating optimization of the beamforming matrix and the transmit covariance matrices. The resulting covariance matrices for the MARC are then mapped to the desired BRC covariance matrices. The sum rate performance of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated by simulations.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a major auto-immune disease that is the leading cause of non-traumatic impairment of the central nervous system (CNS) in young adults. Successful treatment of MS patients depends on accurate tools for both the MS diagnosis and the disability progression. In current and upcoming studies the authors aim to explore the capabilities of applying a commercial electromyographic and inertial sensor (MYO Armband by Thalmic Labs Inc.), coupled with a multichannel signal processing tool, to standard neurological examination of MS progression. In this pilot study we formulate a two-class "healthy control" - "having MS" classification problem. A dataset of electromyographic signals and inertial sensor measurements from 71 individuals (31 MS patients and 40 healthy controls) was acquired during standard neurological examination routine. Temporal and spectral features of the signals were extracted in order to train and validate a classification model. Finally, a Support Vector Machine classifier was obtained giving AUROC = 0.94, 95% CI = [0.88, 0.99]. We propose a set of signal descriptors that correlate with objective components of the neurological examination. The proposed signal acquisition and processing technique, being easy to integrate into the traditional neurological exam, may have high potential for aiding in quantifying MS progression.

Space Time Adaptive processing. STAP) is a two-dimensional adaptive filtering technique which uses jointly temporal and spatial dimensions to suppress disturbance and to improve target detection. Disturbance contains both the clutter arriving from signal backscattering of the ground and the thermal noise resulting from the sensors noise. In practical cases, the STAP clutter can be considered to have a low rank structure. Using this assumption, a low rank vector STAP filter is derived based on the projector onto the clutter subspace. With new STAP applications like MIMO STAP or polarimetric STAP, the generalization of the classic filters to multidimensional configurations arises. A possible solution consists in keeping the multidimensional structure and in extending the classic filters with multilinear algebra. Using the low-rank structure of the clutter, we propose in this paper a new low-rank tensor STAP filter based on a generalization of the Higher Order Singular Value Decomposition. HOSVD) in order to use at the same time the simple. for example time, spatial, polarimetric, ...) and the combined information. for example spatio-temporal). Results are shown for two cases : classic 2D STAP and 3D polarimetric STAP. In the classic case, vector and tensor filters are equivalent. In the polarimetric case, we show the enhancement of the tensor filter.

Deterministic broadband time-varying pulses such as chirp signals are widely used in seismic applications to determine the layering structure of the earth. Various broadband matched field processors (MFP) which have been already developed for use in inversion [1,2] rely on only their frequency distribution so their performance fail in the presence of similar powerful broadband correlated noises. Because chirp and other deterministic time-varying signals have distinct signatures in time-frequency space, we have introduced a cross relation based MFP in time-frequency space that incorporates these signatures in the processing to counter the effect of broadband correlated noises in the received data. Additionally, white noise can be removed by using a Cross-cross relation (CCR) time-frequency (TF)-MFP that contains only cross components of the received signals in its structure. We demonstrate the advantages of this process over the conventional MFPs to date.

This paper describes a multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) generalization of space-time adaptive processing (STAP) to mitigate radar clutter subject to multipath propagation between transmit and receive arrays. Multipath clutter can occur when surface returns are multiply scattered, causing significant Doppler frequency and wavenumber spreads. In the worst case, multipath propagation may cause Doppler spread clutter to return via the receiver mainlobe. In such situations, conventional STAP cannot mitigate Doppler spread mainlobe clutter without also suppressing the target. MIMO radar techniques using orthogonal waveforms have been proposed for increasing radar coverage rate often at the expense of employing significantly larger radar time-bandwidth products. In this paper, we consider a MIMO approach wherein conventional radar waveforms are phase-coded to be orthogonal after Doppler processing at the receiver, i.e. in "slow-time." Slow-time MIMO has the advantages of being bandwidth efficient and easily implemented without the need to modify the receiver before range pulse-compression. In this paper, the mathematical formulation of MIMO STAP is developed for both direct-path and multipath clutter scenarios. At each slant range, the MIMO STAP processor operates on a receive sensor, transmitted pulses, and slow-time phase code channel data cube. Coherent combination of the decoded slow-time channels at the receiver permits effective control of the transmit array pattern by receive post-processing as a function of slant range. Simulation results demonstrate SNR gains when a transmit null is steered in the outbound direction towards the multiply scattered clutter.

We consider the problem of localizing a source by means of a uniform linear array of sensors when the received signal is corrupted by multiplicative noise. Since the exact Maximum Likelihood (ML) estimator is computationally intensive, two approximate solutions are proposed, originating from the analysis of the high and low signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) cases, respectively. First, starting with the no additive noise case, a very simple approximate ML (AML(1)) estimator is derived. A theoretical expression for its asymptotic variance in the presence of additive noise is derived. It shows that the AML1 estimator has a performance close to the Cramer-Rao bound (CRB) for moderate to high SNR. Next, the low SNR case is considered and the corresponding AML(2) solution is derived. It is shown that the approximate ML criterion can be concentrated with respect to (w.r.t.) both the multiplicative and additive noise powers, leaving out a 2-D minimization problem instead of a 4-D problem required by the exact ML. Numerical results illustrate the performance of the estimators and confirm the validity of the theoretical analysis.

In this paper, we present a way to track multiple maneuvering targets with varying time-frequency signatures. A particle filter is used to track targets that have constant speeds with changing heading directions. The target motion dynamics help the particle filter achieve an angular resolution otherwise not possible by the conventional beamforming techniques. Moreover, the particle filter has a built-in target association that eliminates the need for heuristic techniques commonly used in the multiple target tracking problems. Reference priors are used to derive the probability distribution function of the acoustic array outputs given the state of the multiple target states (MTS's). Local linearization is used to approximate the importance function used in the particle filter by a Gaussian pdf. Finally, computer simulations are used to demonstrate the performance of the algorithm with synthetic data.

We propose a technique for the autonomous detection of the faulty sensors of a sensor array that are aberrant relative to the rest. Our approach is based on probabilistically modeling the distribution of the differences between the sensor measurements as a mixture of gaussians and then classifying further instances of the sensor differences using a naive bayes classifier. We demonstrate the applicability of this technique to the diagnosis of the sensors/photosites of a CCD array, using sensor array data comprising of randomly selected images. Our technique performs well for different combinations of parameter settings at the detection of the faulty photosites of a CCD array.
