Currently, microwave is one of the most interesting ways to conduct drying of dielectric materials, in particular coal. In this paper, two processes were considered - heating and drying. The temperature field of the coal semi-mass in the heating mode is found analytically strictly with the use of integral transformations. The drying process is formulated as a nonlinear Stephen problem with a moving boundary of the liquid-vapor phase transformation. The temperature distribution, speed and drying time in this mode are determined approximately analytically. Parametric analysis of the influence of the material and boundary conditions on the dynamics of warming up and drying is revealed.

The objective of this research is to compare the actual stream discharge results from historical data over an extended period of time from two super sophisticated, non-linear expert models, the neural network and the genetic programming models, based on the same set of multiple input parameters. Specific concern is an assessment of the performance and ability of each system to forecast stream discharge of the river system. Several methods of evaluating the results can be expressed in terms of mean absolute error (MAE), square error (SE), root-mean-square error (RMSE), and percentage error (PE). Both models eventually proved useful in analyzing streamflow forecasting in the study area where water resources issues are deemed critical. This study elicits microclimatological factors in association with the basin-wide geological environment, exhibits the derivation of a representative neural network model and the genetic programming model, and then summarizes the behavior between the rainfall/run-off patterns and the resultant strewn flow rate in a river system given the influence of dynamic basin features such as soil moisture, soil temperature, air temperature, air relative humidity, and precipitation. Three weather stations are deployed as a supplementary data-gathering network in addition to over five USGS gage stations in the semi-arid Nueces River Basin, South Texas. An integrated database of physical basin features is developed and used to support neural network system and semi-structure genetic programming modeling approach to perform stream flow predictions. Standard model consists of 20 independent variables (15 meteorological inputs, 5 streamflow inputs) for an output of the total discharge of the river basin. The model calibrations were done using a randomly selected subset of the data, and the validation was performed with the remaining data (unseen data).

In domain of analytic cursive word recognition, there are two main approaches: explicit segmentation based and implicit segmentation based. However, both approaches have their own shortcomings. To overcome individual weaknesses, this paper presents a hybrid strategy for recognition of strings of characters (words or numerals). In a two stage dynamic programming based, lexicon driven approach, first an explicit segmentation is applied to segment either cursive handwritten words or numeric strings. However, at this stage, segmentation points are not finalized. In the second verification stage, statistical features are extracted from each segmented area to recognize characters using a trained neural network. To enhance segmentation and recognition accuracy, lexicon is consulted using existing dynamic programming matching techniques. Accordingly, segmentation points are altered to decide true character boundaries by using lexicon feedback. A rigorous experimental protocol shows high performance of the proposed method for cursive handwritten words and numeral strings.
