Close-in sensing is needed for urban warfare operations, where Ground Moving Target Indication (GMTI) could be provided via forward or rear-facing multi-function array radars mounted on small highly-maneuverable airborne platforms. However, airborne radar arrays oriented any direction other than side-looking cause an elevation dependent angle-Doppler relationship in the clutter returns. This non-stationarity is acute in close-in sensing geometries where elevation diversity exists over the scene of interest. However, planar arrays have an inherent advantage over linear arrays due to their ability to observe clutter statistics as a function of elevation. This paper demonstrates the utility of elevation diversity by synthesizing a single 3D-STAP filter that exhibits an elevation dependent azimuth-Doppler response which is tailored to null the clutter "bowl" which characterizes the forward-looking clutter spectrum. Such a capability is particularly exploitable on transmit, where all elevation angles are simultaneously illuminated. To demonstrate potential benefits, this paper proposes the use of recently developed Space Time Illumination Patterns (STIP) from a planar AESA to invoke elevation diverse space-time illumination in a forward-looking clutter scenario. It is shown that 3D-STIP (azimuth-elevation-Doppler) facilitates elevation specific space-time beamforming which removes the clutter energy from a given Doppler frequency across all ranges, potentially simplifying processing on receive. Simulations using synthesized training data and clairvoyant covariance knowledge are conducted to demonstrate proof-of-concept.

Traffic jam is considered as a difficult problem to deal with in many cities around the world due to the continuously increasing number of vehicles compared to the available infrastructure. Traffic congestion significantly influences drivers travel journey, fuel consumption and air pollution. However, the most important factor has affected the delay of emergency vehicles, such as ambulances and police cars, leading to increased road deaths and significant financial losses. To reduce this problem, we propose an advanced traffic control allows rapid emergency services response in smart cities. This can be achieved through a traffic management system capable of implementing path planning in road network monitoring and driving the emergency vehicle in the best possible way to reach the hazard zone. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared with two other algorithms over Birmingham city centre test scenarios. Simulation results show that the proposed approach improves traffic efficiency of emergency vehicles by an overall average of 21.78%, 29.32%, 32.79% and 46.77% in terms of travel time, fuel consumption, CO2 emission and average speed, respectively.

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS)-aided wireless relaying system has aroused great interest recently due to its potential to improve the relaying performance. However, most existing works only consider the decode-and-forward (DF) relay and ignore the base station (BS) to user direct link. In this paper, we focus on an IRS-aided full-duplex (FD) amplify-and-forward (AF) relay system and study the beamforming optimization problem. Specifically, we aim to maximize the transmission rate when deploying the IRS near the relay by jointly optimizing the IRS reflection coefficients and transmit powers at the BS and relay. Then, a virtual stochastic successive convex approximation (VSSCA) algorithm is developed to solve our formulated deterministic optimization problem efficiently. Finally, numerical results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed algorithm as compared to various benchmark schemes.

UNIFIED ANALYSIS FOR DOA ESTIMATION ALGORITHMS IN array signal-processing

In this paper, a unified statistical performance analysis using perturbation expansions is applied to subspace-based algorithms for direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in array signal processing. The analysis assumes that only a finite amount of array data is available at high signal-to-noise ratio. The MUSIC, Min-Norm, State-Space Realization (TAM) and ESPRIT algorithms are analyzed in a common framework. A significant feature of this analysis is that it includes different types of error sources, such as the finite sample effect induced by additive observation noise, the sensor error effect induced by the inaccurate knowledge of sensor response and location, and the effect of a coherent noise field with unknown structure. All of the algorithms considered in this paper are based on a singular value decomposition of a data matrix. A general expression for the perturbation of singular vectors as a function of data matrix perturbations is derived and used to obtain an analytical expression for the mean-squared DOA estimation error in a simple and self-contained fashion. The tractable formulas provide insight into the algorithms. Simulation results verify the analytically predicted performance.

The transport and energy measurement and billing of natural gas in pipeline systems is well understood in the gas industry. With decarbonization ambitions moving forward, the transport of CO2 is becoming increasingly important to facilitate carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS). There are many ongoing CCUS projects especially in northwestern part of Europe, e.g. Northern Lights (Norway), Porthos & Athos (Netherlands), Net Zero Teesside & Zero Carbon Humber (UK). Due to the complexity of the CO2 value chain, accurate measurements are required in a variety of thermodynamic conditions ranging from low-pressure, lowtemperature gas and liquid measurements to high- pressure liquid and dense phase measurements. To cover a part of this value chain, CO2 gas tests were carried out at the DNV test facility in Groningen in the range between 95-99% CO2 at pressures up to 35 bara. The tests considered the main flow measurement principles: ultrasonic, turbine and Coriolis meters. The performance of these meters was assessed by comparing against a dedicated reference system consisting of sonic nozzles, bearing-friction corrected turbine meters and Coriolis meters. The CO2 performance results were compared to their baseline test with natural gas. Next to the performance evaluation, the diagnostics of the meters were logged which provided useful insights in the response of the flow meters to CO2 condition. Especially the response of the ultrasonic measurement signals to CO2 gas were studied in-depth and compared to theoretical models. The good correspondence between models and experimental results gives confidence in the use of these models to predict the in-field performance of these meters under CO2 conditions.

Data acquisition in conventional fluorescent-based microarrays takes place after the completion of a hybridization phase. During the hybridization phase, target analytes bind to their corresponding capturing probes on the array. The conventional microarrays attempt to detect presence and quantify amounts of the targets by collecting a single data point, supposedly taken after the hybridization process has reached its steady-state. Recently, so-called real-time microarrays capable of acquiring not only the steady-state data but the entire kinetics of hybridization have been proposed in [1]. The richness of the information obtained by the real-time microarrays promises higher signal-to-noise ratio, smaller estimation error, and broader assay detection dynamic range compared to the conventional microarrays. In the current paper, we study the signal processing aspects of the real-time microarray data acquisition.

The robust numerical technique for high-resolution reconstructive imaging and scene analysis is developed as required for enhanced remote sensing with large scale sensor array radar/synthetic aperture radar. The problem-oriented modification of the previously proposed fused Bayesian-regularization (FBR) enhanced radar imaging method is performed to enable it to reconstruct remote sensing signatures (RSS) of interest alleviating problem illposeness due to system-level and model-level uncertainties. We report some simulation results of hydrological RSS reconstruction from enhanced real-world environmental images indicative of the efficiency of the developed method.

This work investigates the distributed detection of carbon dioxide (CO2) release from storage tanks caused by the opening of pressure relief devices via inexpensive sensor devices in an industrial context. A realistic model of the dispersion is put forward in this paper. Both full-precision and rate-limited setups for sensors are considered, and fusion rules capitalizing the dispersion model are derived. Simulations analyze the performance trends with relevant system parameters.

We propose a space-time compressive sampling (STCS) array architecture by exploiting the sparsity in the angle and frequency domain. Two Doppler-DoA estimation methods are designed to efficiently reconstruct the two-dimensional (2D) sparse signal. The STCS array together with the 2D reconstruction methods allow for accurate yet low-power location and speed estimation of moving targets. The proposed methods are not only tested by simulations but also using an experimental ultrasonic sensor array setup. © 2010 ieee.

Low-power, miniature EM radar-like sensors have made it possible to measure properties of the human speech production system in real-time, without acoustic interference, at low cost. Compression and other applications use an EM sensor measured glottal signal, combined with one or more acoustic signals, to robustly estimate voiced excitation functions, transfer functions, unvoiced speech segments, articulator gestures, and background noise. Applications are speech coding, de-noising, verification, recognition, voice (and music) synthesis, and medical uses. In speech compression, an almost 10-fold bandwidth reduction has been demonstrated, compared to a standard 2.4 kbps LPC 10 protocol.
