Nowadays, driven by the consumer demands, the multimedia market is booming and the video coding standards evolve rapidly. A dynamically coarse grain reconfigurable architecture REMUS-II (REconfigurable MUltimedia System 2) is developed as a multi-standards, high resolution, power efficient, and real-time multimedia decoding processor. The hierarchical pipeline is adopted in the REMUS-II for multimedia applications. This paper details the implementation of pipeline optimization techniques for the algorithm and architecture co-design. In each level, the key factors that influence the pipeline performance are analyzed and optimized, including the computational components, the hierarchical memory interfaces, the synchronization mechanisms, and the balanced task assignments. The experimental results show that, compared to original version, the decoding performance of H.264/AVC is improved 2.93 times by the proposed methods. After optimization, the REMUS-II can decode real-time 1080p streams of multi-standards, including H.264/AVC High Profile, MPEG-2 Main Profile, and AVS Jizhun Profile.

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) form communication networks that combine high flexibility due to self-organization within a completely wireless infrastructure and reliability due to the meshed topology. A fundamental aspect to provide dependable communication in such networks is the avoidance of network overload, which might cause significant packet loss and unbounded time delays. For this purpose, admission control mechanisms have been elaborated to determine the available network capacity and the capacity demands for new communication flows. However, even if a precise assessment of the capacity is available, the presence of mobile stations in the network cause a variation of the network capacity. When a station moves, its capacity demands may increase due to a longer path which may incur the violation of QoS guarantees. We propose a scheme to track the capacity demands of mobile stations and consider these on admission decisions. We show that this approach allows to maintain a dependable communication service even in presence of mobile stations and thus improve the applicability of WMNs for dependable mobile applications.

Data-intensive applications are largely influenced by I/O performance on HPC systems and the scalability of such applications to exascale primarily depends on the scalability of the I/O performance on HPC systems in the future. To mitigate the I/O performance, recent HPC systems make use of staging nodes to delegate I/O requests and in-situ data analysis. In this paper, we present the Compactor framework and also present three optimizations to improve I/O performance at the data staging nodes. The first optimization performs collective buffering across requests from multiple processes. In the second optimization, we present a way to steal writes to service read request at the staging node. Finally, we also provide a way to "morph" write requests from the same process. All optimizations were implemented as a part of the Exascale FastForward I/O stack. We evaluated the optimizations over a PVFS2 file system using a micro-benchmark and Flash I/O benchmark. Our results indicate significant performance benefits with our framework. In the best case the compactor is able to provide up to 70% improvement in performance.

Cloud computing infrastructures leverage fault-tolerant and geographically distributed services in order to meet the requirements of modern applications. Each service deals with a large number of clients that compete for the resources it offers. When the load increases, the service needs to scale. In this paper, we investigate a scalability solution which consists in partitioning the service state. We formulate specific conditions under which a service is partitionable. Then, we present a general algorithm to build a dependable and consistent partitioned service. To assess the practicability of our approach, we implement and evaluate the ZooFence coordination service. ZooFence orchestrates several instances of ZooKeeper and presents the exact same API and semantics to its clients. It automatically splits the coordination service state among ZooKeeper instances while being transparent to the application. By reducing the convoy effect on operations and leveraging the workload locality, our approach allows proposing a coordination service with a greater scalability than with a single ZooKeeper instance. The evaluation of ZooFence assesses this claim for two benchmarks, a synthetic service of concurrent queues and the BookKeeper distributed logging engine.

Intra-node architectures for high performance machines have been rapidly evolving over the recent years. We are seeing a diverse set of architectures, most of them with heterogeneous cores. This leads to two important questions for HPC programming: 1) how do we accelerate a single application using a heterogeneous collection of cores? 2) how do we develop applications and runtime systems that maintain portability and performance portability across a diverse set of architectures? By looking at the characteristics of the architectures, we formulate a scheduling problem with non-coherent, non-uniform access shared memory. We have developed several distinct locking free dynamic scheduling methods for such cases, including a master-worker method, a core-level token passing method, and a device-level token passing method. These methods have been implemented on two different architectures: an AMD Fusion APU, and a decoupled CPU-GPU node involving a multi-core CPU and two NVIDIA GPUs, and thus, we provide portability for applications across different types of heterogeneous systems. Using six different applications, we compare different scheduling models against multi-core CPU-only and many-core GPU-only versions. The best CPU+1GPU version has a speedup of between 1.11 and 1.88 over the better of the single device versions. The CPU+2GPU execution further improves the performance by 1.25x to 1.79x over the CPU+1GPU versions. Comparing against the scheduling methods implemented in StarPU and OmpSs, two recent systems for CPU-GPU scheduling, we see 1.08x to 1.21x speedups over the faster of StarPU and OmpSs executions for each application.

Communications on hierarchical heterogeneous HPC platforms can be optimized based on topology information. For MPI, as a major programming tool for such platforms, a number of topology-aware implementations of collective operations have been proposed for optimal scheduling of messages. This approach improves communication performance and does not require to modify application source code. However, it is applicable to collective operations only and does not affect the parts of the application that are based on point-to-point exchanges. In this paper, we address the problem of efficient execution of data-parallel applications on interconnected clusters and present a topology-aware optimization that improves data partition by taking into account the entire communication flow of the application. This approach is also non-intrusive to the source code but application-specific. For illustration, we use parallel matrix multiplication, where the matrices are partitioned into irregular 2D rectangles assigned to different processors and arranged in columns, and the processors communicate over this partitioning vertically and horizontally. By rearranging the rectangles, we can minimize communications between different levels of the network hierarchy. Finding the optimal arrangement is NP-complete, therefore, we propose a heuristic based on evaluation of the communication flow on the given topology. We demonstrate the correctness and efficiency of the proposed approach by experimental results on multicore nodes and interconnected heterogeneous clusters.

In this paper we describe a hardware implementation of the MPI Spawn function of MPI-2 Remote Memory Access (RMA) communication library primitive, devoted to a distributed Multi processing Reconfigurable System on Chip (MP-RSoC). This function enhances the MPI Hardware Communication Library (MPI-HCL) we realized in previous work. Designers can activate or deactivate hardware tasks on runtime, using MPI functions in MPRSoC environment. The advantages are more scalability, efficient power consumption and easier deployment of the parallel application. Our hardware primitives have been implemented and tested on a Xilinx Spartan6 FPGA board.

Hardware Accelerators are playing increasingly important roles in achieving desired performance from desktop to cluster computing. While General Purpose computing on Graphics processing Units (GPGPU) technologies have been widely applied to computing intensive applications, there is relatively little work on using GPUs and GPU-accelerated clusters for data intensive computing that typically involves significant irregular data accesses. In this study, we report our designs and implementations of a popular geospatial operation called Zonal Histogramming on Nvidia GPUs. Given a zonal dataset in the form of a collection of polygons and a geospatial raster that can be considered as a 2D grid, for each polygon, Zonal Histogramming computes a histogram of the values of raster cells that fall within the polygon. Our experiments on 3000+ US counties (polygons) over 20+ billion NASA Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) 30 meter resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) raster cells have shown that, an impressive 46 seconds end-to-end runtime can be achieved using a single Nvidia GTX Titan GPU device. The runtime is further reduced to similar to 10 seconds using 8 nodes on ORNL's Titan GPU-accelerated cluster. The desired high performance opens many possibilities for large-scale geospatial computing that is important for environmental and climate research.

Cloud computing is a new computing model which can share a set of configurable computing resources with users through real-time network. Users hardly have any interaction with service providers, but can take advantage of the resources with the minimum configuring spending. As a kind of integrated model, SOA blends the developing and the integrated process, diminishes the differences of various practical systems and realizes the EAI function with low cost and comprehensive systems. Cloud computing is the further development of distributed computing, parallel processing and grid computing. Based on the Internet, it is a kind of calculation system, which can provide the hardware for various Internet application services, infrastructure services, platform service, software services, and storage service. This thesis discusses the respective advantages and interrelationship of cloud computing and SOA framework, and puts forward the framework of combining SOA and cloud computing model. The framework has the characteristics of application flexibility, the features of easy extension, easy maintenance as well as low cost.
