The dynamism of web technologies and the emergence of advanced and intricate web applications strongly call for the definition of the software development life cycle paradigms from the perspective of web engineering discipline. Hybrid models like Waterfall, V-Model and Iterative Development have been in use for formal software development while recent development methodologies are Agile. Yet, these models need to be assessed and adapted for the web engineering contexts to fit problems that are specific to web application development, for example, rapid development cycles, high user interaction, the need for scalability and constantly shifting security requirements. This paper, introduces five fundamental SDLC models of web engineering, namely the Waterfall model, V-Model, Spiral model, Agile, and DevOps. It also discusses how developments on basic web engineering components such as client-server model, crossplatform Web, rapid prototyping, and continuous deployment map to various phases of the Web SDLC namely requirement analysis, design, construction, testing, and maintenance. Upon reviewing the strengths and weaknesses of each model as applied to web development, this paper introduces a new approach that combines the best elements of Agility and conventional models into a single framework competent for modern web applications.
