It is proposed that a multistage interconnection network, based on the ″cube″ connection patterns, be implemented as the switch in a distributedprocessing test bed system. The ability to use this network for both the SIMD and MIMD modes of parallel/distributedprocessing is studied. The relationship between this network and other similar networks is described. Techniques for partitioning the network to reduce contention are demonstrated. Ways to implement the network and route data through it are examined. Fault tolerance and tradeoffs between circuit switched and packet switched implementations are discussed.

Distribution brings completely new requirements for processing, synchronization, communication, protection, engineering of distributedapplications. The CHORUS architecture proposes a new approach to meet these requirements; the paper introduces a set of basic concepts and mechanisms essentially focused on run-time aspects of distributed systems.

The application of some concepts on distributed systems to network interconnected data processing machines, each running a virtual machine operating system, is presented. By this approach the concept of ″virtual system″ is introduced. Enhancements to the IBM Virtual Machine Facility/370 (VM/370) to obtain what described are presented, together with some applications of distributed virtual systems.
This conference proceedings contains 55 papers. Fifty-two papers are indexed separately. The topics covered are: distributed systems structure;architecture;semantics of parallel programming;distributed data bases;perf...
