An adaptive nonlinear control law was used for the regulation of the ethanol concentration in industrial bakers' yeast production. Based on the closed-loop linearizing approach, the control law was originally designed for a 20 L fermentor. The control law required ethanol measurement and oxygen transfer rate evaluation. Except for volume value, the scale-up to a 60 000 L fermentor was done without any change in model parameters or tuning parameters values. The results at the industrial scale can be considered as good as that obtained at the laboratory scale.

This paper is on the problem of short-term hydro scheduling, particularly concerning a head-dependent hydro chain. We propose a novel mixed-integer nonlinearprogramming approach for optimizing power generation efficiency. The proposed approach considers not only the nonlinear dependence between power generation, water discharge and head, but also discontinuous operating regions, in order to obtain more realistic and feasible results. Numerical results, based on one of the Portuguese cascaded hydro systems, illustrate the proficiency of the proposed approach. Finally, conclusions are duly drawn.

In this paper, the nonlinear constitutive relation of shape memory alloy is proposed. Based on this, the nonlinear dynamic model of a shape memory alloy composite doubly-clamped beam is established. Multi-scale method is used to obtain an approximate solution of the system. Finally, the theoretical results were verified by experiments. The experimental results show that the nonlinear characteristics of the system response in the high-order mode are caused by the hysteresis nonlinear characteristics of shape memory alloy. The results of this paper is helpful for the applications of shape memory alloy composite structure in engineering.

Discriminative nonlinear dimensionality reduction aims at a visualization of a given set of data such that the information contained in the data points which is of particular relevance for a given class labeling is displayed. We link this task to an integration of the Fisher information, and we discuss its difference from supervised classification. We present two potential application areas: speed-up of unsupervised nonlinear visualization by integration of prior knowledge, and visualization of a given classifier such as an SVM in low dimensions.

Even if nonlinear system identification tends to provide highly accurate models these last decades, the user still remains interested in finding the good balance between high accuracy models and moderate complexity. In this paper, both a dedicated neural network design and a model reduction approach are proposed in order to improve this balance. The proposed neural network design helps to reduce the number of parameters of the model after the training phase preserving the estimation accuracy of the non reduced model. Even if this reduction is achieved by a convenient choice of the activation functions and the initial conditions of the synaptic weights, it nevertheless leads to models among the most encountered in the literature assuring all the interest of such method. To validate the proposed approach, we identified the Wiener-Hammerstein benchmark nonlinear system proposed in SYSID2009 [1].

In this paper, a tabu search (TS) method is proposed to find a global solution for fuzzy linear programming (FLP). Two additional factors, distribution factor (DF) and similarity factor (SF), are also introduced for TS to enhance the searching performance. The application of DF and SF makes the TS to surf in a larger search space and reduces the possibility of re-searching the visited areas. A simulation is done to show the efficiency of the proposed study.
