Early diagnosis of breast cancer can improve the survival rate by detecting cancer at initial stage. In this paper, an efficient computer-based mammogram retrieval system is proposed, which helps in early diagnosis of breast cancer by comparing the current case with past cases. The proposed steps include cropping of mammograms, feature extraction using local binary pattern (LBP) and k-mean clustering. Using LBP, k-mean generates the clusters based on the visual similarity of mammograms. Further, query image features are matched with all cluster representatives to find the closest cluster. Finally, images are retrieved from this closest cluster using Euclidean distance similarity measure. So, at the searching time the query image is searched only in small subset depending upon cluster size and is not compared with all the images in the database, reflects a superior response time with good retrieval performances. Experiments on benchmark mammography image analysis society (MIAS) database confirm the effectiveness of this work.

Novel tools for colour imageprocessing are presented. Unlike many magnitudes dealt with in engineering, the hue variable of a colour image is circular and requires a special treatment. Special techniques have been advanced in statistics for the analysis of data from angular variables;likewise in imageprocessing for the processing of the hue variable. We give a definition of the median and of the range of angular data and apply their running versions on images to smooth them and to detect hue edges. The segmentation aims the partitioning of a digital image into segments/objects in order to simplify its analyze. Its comprehensive application makes it an important section of computervision studies where thresholding is one of the most important techniques. This paper proposes the application of a genetic algorithm associated with a thresholding method in a way that it makes more practical the location of optimal thresholds in view of the fact that the expansion in multiple thresholds of already consecrated methods to perform this processing might be too memory consuming and time exhaustive to the system. A comparison between values reached by the proposed method and Otsu's method are presented for one and two levels showing good results, in addition to the application and results in higher levels of the proposed algorithm which are visual satisfactory to distinguish the original objects by human vision with low range variations of the value.
