This presentation gives an overview of most of the activities on research and development in the technology area for landmine detection at TNO in the Netherlands. The projects cover the range from military applications to humanitarian demining. In the "conventional" detection systems area the activities on an Instrumented Prodder, Metal Detection, Ground Penetrating Radar and Thermal Infrared will be covered. signalprocessing andsensor fusion are key activities in this area. The focus for these techniques is on vehicle mounted and airborne multi-sensor systems. The activities are supported by more fundamental modelling of the interaction of sensors with the landmines. Especially the effects of the environment of the mines (background clutter, scenario) on this interaction are taken into account. Future oriented techniques: forward-looking Polarised Infrared and Laser Vibrometry for moving platforms are discussed.

An integrated design of a joint distributed source coding and an adaptive signalprocessing scheme for a virtual multiple input multiple output (V-MIMO) communications-based, cooperative wireless sensor network is proposed. We employ a distributed coding scheme that exploits inherent correlations among sensor data and an adaptive correlation tracking technique base on Recursive Least Squares (RLS) algorithm that provides improved energy efficiency compared to previously proposed such joint coding andsignalprocessing schemes for single input single output (SISO) communications based systems. An integration scheme with virtual space-time block coding based M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (M-QAM) communication is also developed. The system efficiency is analyzed for various transmission distances and various channel conditions. Our results show that the proposed system achieves significant energy savings compared to conventional designs beyond certain transmission distances. The achieved energy efficiencies and low decoding error rates justify the application of the proposed scheme in energy constrained wireless sensor networks.

Space-time adaptive processing (STAP) is a well-suited methodology to eliminate strong interference in moving-platform sensorarrays. A fundamental issue in STAP is to determine the optimal weight vector. This can be obtained either by sample matrix inverse (SMI) or by subspace projection. We perform a structure-based two-stage signal subspace reconstruction to obtain an accurate estimate of the interference subspace with small training-data support. The performance of the proposed approach is evaluated based on numerically simulation.
We consider the flat fading wireless link where the number of transmitter antennas is greater than the number of receiver antennas and the channel is known to the receiver. For such systems, the currently available li...

This study investigates a method for recognition of tea aroma using a multilayer neural network. A gas-sensing system utilising an array of quartz crystal resonators coated with plasma-organic-polymer-films is designed. Three teas, oolong, jasmine and puerh, are used as the sources of sample gas. Wavelet transform frequency analysis is applied to the signals from the gas-sensing system, and the features of the sensor response are extracted. These features are used as input vectors to a neural network. The neural network achieves an average recognition rate of 96.7% for the three tea samples. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the gas-sensing system and neural network in this application.

For autonomous flight in adverse environment, real time obstacle information is very important. There are many sensors like LiDAR, SAR which gives pretty accurate obstacle data. However, using such devices onboard is quite expensive in terms of power and operation cost. This paper introduces a technique to find the size and distance of obstacle using stereo images by correlating the physical size to in-pixel size. This technique allows agile UAVs to fly in un-cooperative environments without any heavy sensor.

Three-line scanner satellites obtain in-track triple images using multiple linear charged-couple devices (CCDs). These highly overlapped triple images provide valuable intersection geometry and similar features between images and are therefore beneficial to three-dimensional (3-D) modeling. This study focused on orientation modeling and space intersection for in-track triple images and compared the accuracy of independent and block-adjustments using different models. The independent adjustment compensates the orbital error of each image using time-dependent polynomials equations and compensates image-space error with parameter transformation. Block adjustment corrects the orbital error of triple images simultaneously. The test data are ALOS/PRISM triplet images. The 3-D positioning accuracies of the independent adjustment model achieved 6.7 m and 6.5 m in horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. By contrast, the block adjustment achieved 7.7 m and 4.6 m accuracies in horizontal and vertical directions, respectively. Experimental results showed that the accuracy of positioning between independent and block adjustment is similar, but only 10 control points were used in the block adjustment. The proposed block adjustment significantly reduced the demand of the control points.
