The paper presents some results of modelling continuous media problems on computer system with hybrid architecture on the basis of quasi gas dynamic (QGD) equations system. The successful experience in solving a wide variety of gas dynamic problems by means of QGD based schemes showed that they describe viscous heat conducting flows as good as schemes for Navier-Stokes equations, where the latter are applicable. The explicit scheme described here has a Courant stability condition even for very low Mach numbers. So, it is very convenient for computer systems with the hybrid architecture, in particular for GPU-based computers. parallel realization is based on shmem programming technology. The calculations results show good parallelization efficiency.

SPMD parallel computation of a weakly compressible particle-laden jet flow is presented in our paper. The parallel computation is conducted with an explicit finite difference method by the direct numerical method on an IBM Linux Cluster. The conservation equations, boundary conditions, domain decomposition method, and the solving processes are carefully presented. Two-way coupled forces are used to consider the effect of the interaction between particles and fluid. The speedup factor and parallel computational efficiency are presented with different domain decomposition methods. The numerical simulation results are compared carefully with experimental data. To some extent, our DNS code is useful for large-scale particle-laden turbulent flow.

Large engineering design projects comprise very large and complex inventories of critical building components. Managing and searching components within multiple huge warehouses are complicated and time consuming tasks. Prompt availability of the components when there are needed is crucial to avoid the delay of the project, to guarantee the fast maintenance, and to ensure the smooth of the operation. Multi-Wheel Graph Neuron (mWGN) is a single-cycle, light-weight, and scalable associative-memory-based pattern recognition algorithm, and has been implemented over a structured P2P network. We propose the use of mWGN to connect multiple warehouse resources in order to facilitate a speedy and convenient searching of parts. For example an engineer can photograph a component and search to locate the part or obtain related information from using simple devices such as a mobile phone. In this paper, we show the accuracy of mWGN for component recognition and the efficiency of Chord network in linking the warehouses.

For solving linear systems of equations there are several known algorithms. For large linear systems with a sparse matrix iteration algorithms are recommended. But in the case of general n x m matrices the classic iterative algorithms are not applicable with a few exceptions. For example in some cases the Lanczos type algorithms are adequate. The algorithm presented here based is on the minimization of residual solution with subspace decomposition. Therefore this algorithm seems to be applicable for the construction of parallel algorithms. In this paper we describe a sequential version of proposed algorithm first and give its theoretical analysis. The algorithm has some genetic characteristics. After this we will formulate a parallel version of algorithm with subspace decomposition in order to study the details of convergence and the speed up effect of the parallel algorithms. The numerical test results of these algorithms including the speed-up effects of the parallel execution will be shown. The comparison of the classical method and the new approach will also be presented considering the running speed and efficiency too. The computer tests have been carried out with parallel and cluster computing methods as well.

We present the design, implementation and deployment of SPIDO2, a massively parallel out-Of-Core direct dense linear solver used by Boundary Element Method (BEM) codes developed at EADS InnovationWorks, and currently in production in all EADS business units. It is designed as a high performance drop-in replacement for a legacy solver, uniformly achieves very good scalability up to several hundreds cores (>= 80% of peak performance), is portable and takes into account the new context of HPC, leveraging OpenMP and MPI for intra/inter-node parallelism. We provide here a detailed analysis of the algorithms and data structures used to achieve a very efficient out-of-core parallel decomposition (LU and LDLt), including run-time complexity validating the design choices. We then describe the implementation, benchmarks and validation methodology that led to the deployment of this solver in the BEM codes, and we finally provide insights on how we expect this design to be well-suited to the current and future advances in HPC technology.

This work documents two contributions to the parallel resolution of large systems of equations resulting from finite element simulations. 1) The balanced domain preconditioner as proposed by C. Dohrman was reinterpreted as a preconditioner applied to the condensed system of equations. By rewriting the technique in such a matter it can be implemented reducing a cycle of local global communication and reduces the need to communicate the residual and solution vector to interface nodes only 2) An object oriented interface is implemented which greatly simplifies the use of the substructuring technique. Through the interface, the user chooses the number of substructures, the number of threads used during the element assembly process, the number of threads to invert the subdomain stiffness matrices and the number of threads to multiply the substructured stiffness matrix with a vector. The technique was applied to the tree dimensional model of an eight story building and run on a desktop computer with eight cores. The efficiency was evaluated in function of the number of threads and number of subdomains which define the substructures. 3) Results show that the reduced number of interface nodes does not necessarily reduce the global computation time.

This paper presents a novel mechanism of center control channel access (CCCA) in the IEEE 802.11 medium access control (MAC) protocol. The mechanism effectively combines the collision free with the fairly apportioning bandwidth based on demand. It abandons the use of channel sensing and substitutes distributed inter-frame space (DIFS) for short inter-frame space (SIFS) during the transmission period. Moreover, the mechanism based on center control solves the hidden terminal problem perfectly. We simulated the performance of the mechanism. The effectiveness of the proposed mechanism is thereafter validated and the results indicate that it can sharply increase the throughputs, reduce the average delay and packet collides.

Real-time solution of the discrete element method is truly a computational challenge that is hardly achievable on standard PCs, especially when a large number of triangular shaped particles is involved. This paper presents the architecture, including a domain decomposition technique, of a GPU accelerator for the two-dimensional Discrete Element Method for triangular shaped particles based on Antonio Munjiza's Combined Finite Element Method [1]. This approach achieved a speed up of about 240 times on a consumer level GPU compared to a similar algorithm run on a fast desktop PC. This design can also work on GPUs with more computational resource and provides near-linear acceleration. Furthermore, the architecture of this implementation can also be expected to extend well to multi-GPU systems.

A kinetically-based hyperbolic system of equations for multiphase porous media flow simulation is proposed. The continuity equation is modified taking into account the minimal scales of averaging on space and on time, as a result the regularizing term and the time derivation of the second order with small parameters are present in the equation. For approximation the three-level explicit difference scheme with a mild stability condition is used. A computational algorithm of the explicit type is developed to achieve efficient implementation on hybrid supercomputers containing graphics accelerators. Test problem computations show rather high speed-up while running on GPU in comparison with CPU.

Bin-packing problems are complex combinatorial optimization problems included in the category of NP-hard problems of fundamental importance in industry, transportation, computer systems, machine scheduling, etc. The two-dimensional bin-packing problem consists of packing a set of objects (pieces) in the minimum number of bins (containers), where the objects are characterized by having different heights and widths. Recently, some authors have proposed multi-objective two-dimensional bin-packing problems which also consider other objectives to optimize, such as the imbalance of the objects according to a centre of gravity of the bin. The balance in the bin loads has important applications in container loading, tractor trailer trucks, pallet loading and cargo airplanes. This paper presents a parallel memetic algorithm that, using the island-based model, aims to improve the performance of a memetic algorithm when solving single-and multi-objective formulations of the two-dimensional bin-packing problem. Results obtained in several test problems show that, thanks to the capability of the parallel implementation to explore large areas of the search space, it is able to achieve results of high quality in both formulations in comparison with the sequential version of the memetic algorithm and other heuristic approaches.
