In this paper we propose a ray-tracing method for modeling the correlation of the received signals by two or more antennas operating in a multipath environment. Assuming that the maximum excess delay in the channel is known, we create an elliptical region surrounding both the transmitter and receiver antennas. A number of scatterers are randomly distributed in this region. They scatter the incoming waves spherically. Considering a Rayleigh amplitude and uniform phase for the waves scattered by each scatterer and computing their superposition in each receive antenna, we have determined the amplitude and phase of the received signals and used this signals to obtain joint pdf (probability distribution function) of the received signals. This model has the advantage of being applicable for any configuration of antennas. Furthermore, the joint pdf of the received wave amplitudes, independent of the shape of the receiver array, can be calculated and used to produce correlation coefficient and also higher-order statistics.

As process technology scales down, power wall starts to hinder improvements in processor performance. Performance optimization has to proceed under a power constraint. The co-optimization requires exploration into a huge design space containing both performance and power factors, whose size is over costly for extensive traditional simulations. This paper describes a unified model covering both performance and power. The model consists of workload parameters, architectural parameters plus corresponding power parameters with a good degree of accuracy compared with physical processors and simulators. We apply the model to the problem of co-optimizing the power and performance. Concrete insights into the tradeoffs of designs for performance and power are obtained in the process of co-optimization. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2006.

This paper birefly introduces a Chinese digital input method named as CKCDIM (CKC Digital Input Method) and then applies it to the Symbian OS as an example, and it also proposes a framework of input method which adopted the Client/Server architecture for the handheld computers. To improve the performance of CKCDIM, this paper puts forward a dynamic and self-study language model which based on a general language model and user language model, and proposes two indexes which are the average number of pressed-keys (ANPK) and the hit rate of first characters (HRFC) to measure the performance of the input method. Meanwhile, this paper brings forward a modified Church-Gale smoothing method to reduce the size of general language model to meet the need of mobile phone. At last, the experiments prove that the dynamic and self-study language model is a steady model and can improve the performance of CKCDIM. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2006.

Programmable vertex processing unit increases the programmability and enables customizations of transformation and lighting in the graphics pipeline. Furthermore, it offers various effects such as procedural vertex animation and deformation, which were impossible to handle in fixed vertex processing. Since it is hard to find a programmable graphics hardware for the embedded systems such as mobile phones, we’ve designed and implemented a programmable vertex processing unit based on the OpenGL ES 2.0 specification. In this paper, we explain the architecture, instruction format, implementation and test results of our vertex processing unit. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2006.

Recent developments in ad hoc and personal networking as well as grid computing have resulted in a range of new applications. In this paper we examine one of these applications from the perspective of its potential users. During a two week field trial a group of 24 high school students were able to use the ad hoc screen sharing application based on Wireless Grids technology. Results show that although students express a general belief in new technologies, they are also reluctant to use it when it comes to their personal situation. For the further development of applications in this area this means that developers should focus on applications that run within a trusted context and/or 'hide' these applications in the lower levels of the protocol stack.

Autonomic computing (AC), self-management based on high level guidance from humans, is increasingly gaining momentum as the way forward in designing reliable systems to hide complexity and conquer IT management costs. Effectively, AC may be viewed as Policy-Based Self-Management. In this paper we look at the motivation for utilizing NASA requirements-based programming technologies for mechanically transforming policies (expressed in restricted natural language, or appropriate graphical notations) into a provably equivalent formal model that can be used as the basis for code generation and other transformations, with the goal of self-generation of provable autonomic policies. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2005.

Intrinsically motivated intelligent rooms

Intelligent rooms are responsive environments in which human activities are monitored and responses are generated to facilitate these activities. Research and development on intelligent rooms currently focuses on the integration of multiple sensor devices with pre-programmed responses to specific triggers. Developments in intelligent agents towards intrinsically motivated learning agents can be integrated with the concept of an intelligent room. The resulting model focuses developments in intelligent rooms on a characteristic reasoning process that uses motivation to guide action and learning. Using a motivated learning agent model as the basis for an intelligent room opens up the possibility of intelligent environments being able to adapt both to people’s changing usage patterns and to the addition of new capabilities, via the addition of new sensors and effectors, with relatively little need for reconfiguration by humans. © ifip international Federation for Information Processing 2005.

This paper compares the functional programming language Sac to Hpf with respect to specificational elegance and runtime performance. A well-known benchmark, red-black SOR, serves as a case study. After presenting the Hpf reference implementation alternative Sac implementations are discussed. Eventually, performance figures show the ability to compile highly generic Sac specifications into machine code that outperforms the Hpf implementation on a shared memory multiprocessor by a factor of about 3. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2000.

Large scale, widely used programs such as operating systems are never complete. Interpretations and possible significance of some of the observed phenomena are discussed.
