How to identify apple stem-ends and calyxes from defects is still a challenging project due to the complexity of the process. It is know that the stem-ends and calyxes could not appear at the same image. Therefore, a contaminated apple distinguishing method is developed in this article. That is, if there are two or more doubtful blobs on an apple's image, the apple is contaminated one. There is no complex imaging process and pattern recognition in this method, because it is only need to find how many blobs (including the stem-ends and calyxes) in an apple's image. Machine vision systems which based 3 color cameras are presented in this article regarding the online detection of external defects. On this system, the fruits placed on rollers are rotating while moving, and each camera which placed on the line grabs 3 images from an apple. After the apple segmented from the black background by multi-thresholds method, defect's segmentation and counting is performed on the apple's images. Good separation between normal and contaminated apples was obtained for three- camera system (94.5%), comparing to one-camera system (63.3%), two- camera system (83.7%). The disadvantage of this method is that it could not distinguish different defects types. Defects of apples, such as bruising, scab, fungal growth, and disease, are treated as the same.

In order to understand the airflow pattern of natural ventilation in typical piggery in South-east China, a three dimensional ventilation simulation study was carried out based on the Navier-Stocks Equation by the aid of the fluid dynamics CFX software. The inlets are mounted in windward sidewall in equidistance along the ridge of the piggery, the airflow guiding passages are set along the roof, on which installed a lambdoidal coping. The sty was incorporated into the simulation model as porous medium, and the factor of outer wind velocity varying with the height was considered. The simulation results shows: there is a significant difference in mass flow of different location of inlets, the central ones is bigger than the side ones. For the guiding openings, the central, right and left account for 64.76%, 29.53% and 5.71% respectively. The airflow inside the piggery is not even, some anticlockwise and clockwise circumfluence are formed in different direction. The airflow on the vertical plane through the inlets are much intense than that in between. Inside the stys, there displays unbalanced and lower airflow velocity, the average airflow velocity in the right sty is higher than that of the left.

To solve problems in detecting the origin of agricultural products, this paper brings about an embedded data-based terminal, applies middleware thinking, and provides reusable long-range two-way data exchange module between business equipment and data acquisition systems. The system is constructed by data collection node and data center nodes. Data collection nodes taking embedded data terminal NetBoxII as the core, consisting of data acquisition interface layer, controlling information layer and data exchange layer, completing the data reading of different front-end acquisition equipments, and packing the data TCP to realize the data exchange between data center nodes according to the physical link (GPRS / CDMA / Ethernet). Data center node consists of the data exchange layer, the data persistence layer, and the business interface layer, which make the data collecting durable, and provide standardized data for business systems based on mapping relationship of collected data and business data. Relying on public communications networks, application of the system could establish the road of flow of information between the scene of origin certification and management center, and could realize the real-time collection, storage and processing between data of origin certification scene and databases of certification organization, and could achieve needs of long-range detection of agricultural origin.

In order to meet government supervision of pork production safety as well as consumer's right to know what they buy, this study adopts animal identification, mobile PDA reader , GPRS and other information technologies, and put forward a data collection method to set up rearing files of pig in smallhold pig farming, and designs related metadata structures and its mobile database, and develops a mobile PDA embedded system to collect individual information of pig and uploading into the remote central database, and finally realizes mobile links to the a specific website. The embedded PDA can identify both a special pig bar ear tag appointed by the Ministry of Agricultural and a general data matrix bar ear tag designed by this study by mobile reader, and can record all kinds of inputs data including bacterins, feed additives, animal drugs and even some forbidden medicines and submitted them to the center database through GPRS. At the same time, the remote center database can be maintained by mobile PDA and GPRS, and finally reached pork tracking from its origin to consumption and its tracing through turn-over direction. This study has suggested a feasible technology solution how to set up network pig electronic rearing files involved smallhold pig farming based on farmer and the solution is proved practical through its application in the Tianjin's pork quality traceability system construction. Although some individual techniques have some adverse effects on the system running such as GPRS transmitting speed now, these will be resolved with the development of communication technology. The full implementation of the solution around China will supply technical supports in guaranteeing the quality and safety of pork production supervision and meet consumer demand.

The present study aims to determine spectral bands that are best suited for characterizing rice agronomic variables. The data for this study came from ground-level hyperspectral reflectance measurements of rice at different stage. Reflectance was measured in discrete narrow bands between 350 and 2500 nm. Observed rice agronomic variables included leaf area index (LAI), wet biomass (WBM including aboveground wet biomass-AGWBM, leaf wet biomass-LWBM, stem wet biomass-SWBM), and dry biomass(DBM: including aboveground dry biomass-AGDBM, leaf dry biomass-LDBM, stem dry biomass.) Firstly, narrow band ratio vegetation index (NBRVI) involving all possible two bands combinations of discrete channels were tested. The second part of the paper describes a rigorous search procedure to identify the best NBRVI predictors of rice agronomic variables. Special narrow band lambda (λ1) versus lambda (λ2) plots of R2 values illustrates the most effective wavelength combinations (λ1 and λ2) and band-widths (△λ1 and △λ2) for predicting rice agronomic variables at different development stages. The best of the NBRVI models explained 58% to 83% variability rice agronomic variables at different development stage. A strong relationship with rice agronomic variables is located in red-edge, 700 nm to 750 nm, the longer portion of red (650nm to 700nm), the shorter portion of green (500nm to 550nm), a particular portion of NIR (800nm to 850nm). They are followed by moisture-sensitive NIR(1150nm to 1200nm), and two portions of SWIR (1600nm to 1650nm).

The objectives of developing optimum leaf area index dynamic models for rape (OLAIDM) was to develop Rape Cultivation Simulation-Optimization- Decision Making System(Rape-CSODS) , to design its planting , to regulate and control its growth and development, and to fulfill its high yield, good quality, high benefits and standard production eventually. The OLAIDM were developed based on field experiments with 3 cultivars, 6 sowing dates, 2 types of plant pattern and 4 sites from 2002 to 2007 in middle and lower valley of Yangtze river in China and relative data from references of rape researches, employed ideas of R/WCSODS (Rice/Wheat Cultivation Simulation- Optimization-Decision Making System), and in the same time, the OLAIMR and its parameters also were assessed, calibrated and tested. The average absolute deviation(de), correlation coefficients(r) and the standard errors of their absolute deviation(Sde) of between the observed and simulated values for LAI of two cultivars in Wuhan and Nanjing were -0.03～0.1533, 0.9707～0.9997 and0.1332～0.4032, respectively. 1:1 line of them were in Fig. 1 to 4. Multi-factors such as the ramification types, cultivars, and light et al. were taken into account in this study, therefore, the OLAIDM with general adaptability, clear yield aim, mechanism, and dynamic characteristic can simulate optimum LAI dynamic for rape under different sites, cultivars and ramification types, and yielding levels.

The new digital landscape is influencing and challenging conventional delivery modes in education. Mixed Reality (MR), one of the newest technologies explored in edutainment, promises the potential to revolutionise learning and teaching, making learners' experience more "engaging". In this paper, we will introduce a MR classroom developed for a local primary school in Singapore. Currently, two modules on Solar System and Plant System had been developed in our MR classroom, providing support for classroom teaching and self-learning. This novel, interesting learning experience is provided by combining tangible interactions and mixed reality technologies. History has shown us that as new technologies evolve, there is a need to carry out user studies as early as possible, to identify and address usability and usefulness issues. There is little known work carried out to understand students' acceptance of the MR technology for learning, and the factors pertinent to influence their intention to use it. A study on our MR classroom was conducted. Participants were surveyed on their perceptions towards the Plant Mixed Reality program. Preliminary results seemed to indicate participants' intention to use MR for learning, and it was influenced directly by perceived usefulness, and indirectly through perceived ease of use and social influence. The paper concludes with a discussion on design implications on MR systems. © 2007 ACM.
