Throughput is an important performance consideration for multihop wireless networks. In this paper, we study the joint link scheduling and power control problem, focusing on maximizing the network throughput. We formulate the MAximum THroughput link Scheduling with Power Control (MATH-SPC) problem, and present a Mixed Integer Linear programming (MILP) formulation to provide optimal solutions. However, simply maximizing the throughput leads to a severe bias on bandwidth allocation among all links. In order to enhance both throughput and fairness, we define a new parameter, the Demand Satisfaction Factor (DSF), to characterize the fairness of bandwidth allocation. We formulate the MAximum Throughput fAir link Scheduling with Power Control (MATA-SPC) problem and present an MILP formulation for this problem. We also present an effective polynomial time heuristic algorithm, namely, the Serial LP Rounding (SLPR) heuristic. Our numerical results show that bandwidth can be fairly allocated among all links/flows by solving our MATA-SPC formulation or using our heuristic algorithm at the cost of a minor reduction of network throughput. © 2005 IEEE.

Recently, there has been extensive research on integrating cellular networks and ad hoc networks to overcome the limitations of cellular networks. Although several schemes have been proposed to use such hybrid networks to improve the performance of individual multicast groups, they do not address the Quality of Service (QoS) issues when multiple groups are present in the networks. Our work, on the other hand, considers an interesting scenario of hybrid networks when an ad hoc network cannot commodate all the groups and a base station has to select a subset of groups to optimize its bandwidth savings and maximize the utilization of the ad hoc network, while providing QoS support for multicast users. In this work, we develop a network model for multicast admission control which takes wireless interference into account, formulate the group selection problem as a multidimensional knapsack problem, and propose an Integer Linear programming (ILP) formulation and a polynomial-time dynamic algorithm. We also examine a distributed implementation of the dynamic algorithm in real systems. Simulation studies demonstrate that the dynamic algorithm is able to achieve very competitive performance under various conditions, in comparison with the optimal solution computed by the ILP approach. © 2005 IEEE.

On-chip memory, in the form of (hardware-managed) cache,(software-managed) scratchpad memory (SPM) or some combination of both, is widely used in embedded systems. Most high-end embedded systems have both cache and SPM on-chip since each addresses a different need. Caches allow easy integration and are often effective but are un-predictable. SPMs are more energy-efficient than caches since they do not need complex tag-decoding logic. In addition, SPMs provide absolutely predictable performance but the programmer or compiler must schedule explicit data/instruction transfers between the SPM and off-chip main memory in an embedded system. In today's industry, this task is largely accomplished manually. The programmer often spends a lot of time on partitioning data and/or instructions and inserting explicit data/instruction transfers required between the SPM and main memory. Such a manual approach is time-consuming and error-prone. Obtaining satisfactory solutions for large application programs by hand can be challenging. Furthermore, hand-crafted code is not portable since it is usually customized for one particular architecture. This talk introduces a compiler approach, called memory coloring that we have recently developed to automatically allocating the arrays in a program to an SPM. The arrays are frequently used in embedded applications such as image processing and signal processing. The novelty of this approach lies in partitioning an SPM into a pseudo register file, splitting the live ranges of arrays to create potential data transfer statements between the SPM and of-chip main memory, and finally, adapting an existing graph-colouring algorithm for register allocation to assign the arrays in the program into the register file. This compiler-directed approach is efficient due to the practical efficiency of graph-colouring algorithms. We have implemented this work in the SUIF/mach SUIF compiler framework. We consider the problem of designing logical topologies for grooming IP traffic over wavelength-routed networks; in particular non-bifurcated minimum hop routing is used to route IP traffic. We present two approaches to solve this problem. The first approach is a two-step approach where in the first step we solve a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation to determine an initial single shortest path logical topology; this is followed by a pruning approach to find an improved logical topology in the second step. Our second approach is a heuristic solution for moderate size networks. We then consider different performance measures to show the effectiveness of our solution approaches in generating minimum average packet hop-based logical topology

Web service orchestration technologies are emerging as practical means to integrate business partners' applications with higher levels of functionality, negligible performance degradation, reduced development effort, and better quality of service. However, because most compositional languages address distribution concerns at the early stage of the business process definition, Web-based applications become more static arid more difficult to develop. In this paper we propose a method to reduce the complexity of Web service orchestration by using a new compositional language named BPCL (business process coordination language) that keeps apart physical distribution details. Furthermore, a coordination architecture has been built to support the common process abstractions used in business collaboration by means of a synchronization and communication infrastructure. In the proposed approach, to obtain a Web-based application, aspect oriented programming is used to weave locality transparent BPCL programs with the distribution handling capabilities supported by the coordination architecture. Besides of simplifying the development of orchestrated Web-based applications, the main contribution of this work consists on providing a coordination language and architecture that promote greater dynamism, noninvasive code reuse and efficient execution.

Due to varying wireless channel conditions, the IEEE 802.11 wireless local area network (WLAN) standard supports multiple modulation types to accommodate the tradeoff between data rate and bit error rate. In Heusse(2003), Rousseau, Berger-Sabbatel and Duda theoretically analyzed a performance anomaly when multi-rate stations with different modulation types exist in IEEE 802.11 WLANs. The performance anomaly is: the aggregate throughput of those stations transmitting at a higher data rate will dramatically degrade below the same level as that of those stations transmitting at a lower data rate. In this paper, we address the anomaly problem and formulate a nonlinear mixed integer programming problem to maximize the total aggregate throughput of all stations subject to that the channel occupancy times among the stations transmitting at different data rates are kept at a fairness ratio. With its aid, a single-hop WLAN can dynamically accommodate the resource access usage to maximize the system throughput in varying fading environments. We prove that the optimization problem is intractable and propose a heuristic solution based on a penalty function with gradient-based approach to solve it. We show the effectiveness of the approach via computational experiments and provide some useful guidelines to regulate the parameters needed for the approach.

This paper describes the semantic PARLAY X with QoS/QoE for 4G network. New open network service delivery platform standards such as PARLAY X support dynamically the seamless mobile application on top of different wireless network technology in face of changing value chains and business models. But the existing PARLAY X lacks in considering QoS/QoE. Therefore, to solve this issue, this paper suggests the semantic PARLAY X with QoS/QoE. The object of this paper is to support the architecture and the application programming interface (API) of the network service for QoS/QoE in NGN. The semantic PARLAY X can provide users with QoS/QoE in network according to the detected context and user's preference, after detecting the context such as location and speed and user's preference. The architecture of the semantic PARLAY X is comprised of the functions for context-awareness, adaptation, personalization. The semantic PARLAY X is to make a role of the broker between SCE and PARLAY gateway

Mobile Interface explores emerging interfaces for mobile telecommunications. It is driven by the inquiry of conventional written languages on mobile interfaces that are, to date, hampered by technological realization, linguistic transformation and socio-cultural diversity. For better connecting human beings both to one another and to the expanding digital horizon, Mobile Interface implements a Universal Mobile Language mobilizing for the future linguistic systems. Forward-looking letter types, new communication behaviors and advent interface or interaction techniques are the plastic and fluid elements that redefine the flux and quality of digital communication in the forthcoming Ubiquitous World of Communication. With clearly articulated interdisciplinary and entrepreneurial approaches, designing the ultimate cultural artifacts of contemporary telecommunications will enable technologies for better understanding and expression in creating advances of using mobile languages. After all, Mobile Interface discovers and cultivates a new set of shared intellectual and practical knowledge that are becoming the foundations of digital convergence of artistic expression, functional design, software programming, network community, psychological analysis, from academic field to commercial segment. Large communities of researchers distributed around the world are engaged in analyzing huge collections of data generated by scientific instruments and replicated on distributed resources. In such an environment, scientists need to have the ability to carry out their studies by transparently accessing distributed data and computational resources. In this paper, we propose and develop a Grid broker that mediates access to distributed resources by (a) discovering suitable data sources for a given analysis scenario, (b) suitable computational resources, (c) optimally mapping analysis jobs to resources, (d) deploying and monitoring job execution on selected resources, (e) accessing data from local or remote data source during job execution and (f) collating and presenting results. The broker supports a declarative and dynamic parametric programming model for creating grid applications. We have used this model in grid-enabling a high energy physics analysis application (Belle Analysis Software Framework) on a grid testbed having resources distributed across Australia. Based on an extensive field study of current firefighting practices, we have developed a system called Siren to support tacit communication between firefighters with multiple levels of redundancy in both communication and user alerts. Siren provides a foundation for gathering, integrating, and distributing contextual data, such as location and temperature. It also simplifies the development of firefighting applications using a peer-to-peer network of embedded devices through a uniform programming interface based on the information space abstraction. As a proof of concept, we have developed a prototype context-aware messaging application in the firefighting domain. We have evaluated this application with firefighters and they have found it to be useful for improving many aspects of their current work practices. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.
