Research in large-scale distributed systems, such as P2P systems, often relies critically on simulations to validate research results. Though systems such as PlanetLab [15] can be used to test on real networks in some cases, there are still significant practical challenges to evaluating large-scale distributed systems on actual hardware. Actual measured datasets such as the ones measured with King's method [1] also have an important role, but often do not provide enough scale or are not representative of the network for which the research is intended. Typically, in such cases, tools such as GT-ITM [4] are used to generate network topologies for the evaluation simulation. These tools work reasonably well at generating physical topologies that are representative of real systems. The behavior of distributed systems, however, depends not just on the physical topologies, but also the routing policies and other factors that affect latency and bandwidth. These aspects may have a considerable impact on any evaluation performed on the generated network, and can lead to significant differences between simulated performance and actual performance. In particular, triangle inequality violations and path inflation can adversely impact large-scale distributed systems. In this paper, we present techniques and approaches for adding such real-world effects to generated networks, in a parametrized approach. We show the parameters can be varied to generate a variety of networks with different characteristics, and compare them to measured datasets. © 2010 IEEE.

Separable kernel convolution is a fundamental operation for image processing and computer vision applications. Existing parallel implementations of convolution operation convolve a whole image with a separable kernel. While such algorithms are efficient, not all the computed convolutions are necessarily utilized by the underlying application. In this paper we introduce an integrated parallel selective separable-kernel convolution method with adaptive load balancing, for both homogeneous and heterogeneous multi-core processors. The method allows for only computing convolutions at selected points efficiently, making use of partial convolution results computed previously. The method also automatically load-balances the convolution computation among core/processors with different processing speeds. The load-balancing is a hybrid dynamic/static one that adapts load-balancing for sequences of video frames, allowing for fast convolution operation on video streams. Our method is studied on the computation of the Difference of Gaussian operation. Performance assessment results show a remarkable load-balancing reaching 80% of optimum load balance for both heterogeneous and homogeneous processor systems. © 2010 ACM.

The pervasive use of Peer-to-Peer (P2P) systems and the growing demand on personalization for consumers has made future business focus on the niche market instead of the mass market. The recommender system, which is able to timely select data of the interest to each individual user, has become the key to any successful business. However, currently most recommendation systems are based on a centralized architecture;nonetheless, they are not suitable for P2P environments. In this article, we propose a distributed semantic P2P overlay, which can provide music search and recommendation services by considering both of user preference and diversity of interests. We then propose a 3C hybrid recommendation procedure that adapts three traditional filtering techniques to fitting the requirements in a distributed semantic overlay. First, we choose a set of proper meta-data to represent a music object and use them to construct the characteristic-vector-based content filter. Second, a dominant attribute, which is one of the attributes in the characteristic vector of a music object, is used to build the profile of a peer. With the idea of the social network, a P2P profile-based collaborative filter is proposed. Finally, we explore the item-to-item relationship to construct a history-based cooperative filter. We use simulations and a real database called AudioScrobbler, which tracks users' listening habits, to evaluate the performance of the recommendation system. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach compared with existing recommendation systems. © 2010 IEEE.

Todays commercial off-the-shelf computer systems are multicore computing systems as a combination of CPU, graphic processor (GPU) and custom devices. In comparison with CPU cores, graphic cards are capable to execute hundreds up to thousands compute units in parallel. To benefit from these GPU computing resources, applications have to be parallelized and adapted to the target architecture. In this paper we show our experience in applying the NQueens puzzle solution on GPUs using Nvidia's CUDA (Compute Unified Device Architecture) technology. Using the example of memory usage and memory access, we demonstrate that optimizations of CUDA programs may have contrary results on different CUDA architectures. Evaluation results will point out, that it is not sufficient to use new programming languages or compilers to achieve best results with emerging graphic card computing. © 2010 IEEE.

Recently, there has been strong interest in large-scale simulations of biological spiking neural networks (SNN) to model the human brain mechanisms and capture its inference capabilities. Among various spiking neuron models, the Hodgkin-Huxley model is the oldest and most compute intensive, whereas the more recent Izhikevich model is very compute efficient. Some of the recent multi-core processors and accelerators including Graphical processing Units, IBM's Cell Broadband Engine, AMD Opteron, and Intel Xeon can take advantage of task and thread level parallelism, making them good candidates for large-scale SNN simulations. In this paper we implement and analyze two character recognition networks based on these spiking neuron models. We investigate the performance improvement and optimization techniques for SNNs on these accelerators over an equivalent software implementation on a 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad. We report significant speedups of the two SNNs on these architectures. It has been observed that given proper application of optimization techniques, the commodity X86 processors are viable options for those applications that require a nominal amount of flops/byte. But for applications with a significant number of flops/byte, specialized architectures such as GPUs and cell processors can provide better performance. Our results show that a proper match of architecture with algorithm complexity provides the best performance.© 2010 IEEE.

A parallel octree-based mesh generation method is proposed to create reasonable-quality, geometryadapted unstructured hexahedral meshes automatically from triangulated surface models. We present algorithms for the construction, 2:1 balancing and meshing large linear octrees on distributed memory machines. Our scheme uses efficient computer graphics algorithms for surface detection, allowing us to represent complex geometries. Isogranular analysis is performed on a variety of input surfaces and demonstrates good scalability. Our implementation is able to execute the 2:1 balancing operations over 4.0 × 108 octants on 128cores in less than 10 seconds per 2 × 10 5 octants/core. © 2010 IEEE.

Unplanned system outages have a negative impact on company revenues and image. While the last decades have seen a lot of efforts from industry and academia to avoid them, they still happen and their impact is increasing. According to many studies, one of the most important causes of these outages is software aging. Software aging phenomena refers to the accumulation of errors, usually provoking resource contention, during long running application executions, like web applications, which normally cause applications/systems hang or crash. Determining the software aging root cause failure, not the resource or resources involved in, is a huge task due to the growing day by day complexity of the systems. In this paper we present a monitoring framework based on Aspect Programming to monitor the resources used by every application component in runtime. Knowing the resources used by every component of the application we can determine which components are related to the software aging. Furthermore, we present a case study where we evaluate our approach to determine in a web application scenario, which components are involved in the software aging with promising results. © 2010 IEEE.

The values of all the three independent single-crystal elastic constants and polycrystalline elastic constants of Co-3(Al,W) experimentally determined by resonance ultrasound spectroscopy at liquid helium temperature are 15 similar to 25% larger than those of Ni-3(Al,Ta) but are considerably smaller than those previously calculated. Because of the large value of E-111/E-100 and c(y), of Co-3(Al,W), two-phase microstructures with cuboidal L1(2) precipitates well aligned parallel to < 100 > and well faceted parallel to {100} are expected to form very easily in Co-base alloys, as confirmed indeed by experiment Values of yield stress obtained for [001]-oriented L1(2)/fcc two-phase single crystals moderately decrease with the increase in temperature up to 800 degrees C and then decrease rapidly with temperature above 800 degrees C without any anomaly in yield stress.

We explore the multisend interface as a data mover interface to optimize applications with neighborhood collective communication operations. One of the limitations of the current MPI 2.1 standard is that the vector collective calls require counts and displacements (zero and non-zero bytes) to be specified for all the processors in the communicator. Further, all the collective calls in MPI 2.1 are blocking and do not permit overlap of communication with computation in the same thread of execution. However, multisends are non-blocking calls that permit overlap of computation and communication. We present the record replay persistent optimization to the multisend interface that minimizes the processor overhead of initiating the collective. We present four different case studies with the multisend API on Blue Gene/P (i) 3D-FFT, (ii) 4D nearest neighbor exchange as used in Quantum Chromodynamics, (iii) NAMD and (iv) neural network simulator NEURON. Performance results show 1.9x speedup with 323 3D-FFTs, 1.9x speedup for 4D nearest neighbor exchange with the 2 4problem, 1.6x speedup in NAMD and almost 3x speedup in NEURON with 256K cells and 1k connections/cell. ©2010 IEEE.
