Peer-to-peer systems are highly dynamic systems, with permanent changes in their configurations, as peers may join and leave the system with no restriction or control. This makes monitoring an important element for several applications, especially for fault management: fault detection and fault recovery. As the system may have a large number of nodes, we need a scalable algorithm, able to guarantee a fast convergence no matter what the structure of the network is. Epidemic-style or gossip-based algorithms offer solutions for various topics in large-scale distributed systems. Even though they present many advantages due to their property of continuously spreading the information across the system in a reactive and proactive fashion, several problems such as the total number of messages exchanged between peers and the number of rounds required for ensuring the convergence of the algorithm appear. In this paper we present a gossip-based algorithm for monitoring large-scale distributed systems and we analyze its efficiency in a simulated environment provided by OverSim. © 2010 IEEE.

Formal Concept Analysis (FCA) is an emerging data technology that complements collective intelligence such as that identified in the Semantic Web by visualising the hidden meaning in disparate and distributed data. The paper demonstrates the discovery of these novel semantics through a set of FCA open source software tools FcaBedrock and In-Close that were developed by the authors. These tools add computational intelligence by converting data into a Boolean form called a Formal Context, prepare this data for analysis by creating focused and noise-free sub-Contexts and then analyse the prepared data using a visualisation called a Concept Lattice. The Formal Concepts thus visualised highlight how data itself contains meaning, and how FCA tools thereby extract data's inherent semantics. The paper describes how this will be further developed in a project called CUBIST, to provide in-data-warehouse visual analytics for RDF-based triple stores. © 2010 IEEE.

Asynchronous parallel hybrid optimization combining DIRECT and GSS

In this paper, we explore hybrid parallel global optimization using Dividing Rectangles (DIRECT) and asynchronous generating set search (GSS). Both DIRECT and GSS are derivative-free and so require only objective function values;this makes these methods applicable to a wide variety of science and engineering problems. DIRECT is a global search method that strategically divides the search space into ever-smaller rectangles, sampling the objective function at the centre point for each rectangle. GSS is a local search method that samples the objective function at trial points around the current best point, i.e. the point with the lowest function value. Latin hypercube sampling can be used to seed GSS with a good starting point. Using a set of global optimization test problems, we compare the parallel performance of DIRECT and GSS with hybrids that combine the two methods. Our experiments suggest that the hybrid methods are much faster than DIRECT and scale better when more processors are added. This improvement in performance is achieved without any sacrifice in the quality of the solution - the hybrid methods find the global optimum whenever DIRECT does.

cloud computing is an emerging computing paradigm in which IT resources and capacities are provided as services over the Internet. Promising as it is, this paradigm also brings forth new challenges for data security and access control when users outsource sensitive data for sharing on cloud servers, which are likely outside of the same trust domain of data owners. To maintain the confidentiality of sensitive user data against untrusted servers, existing work usually apply cryptographic methods by disclosing data decryption keys only to authorized users. However, in doing so, these solutions inevitably introduce heavy computation overhead on the data owner for key distribution and data management when fine-grained data access control is desired, and thus do not scale well. In this paper, we present a way to implement scalable and fine-grained access control systems based on attribute-based encryption (ABE). For the purpose of secure access control in cloud computing, the prevention of illegal key sharing among colluding users is missing from the existing access control systems based on ABE. This paper addresses this challenging open issue by defining and enforcing access policies based on data attributes and implementing user accountability by using traitor tracing. Furthermore, both the user grant and revocation are efficiently supported by using the broadcast encryption technique. Extensive analysis shows that the proposed scheme is highly efficient and provably secure under existing security models. © 2010 IEEE.

The grid can be described as a distributed computing infrastructure for coordinated resource sharing and problem solving in dynamic, multi-institutional virtual organizations. Since most of the applications in grid computing field fall into interdependent task model called workflow applications and in order to utilize the available resources in grids efficiently and effectively, a lot of research have been made in resource management, especially in scheduling. The main objective of scheduling is the attenuation of application completion time with usage of redundant resources. In this paper, we propose a novel semi-dynamic scheduling algorithm called adaptive dual-objective scheduling (ADOS) algorithm which statically generates the initial schedule using an evolutionary technique and adapts it dynamically as the performance of resources changes. Scheduling is performed by the algorithm considering both completion time and resource usage with changes in performance of grid resources. We also evaluate the algorithm through set of experiments demonstrating that the proposed algorithm delivers promising performance in three respects: completion time, resource utilization, and robustness to resource-performance fluctuations. The performance of the proposed algorithm is measured by implementing it using a grid simulator (gridsim). ©2010 IEEE.

The number of Internet connected PCs is projected to reach 1 billion by 2015, which means several PetaFLOPS of computing power and a storage capacity around one Exabyte able to exceed the one provided by any centralized system. But at the same time the amount of memory needs for the Organization is also increasing day by day for its various needs. Tapping this unused PC memory to organization storage is called Data grid. Data grid depends on a set of widely distributed and un-trusted storage nodes in grid environment. Securing the grid environment presents the distinctive set of challenges. These security challenges must be carefully managed before fully deploying Data grids in sensitive distributed environments. In this paper we propose a cryptographic protocol able to fulfill the storage security requirements related with Data grid. The proposed protocol uses three basic mechanisms to accomplish its goal: (a) symmetric cryptography and hashing, (b) an Information Dispersal Algorithm and (c) "Quality of Security" (QoSec) quantitative metric. ©2010 IEEE.

In a grid computing environment, a grid resource control that considers not only the ability of the computer resources but also the available network resources is needed in order to execute parallel processing effectively. In particular, there is a possibility that the execution performance of a grid application decreases because of the congestion created by two or more flows that are generated on the same network path. Therefore, a network control scheme in a grid computing environment should consider the multiple flows generated from its own application, as well as from other applications. In this paper, we propose a priority control scheme of several flows that are generated simulteneously, in order to improve the execution time of the grid application without reserving a network resources. Moreover, we discuss a method for improving the effect of the propriety control by using path selection that is distinct from the priority flows and other flows. © 2010 IEEE.

Heartbeat mechanism is widely used in designing high availability distributed system, while publish-subscribe architectural style has recently emerged as a promising approach to build a NIDS cluster with high dynamism and plenty of computational resources. In comparison with the requirements of general distributed computing, frontend in NIDS cluster cannot redistribute tasks on nodes failure and parallel stateful intrusion detection additionally requires the integrity of received session packets on analyzers. Therefore, the contradictory requirements of immediate node failure notification and infrequent analyzer status variation should be both considered. In this contribution, we designed one heartbeat protocol with four variations in publish-subscribe framework. By applying probabilistic model checking on the proposed heartbeat protocol, uptime ratio of one node in different variations is computed and compared under different setups. Suggestions on how to choose a suitable heartbeat for a NIDS cluster is described as well. ©2010 IEEE.

Recently, Qin et al. proposed a three-tier Peer-to-Peer (P2P) architecture for real-time file search in distributed networks [8]. In this architecture, indices of files held by the user peers in the bottom layer are stored at the super-peers in the middle layer, and the correlation of those two bottom layers is controlled by the central server(s) in the top layer using the notion of tags. In Qin's system, a heavily loaded super-peer can move excessive load to a lightly loaded super-peer by using a notion of task migration. However, such task migration approach is not sufficient to balance the load of super-peers if the size of tasks is highly imbalanced. To overcome such issue, in this paper, we propose two load-balancing schemes for this architecture, aiming to ensure an even load distribution over the super-peers. The first scheme controls the load of each task in order to decrease the total cost of task migration. The second scheme directly balances the load over tasks by reordering the priority of tags used in the query forwarding step. The effectiveness of the proposed schemes are evaluated by simulation. The result of simulations indicates that all the schemes can work in coordinate, in alleviating the bottleneck situation of super-peers. © 2010 IEEE.
