The use of narrowband tunable THz radiation for biomedical sensing applications is discussed. The THz radiation is generated via optical rectification in periodically poled nonlinear materials in a frequency range from 100 GHz to 3 THz. Center frequency and bandwidth can easily be adjusted to the requirements of the application. Different THz sensors utilizing evanescent THz fields - are presented including waveguides and photonic bandgap structures.

This paper presents an approach to compute the worst case gain of the interconnection of a finite time horizon linear time variant (LTV) system and a perturbation. The input/output behaviour of the uncertainty is described by integral quadratic constraints (IQC). A new algorithm to obtain an upper bound on the worst case gain based on nonlinear optimization over a parameterized Riccati differential equation is proposed. The Riccati differential equation is derived from dissipation conditions. It provides an efficient alternative to a similar approach based on solving a semidefinite program. The algorithm is applied to the atmospheric flight phase of a space launcher. A comparison to the semidefinite programming approach highlights the capabilities of this new approach.

We report the effect of rGO on structural, electrical, spectral andnonlinear optical properties of reduced graphene oxide-polyaniline (rGO-PANI) nanocomposites. The rGO-PANI composites with different concentration of rGO were synthesized through an in situ polymerization method. The structural and optical studies of the composite powders show that the template effect of rGO provides a well ordered structure of PANI with better crystallinity. This may be due to the strong electrostatic, p-p, and hydrogen bond interactions between PANI and rGO materials. The conductivity of the composite material increases with respect to pure PANI up to a particular limit, and then decreases. It is mainly due to the disordered conjugated structure of PANI. The nonlinear optical properties of rGO-PANI composites are evaluated by Z-scan technique using a continuous wave nd: YAG laser at a wavelength of 532 nm. Two photon absorption is the main mechanism behind the self defocusing nature of rGO-PANI composites. The saturable absorption behavior of the material is due to the depletion of valence band and the band filling effect of sp(2) carbon domains. The nonlinear absorption coefficient and refractive index of the samples are also estimated and the results show that rGO-PANI composite material is a promising candidate for the applications in optical switching, optical sensors and in ultrafast photonics. Oil price time series is a nonlinear long-memory series, in this paper, a novel clustering method based on the symbiotic evolutionary and the immune programming algorithm is proposed, which is implemented for the prediction of oil price time series. In the design of the neural network, the number and positions of hidden layer are automatically adjust through symbiotic evolutionary and the immune programming. The weights of output layer are decided by the recursive least squares algorithm. The proposed immune clustering neural model has been implemented for New York harbor residual fuel oil prices, and compared with the traditional RBF neural network method. The test results reveal that the symbiotic evolution immune clustering neural network method possesses far superior forecast precision than the traditional method.

This paper presents the architecture and implementation of a real time adaptive NLMS filter for non-stationary noise cancellation in a real-time environment. The active noise control techniques using adaptive digital filters are very much suitable and well proven. The proposed efficient Adaptive Noise Canceller is realized using Xilinx System Generator 12.3 on Spartan 3E FPGA. System Generator is a DSP design tool from Xilinx that enables the use of The Mathworks model-based design environment, Simulink for FPGA design. All FPGA implementation steps including Synthesis, place and Route are automatically performed to generate an FPGA programming file and the design is evaluated in terms of speed, hardware resources and power dissipation.

This contribution presents an MPI-based parallel computational framework for simulation and gradient-based structural optimization of geometrically nonlinear and large-scale structural finite element models. The field of computational structural analysis is gaining more and more importance in product design. In order to obtain an impression about possible approaches of design improvement already in an early planning phase, an efficient optimization tool is desired that requires only few modelling effort. This demand can be satisfied by a combined analysis and optimization tool working on the same model. To this purpose the finite element based optimization method is an excellent approach, leading to the highest possible diversity within the optimization process.

A large variety of nonlinear systems have been treated by a common approach that emphasizes the fluctuation of spatial patterns. By using the same method of analysis it is possible to discuss the chaotic behaviors of quark jets and logistic map in the same language. Critical behaviors of quark-hadron phase transition in heavy-ion collisions and of photon production at the threshold of lasing can also be described by a common scaling behavior. The universal approach also makes possible an insight into the recently discovered phenomenon of wind reversal in cryogenic turbulence as a manifestation of self-organized criticality.
