We present a distributed approach for grid resource discovery, which combines a structured view of resources (single machines, homogeneous and heterogeneous clusters) at the Physical Organization (PO) level with a super-peer network connecting the various POs. The proposed architecture is modular and independent of the particular grid middleware. After a general description, we present some implementation aspects which refer to the Globus Toolkit 4 as grid middleware and to the JXTA platform to set-up the super-peer network. The system is particularly suitable for discovering resources for structured parallel applications on very large grids.

Performance is a key feature of large-scale computing systems. However, the achieved performance when a certain program is executed is significantly lower than the maximal theoretical performance of the large-scale computing system. The model-based performance evaluation may be used to support the performance-oriented program development for large-scale computing systems. In this paper we present a hybrid approach for performance modeling and prediction of parallel and distributedcomputing systems, which combines mathematical modeling and discrete-event simulation. We use mathematical modeling to develop parameterized performance models for components of the system. Thereafter, we use discrete-event simulation to describe the structure of system and the interaction among its components. As a result, we obtain a high-level performance model, which combines the evaluation speed of mathematical models with the structure awareness and fidelity of the simulation model. We evaluate empirically our approach with a real-world material science program that comprises more than 15,000 lines of code.

XtremWeb-CH (XWCH) is a software system that makes it easy for scientists and industrials to deploy and execute their parallel and distributed applications on a public-resource computing infrastructure. The objective of XWCH is to develop a real High Performance Peer-To-Peer platform with a distributed scheduling and communication system. The main idea is to build a completely symmetric model where nodes can be providers and consumers at the same time. This paper describes the different "components" of an XWCH infrastructure and the new features proposed by this platform compared to other similar Global computing projects. It also describes the porting, the deployment and the execution of a phylogenetic CPU time consuming application on an experimental XWCH platform.

To alleviate the burden of writing distributed programs, automatic translation of sequential to distributed programs is highly recommended. In this paper a new architecture to support automatic translation of sequential to distributed programs is offered. A formal specification of the structure and behavior of the architecture components is presented. The applicability of the specified architecture is demonstrated by presenting its implementation details and evaluating the performance of the resultant distributed program.

It facilitates scientific applications to take advantage of computing resources distributed world wide to enhance the capability and performance. The absence of task completion and return timing guarantees from the remote clients in Internet based computing is largely an annoyance when the tasks comprising the shared workload are mutually independent. When the workload's tasks have interdependencies, that constrain the order of execution, the lack of timing guarantees presents a nontrivial scheduling challenge. Such dependencies can potentially engender gridlock when no other tasks can be allocated for an intermediate period, pending the execution of already allocated tasks.
