OpenMP, with its extended parallelism features and support for radically changing HPC architectures, spurred to a surge in developing parallel applications among the HPC application developers community, leading to severe energy consumption issues. Consequently, a notion of addressing the energy consumption issue of HPC applications in an automated fashion increased among compiler developers although the underlying optimization search space could increase tremendously. This paper proposes a Random Forest Modeling (RFM) approach for predicting the energy consumption of OpenMP applications in compilers. The approach was tested using OpenMP applications, such as, NAS benchmarks, matrix multiplication, n-body simulations, and stencil applications while tuning the applications based on energy, problem size, and other performance concerns. The proposed RFM approach predicted the energy consumption of code variants with less than 0.699 Mean Square Error (MSE) and 0.998 R-2 value when the testing dataset had energy variations between 0.024 joules and 150.23 joules. In addition, the influences of energy variations, number of independent variables used, and the proportion of testing dataset used during the RFM modeling process are discussed.

It has long been an important issue in various disciplines to examine massive multi-dimensional data by extracting the embedded multi-way factors. With the quick increases in both scales and dimensions of data under analysis, research challenges arise in order to reflect the dynamics of large-scale tensors while introducing no significant distortions in the factorization procedure in sophisticated applications. A massively parallel computing framework, namely H-PARAFAC, has been developed to enable parallel Factor Analysis (PARAFAC) of massive tensors upon a "divide-and-conquer" theory (a modified alternating least squares approach). The hierarchical framework incorporates a coarse-grained model for coordinating the processing of sub-tensors and a fine-grained parallel model for computing each sub-tensor and fusing sub-factors. Experiments have been performed on a GPU cluster, and the results indicate that (1) the proposed method breaks the limitation on the size of data to be factorized, and (2) it dramatically outperforms the traditional counterparts in terms of both scalability and efficiency, e.g., the runtime increases linearly with the data volume increases in the order of n(3).

Heterogeneous architectures with their diverse architectural features impose significant programmability challenges. Existing programming systems involve non-trivial learning and are not productive, not portable, and are challenging to tune for performance. In this paper, we introduce Heterogeneous Habanero-C (H2C), which is an implementation of the Habanero execution model for modern heterogeneous (CPU + GPU) architectures. The H2C language provides high-level constructs to specify the computation, communication, and synchronization in a given application. H2C also implements novel constructs for task partitioning and locality. The H2C (source-to-source) compiler and runtime framework efficiently map these high-level constructs onto the underlying heterogeneous platform, which can include multiple CPU cores and multiple GPU devices, possibly from different vendors. Experimental evaluations of four applications show significant improvements in productivity, portability, and performance.

The load-balancing system, built on the basis of a subsystem load balancer and subsystem control and monitoring that closely interact with each other was propose in work. This system is presented as a queuing system with priority service discipline. In the described queuing system parallel processing flow applications occur in the multiple serving devices and successive junction of them into unified stream is done. The method of multifractal load balancing is submited on the basis of the developed system of load balancing.

Because moving objects usually move on spatial networks in location-based service applications, their locations are updated frequently, leading to the degradation of retrieval performance. To manage the frequent updates of moving objects' locations in an efficient way, we propose a new distributed grid scheme which utilizes node-based pre-computation technique to minimize the update cost of the moving objects' locations. Because our grid scheme manages spatial network data separately from the POIs (Point of Interests) and moving objects, it can minimize the update cost of the POIs and moving objects. Using our grid scheme, we propose a new k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) query processing algorithm which minimizes the number of accesses to adjacent cells during POIs retrieval in a parallel way. Finally, we show from our performance analysis that our k-NN query processing algorithm is better on retrieval performance than that of the existing S-GRID.

Big data refers to processing of enormous amount of unstructured data. The MapReduce and Hadoop are open-source softwares for bigdata applications. The unstructured data are processed using MapReduce framework and Hadoop as an environment, providing distributed file storage for absolute blobs of data. The intermediate data generated are left unstored and hindered in MapReduce framework. Dache refers a cache imbibing the data that is accessed through a request and reply protocol. In this paper, we propose an effective technique for enhancing the performance of Dache by introducing a cache optimization algorithm and a better page replacement technique. (C) 2015 The Authors. An R-tree is a data structure for organizing and querying multi-dimensional non-uniform and overlapping data. Efficient parallelization of R-tree is an important problem due to societal applications such as geographic information systems (GIS), spatial database management systems, and VLSI layout which employ R-trees for spatial analysis tasks such as mapoverlay. As graphics processing units (GPUs) have emerged as powerful computing platforms, these R-tree related applications demand efficient R-tree construction and search algorithms on GPUs. This problem is hard both due to (i) non-linear tree topology of the data structure itself and (ii) the unconventional single-instruction multiple-thread (SIMT) architecture of modern GPUs requiring careful engineering of a host of issues. Therefore, the current best parallelizations of R-tree on GPU has limited speedup of only about 20-fold. We present a space-efficient data structure design and a non-trivial bottom-up construction algorithm for R-tree on GPUs. This has yielded the first demonstrated 226-fold speedup in parallel construction of an R-tree on a GPU compared to one-core execution on a CPU. We also present innovative R-tree search algorithms that are designed to overcome GPU's architectural and resource limitations. The best of these algorithms gives a speed up of 91-fold to 180-fold on an R-tree with 16384 base objects for query sizes ranging from 2k to 16k.(1)

Coarray Fortran (CAF) is a parallel programming paradigm that extends Fortran for the partitioned global address space (PGAS) programming model at the language level. The current runtime implementations of CAF are mainly using MPI or GASNet as underlying communication components. MVAPICH2-X is a hybrid MPI+PGAS programming library with a Unified Communication Runtime (UCR) design. In this paper, the classic implementation of CAF runtime in OpenUH is redesigned and rebuilt on top of MVAPICH2-X. The proposed design does not only enable the support of MPI+CAF hybrid programming model, but also provides superior performance on most of the CAF one-sided operations and the newly proposed collective operations in Fortran 2015 specification. A comprehensive evaluation with different benchmarks and applications has been performed. Comparing with current GASNet-based solutions, the CAF runtime with MVAPICH2-X can improve the bandwidths of put and bidirectional operations up to 3.5X for inter-node communication, and improve the bandwidths of collective communication operations represented by broadcast up to 3.0X on 64 processes. It also reduces the execution time of NPB CAF benchmarks by up to 18% on 256 processes.

We present a novel static analysis to infer the parallel cost of distributed systems. parallel cost differs from the standard notion of serial cost by exploiting the truly concurrent execution model of distributed processing to capture the cost of synchronized tasks executing in parallel. It is challenging to analyze parallel cost because one needs to soundly infer the parallelism between tasks while accounting for waiting and idle processor times at the different locations. Our analysis works in three phases: (1) It first performs a block-level analysis to estimate the serial costs of the blocks between synchronization points in the program;(2) Next, it constructs a distributed flow graph (DFG) to capture the parallelism, the waiting and idle times at the locations of the distributed system;Finally, (3) the parallel cost can be obtained as the path of maximal cost in the DFG. A prototype implementation demonstrates the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed analysis.

One of the major challenges in healthcare wireless body area network (WBAN) applications is to control congestion. Unpredictable traffic load, many-to-one communication nature and limited bandwidth occupancy are among major reasons that can cause congestion in such applications. Congestion has negative impacts on the overall network performance such as packet losses, increasing end-to-end delay and wasting energy consumption due to a large number of retransmissions. In life-critical applications, any delay in transmitting vital signals may lead to death of a patient. Therefore, in order to enhance the network quality of service ( QoS), developing a solution for congestion estimation and control is imperative. In this paper, we propose a new congestion detection and control protocol for remote monitoring of patients health status using WBANs. The proposed system is able to detect congestion by considering local information such as buffer capacity and node rate. In case of congestion, the proposed system differentiates between vital signals and assigns priorities to them based on their level of importance. As a result, the proposed approach provides a better quality of service for transmitting highly important vital signs.
