Named Data Networking (ndN) featuring in-network caching capability is a large effort that exemplifies information-centric approach to networking by shifting emphasis from hosts to data so as to meet growing demand on content. This work explores a scheme that enables a ndN domain to make full use of its in-network caches to enhance its performance, availability, and reliability. Currently, each ndN router independently determines what contents to cache and is unaware of content cached in nearby routers and thus their caches are not utilized in an efficient way. This paper proposes to have routers in a ndN domain share cached data and coordinate to make caching decisions (which is dubbed in-network cooperative caching) and formulates it into a constrained optimization problem. The Lagrangian relaxation and primal-dual decomposition method is applied to decompose the optimization problem into object placement subproblems and object locating subproblems, each of which can be solved in a distributed manner at each router, such that the in-network cooperative caching is addressed in a distributed way. Our simulation results, although preliminary, suggest that our scheme can benefit users, Internet Service Providers (ISPs) as well as content servers, and the improvement can be as much as 88% compared to current ndN caching policy.

Web visualization is of importance for distributed measurement system. It can help network operators optimize network more effectively. In this paper, we introduce a visualization method based on HTML5. HTML5 is the next version of Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML), aiming to reduce the need for dynamic visualization technologies based on third party plug-ins, like Adobe Flash. Measurement data are displayed on the web in the form of plot using HTML5 canvas tag. The plot can be refreshed dynamically with real-time measurement data by using Ajax. This paper also describes how to utilize HTML5 to implement network topology visualization. The topology graph can display state of monitoring nodes. In brief, the utilization of HTML5 in this system meets the need of dynamic visualization without third party plug-ins.

This paper introduces a hardware model of a novel parameterized architecture, which is easy to integrate into almost any design. The architecture enables matrix-formed swarm of heterogeneous smart objects to form an intelligent computing cloud, which can adapt its computing parallelism to available objects automatically in logic pre-synthesis. Data path, consisting of numerous block processing elements, is in generic form distributed or hardwired into objects. parallelization is achieved by using multiple data processing elements in several locations simultaneously, to get the best computation performance. This computing architecture is fully standard CMOS-process compatible and can also utilize FPGA technology, if data path alteration is needed. In this paper, the first simulation results are demonstrated, proofing the concept.

Target tracking with the wireless sensor networks (WSN) has been an issue with plenty of potentiality and challenge. The rapid development of the biology has created a new way for extracting natural regulating mechanisms. In this paper, a novel bio-inspired distributed object-tracking approach (BDOA) based on the information circulating principle of the endocrine system of human body is proposed. The decentralized nodes can tune themselves spontaneously by exchanging information among their local neighbors. A probability-based scheme for the information exchange is introduced to guarantee the persistence of tracking towards invading objects and inhibit the status fluctuation of the network. Simulation shows that this decentralized network with the proposed BDOA can work in a stable status without guidance of central commands. For the tracking performance, the proposed BDOA outperforms the other algorithms and the tracking mission against the invading object can be accomplished more efficiently and persistently.

The Polish grid Initiative commenced in 2009 as a part of the PL-grid project funded under the framework of the Innovative Economy Operational Programme. The main purpose of this Project was to provide the Polish scientific community with an IT basic platform making use of grid computer clusters, enabling e-science research in various fields. The Project established a country-wide computing infrastructure, which supports scientific research through integration of experimental data and results of advanced computer simulations carried out by geographically-dispersed teams. The solutions applied in setting up this e-infrastructure ensured integration with other similar platforms around the world. The Polish grid Infrastructure created within the PL-grid project will be continuously maintained and extended as a new, 3-year project (2012-2014) that has started recently: "PLgrid PLUS: Polish Roadmap toward Domain-Specific Infrastructure for Supporting Computational Science in European Research Area". Its most important task is preparation of specific computing environments – so called domain grids – I.e., solutions, services and extended infrastructure (including software), tailored to the needs of different groups of scientists. Entity coreference is the process to decide which identifiers (e.g., person names, locations, ontology instances, etc.) refer to the same real world entity. In the Semantic Web, entity coreference can be used to detect equivalence relationships between heterogeneous Semantic Web datasets to explicitly link coreferent ontology instances via the owl:sameAs property. Due to the large scale of Semantic Web data today, we propose two pruning techniques for scalably detecting owl:sameAs links between ontology instances by comparing the similarity of their context graphs. First, a sampling based technique is designed to estimate the potential contribution of each RDF node in the context graph and prune insignificant context. Furthermore, a utility function is defined to reduce the cost of performing such estimations. We evaluate our pruning techniques on three Semantic Web instance categories. We show that the pruning techniques enable the entity coreference system to run 10 to 35 times faster than without them while still maintaining comparably good F1-scores. Ignoring the physical relationship between two peers, traditional structured Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems, whose peers are arranged in a logical ring according to distributed Hash Table (DHT), have some defects on delay and bandwidth for physical neighbor peers. We proposed a layered network structure to make full use of the location information of each peer. In this structure, all peers are separated into several groups according to their location information indicated by Hilbert ID. The super-node, one peer elected in each group, forms the higher layer and administrates other peers in the same group by using the load-status table. Based on this system model, the Location-aware Chord Routing (LCR) protocol and the Location-aware P2P Caching (LPC) strategy are proposed to improve system’s performance. Simulation results show the LCR could reduce the hops of routing and save routing distance while the LPC has remarkable performance at lowering the drop-rate of access request and improving the system throughput.

Underwater wireless sensor networks provide a new remote surveillance way to monitor the underwater environment, and have drawn increasing attention in the past few years from both academic and industry. Underwater sensor networks will find applications in oceanographic data collection, ocean sampling, pollution and environmental monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, assisted navigation, distributed tactical surveillance, mine reconnaissance, and submarine surveillance. Plenty of challenges have to be faced during the research, since the nature of underwater environment variable temporally and spatially In this paper, the efficient deployment of surface area for underwater wireless sensor networks was presented. To familiarize with underwater wireless sensor networks deployment, this paper started by providing background information on the architecture and trajectory of the sinking node. Then, a kind of novel inflatable sensor nodes was proposed to make sure that they can have a given trajectory, according to the analysis sinking process of the sensor nodes which tie to the anchor with winch. For a given target area, the reducing of surface deployment area and numbers of nodes is the most significant advantage. To illustrate the performance, the compare was made from two aspects.

Industrial network of the next generation are expected to have augmented capabilities and intelligence within the information-centric paradigm supports. In this paper, a 7-level network protocol is devised with the service-oriented architecture of a 3-tier hierarchical model. Large-scale decentralized resources are abstracted into virtual physical devices first as a primary service provider. Knowledge and services are defined and formulated using ontology models in a modeling layer. Context awareness is used to align attributes and to intensify couplings between different decentralized resources by decomposing and aggregating internal ontology models. Knowledge, services and context make large-scale industrial networks more cognitive and feasible. Through the optimal composition of elementary services, decentralized applications are implemented in the service-oriented architecture. An informational architecture can finally be established using incomplete measurement data and reasoning for large-scale industrial networks.

Next generation sequencing technologies have enabled various entities, ranging from large sequencing centers to individual laboratories, to sequence organisms of choice and analyze them on demand. Sequencing and analysis, however, is only part of the equation: to learn about a certain organism, scientists need to annotate it. Each of these problems is highly parallel at a basic level of computation; however, only a few applications support single parallelization frameworks such as MPI. Because of the overall increasing demand for computational analysis and the inherent parallelism available in these problems, applications should easily run on clusters, clouds, and/or grids (even simultaneously); this would enable labs of various sizes to harness the computing power available to them without forcing them to invest in a particular type of batch system. Here we describe modifications made to one particular tool, MAKER. MAKER is a tool for genome annotation that is provided as both a serial application and as an MPI application. We make modifications to enable it to run without MPI and to utilize a wide variety of distributed computing platforms. Further, our proposed parallel framework allows for easy explicit data transfer, which helps overcome a major limitation of bioinformatics tools that generally rely on a shared filesystem. The distributed computing framework we chose to utilize can be used, even during early stages of development, to run bioinformatics tools on clusters, grids, and clouds. We present an evaluation of our modifications using the Caenorhabditis japonica genome comprising 180 megabases of data and achieve a speedup of 45× using 50 workers.
