Split sleeve hole cold extrusion strengthening technology is one of the most commonly used fatigue resistance technology for metal structures. The residual stress field of the hole cold extrusion strengthening structure needs to be analysed, which is an important part of the fatigue life study. Finite element analysis for the 7075 aluminum alloy cold extrusion strengthening plate is carried out in this paper. The effects of split sleeve and reaming process are considered in the analysis process, and the residual stress field at the hole edge is obtained. The numerical results are verified by the experimental results, which show that the two are in good agreement. It is show that the residual stress is the compressive stress near the extrusion hole while the tensile stress far away from the extrusion hole. Additionally, the compressive stress value is the largest in the middle layer, the smallest in the squeeze layer, and the value in the extrude layer is between the two. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. This paper investigated the failure behaviour of medium thick carbon fibre reinforced aluminium laminates (CARALL) panels under transverse local quasi-static contact crush experimentally and numerically. Four types of CARALL specimens with a 3/2 configuration were manufactured by hot-pressing process using two type of aluminium alloys (2024-T3, 7075-T6 aluminium alloy) and CFRPs with different lay-up ([0°/90°/0°]3, [45°/0°/-45°]3). Three dimensional Hashin progressive failure model in quadratic strain form with damage evolution laws defined by subroutine VUMAT based on ABAQUS was used to simulate the composite layers. The bilinear cohesive contact model was used to predict interfacial failure. Aluminium alloys were defined by Johnson-Cook model. Numerical predictions composing of load-deflection curves and failure mode were matched closely with experimental results. The results of the analysis shown that delamination in CFRP/Al interfaces was the initial damage of the tested CARALL panels. Matrix failure occurred after the delamination closely. The maximum load bearing was determined by fracture of aluminium alloy. Fibre breakage was responsible for complete failure of specimens. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. All rights reserved.

The increasing complexity of mechanical systems needs improvement in the methods of computer aided modelling and design. The paper discusses the applicability of metamodelling approach for the development of the problem-oriented languages for the design of mechanical systems. Paper proposes the metamodeling architecture, allowing to derive the domain specific languages (DSLs) having both declarative and procedural components. A case study illustrates a possible DSL and its application for computer aided design of mechanical objects. Expanding the declarative part (geometrical primitives) of the metamodel by the procedural part (methods of computation) makes the process of DSL generation and computer-aided design more effective.

New health protocols have been carried out to prevent, if not, to reduce the coronaviruses' spread, such as wearing masks, keeping body hygiene, and social distancing. One way to keep body hygiene is by spraying disinfectant liquid all over the body before entering a room or office. A safe disinfectant liquid should kill the viruses on the body surface without irritating the skin, and one way to synthesis the safe disinfectant liquid is electrolysis. Real-time monitoring of the liquid during electrolysis is important to get the safe disinfectant liquid. Monitoring Disinfectant (MODIS) based on the Internet of Things (IoT) is proposed to automate the electrolysis process using sensors and actuators. MODIS should conduct two processes simultaneously, which are determining the timing of the electrolysis and assessing the liquid quality. Fuzzy Logic (FL) system was developed to fulfill the needs. The inputs were pH and Oxidation Reduction Potential (ORP), while the outputs were electrolysis timing and liquid quality. A combination of trapezoid and triangle membership functions were used to describe the inputs and outputs. The rules were developed based on chemists' criteria, such as the electrolysis stopped at pH 5 and the safe quality is - 100 to -80 mV ORP. The simulation result shows that the FL system can simultaneously conduct both processes without being disturbed by the other input. For instance, the electrolysis timing was affected by pH data only, and liquid quality was only affected by ORP. In the future, the MODIS prototype should facilitate the FL system's needs to enable real-time monitoring based on IoT, such as by having pH and ORP sensors that can withstand the electrolysis process. © 2020 IEEE.

In this paper, we propose a new three-dimensional (3D) photon counting integral imaging reconstruction method using elemental image merging process for the effective use of the extracted photons under severely photon starved conditions. In previous methods, the photons are extracted from elemental images using Poisson random process and 3D images are reconstructed by Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE). However, 3D integral imaging with photon counting do not use the photons effectively in reconstruction. Thus, it may not visualize 3D objects in severely low light level conditions. In addition, it may not generate high-quality reconstructed 3D images when the number of the recorded elemental images is insufficient. Therefore, to solve these problems, we propose a new 3D reconstruction method for photon counting integral imaging, which can generate high-quality 3D images without photon loss in the reconstruction process. To prove our method, we carry out the simulation experiments. © 2020 IEEE.

Friction is an omnipresent phenomenon in all mechanical systems, inducing uncertainties and acting as a major disturbance in manufacturing technologies and in the field of the micro- and nanoelectromechanical systems (MEMS & NEMS). The effects of friction can generally be compensated in the macro- and mesoscale applications. Multiple concurrent effects of various atomic-scale phenomena in the asperity contacts hinder, however, the prospect of a satisfactory insight into the fundamental tribological behaviour in the micro- and nanoscales. An in-depth fundamental understanding of nanoscale frictional behaviour is, thus, of outmost technological importance. An approach using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is, hence, proposed in this work to study the tribological behaviour in the nanoscale (atomic) contacts. Recent thorough scanning probe microscopy experimental measurements of nanoscale friction on various thin-film materials are thus used as benchmark for MD simulations, allowing to attain important insights into the dynamics of a sliding tip on an aluminium thin-film surface while varying the normal loads. A sound basis for future more complex models, which will include adhesive effects and oxide layers, is thus accomplished, creating the preconditions to deepen further the fundamental knowledge of important tribological phenomena. © 2021 Proceedings of the 21st international conference of the European Society for Precision Engineering and Nanotechnology, EUSPEN 2021. This article presents the design and evaluation of transit networks using a route expansion heuristic and agent-based travel demand simulation. The route expansion mechanism is a type of constructive heuristic algorithm that derives new transit routes by inserting neighbouring nodes into existing routes with the aim of improving the demand coverage. The resulting networks are evaluated with an agent-based travel demand simulation model. The use of agent-based modelling is a departure from the existing route expansion literature and indeed the broader transit network design discipline in which the four step model has been extensively used. There is a need for collaborative urban freight planning and appropriate decision and planning support tools are lacking, resulting in inadequate understanding of how urban freight agents should collaborate and what benefits can be gained from their coalitions. This paper is therefore concerned with including receiver freight agents as autonomous agents into MATSim as a first step towards providing an appropriate decision support system to enable decision makers to determine how a balance between receiver restrictions and urban freight delivery cost can be achieved. The simulation with integrated receiver behaviour is applied to a small case as proof of concept. Results indicate that the newly included receiver agents changed their reordering behaviour autonomously whilst trying to reduce their own cost, confirming that the extended MATSim platform with integrated autonomous carrier and receiver agents demonstrates behavioural sensitivity in the tested scenarios. LS-DYNA software is used to model and simulate the effects of thickness and length of steel casing on the forming status of EFP specifically, and then a theoretical model is established to explain the forming mechanism and calculate the velocity of EFP. The following conclusion can be obtained. (1) The thicker steel cased charge can provide more impulse to the liner in EFP’s forming process. A formula of f(M/C) is fitted to estimate the steel casing effect on the velocity of EFP;(2)In order to get an EFP with higher solidity it is not necessary for the casing to fully cover the liner and charge, and when LC/L0 reaches to 35%, the obtained value of η can be as much as that when the casing fully cover the liner and charge with acceptable velocity range. And 65% of the casing mass can be lightened to reduce the weight of EFP charge structure;(3) A theoretical model to calculate the velocity of cased EFP based on the theory of instantaneous detonation is put forward to explain the mechanism of EFP’s forming process and calculate the velocity of EFP. The research results are significant in the design of light weight EFP warhead, and the theoretical model is easy and convenient of calculate the velocity of EFP with different steel cased charge structure, which can be used to provide reference for researchers in the design of EFP. © 2020 Institute of Physics Publishing. This paper describes the ongoing development of GEMSim, a GPU-based mobility simulator that is systematically designed for generic large-scale networks and population samples. In order to fully exploit the benefits of the massively parallel architecture of GPU hardware, in GEMSim, the structure of the overall simulation loop, the organisation of memory transactions on GPU, data structures on both GPU and host, and the learning process are considered carefully. First results for a large-scale scenario of Switzerland are presented, and show that a whole simulation loop of GEMSim is more than 12 times faster than MATSim, and mobility simulations run up to 58 times faster in GEMSim compared to MATSim. Thus, this GPU-based mobility simulator makes practical advanced traffic simulation and forecasting tools more accessible to planners and decision makers. (C) 2019 The Authors.
