Optimization problems arise in a wide variety of scientific and engineering applications. It is computationally challenging when optimization procedures have to be performed in real time to optimize the performance of dynamical systems. For such applications, classical optimization techniques may not be competent due to the problem dimensionality and stringent requirement on computational time. One very promising approach to dynamic optimization is to apply artificial neural networks. Because of the inherent nature of parallel and distributed information processing in neural networks, the convergence rate of the solution process is not decreasing as the size of the problem increases. Neural networks can be implemented physically in designated hardware such as ASICs where optimization is carried out in a truly parallel and distributed manner. This feature is particularly desirable for dynamic optimization in decentralized decision-making situations. In this talk, we will present the historic review and the state of the art of neurodynamic optimization models and selected applications. Specifically, starting from the motivation of neurodynamic optimization, we will review various recurrent neural network models for optimization. Theoretical results about the stability and optimality of the neurodynamic optimization models will be given along with illustrative examples and simulation results. It will be shown that many computational problems, such as k winner-take-all, can be readily solved by using the neurodynamic optimization models.

Consider the following operation on an arbitrary positive number: if the number is even, divide it by two, and if the number is odd, triple it and add one. The Collatz conjecture assert that, starting from any positive number n, repeated iteration of the operations eventually produces the value 1. The main contribution of this paper is to present hardware-software cooperative approach to verify the Collatz conjecture. The key idea of our approach is to sieve numbers n that produces 1 using a circuit implemented on an FPGA. The numbers that fail to be verified by overflow are reported to the host PC. The host PC verifies those numbers using unlimited bits operations by software. We have implemented 24 coprocessors on the Vertex II family FPGA XC2V3000-4. The experimental results show that our hardware-software cooperative approach can verify 2.89 times 10 9 64-bit numbers per second.

Load balancing is an important problem for parallel applications. Recently, many super computers are built on multi-core processors which are usually sharing the last level cache. On one hand different accesses from different cores conflict each other, on the other hand different cores have different work loads resulting in load unbalancing. In this paper, we present a novel technique for balancing parallel applications for multi-core processors based on cache partitioning which can allocate different part of shared caches to different cores exclusively. Our intuitive idea is partitioning shared cache to different cores based on their workloads. That is to say, a heavy load core will get more shared caches than a light load core, so the heavy load core runs faster. We give 2 algorithms in this paper, initial cache partitioning algorithm (ICP) and dynamical cache partitioning algorithm (DCP). ICP is used to determine the best partition when application starting while DCP is used to adjust the initial partition based on the changes of load balancing. Our experiment results show that the running time can be reduced by 7% on average when our load balancing mechanism based on cache partitioning is used.

Like many modern techniques for scientific analysis, flow cytometry produces massive amounts of data that must be analyzed and clustered intelligently to be useful. Current manual binning techniques are cumbersome and limited in both the quality and quantity of analysis produced. To address the quality of results, a new framework applying two different sets of clustering algorithms and inference methods are implemented. The two methods investigated are fuzzy c-means with minimum description length inference and k-medoids with BIC. These approaches lend themselves to large scale parallel processing. To address the computational demands, the Nvidia CUDA framework and Tesla architecture are utilized. The resulting performance demonstrated 1-2 orders of magnitude improvement over an equivalent sequential version. The quality of results is promising and motivates further research and development in this direction.

Layout is an important issue in designing sensor networks. This paper proposes a new approach for energy efficient layout of wireless sensor network. The sensors communicate with each other to transmit their data to a high energy communication node which acts as an interface between data processing unit and sensors. Optimization of sensor locations is essential to provide communication for a longer duration. An energy efficient layout with good coverage based on Genetic algorithm is proposed here. During the process of optimization, sensors move to form a uniformly distributed network. The two objectives taken into consideration are coverage and lifetime. Basically a set of network layouts are obtained. The simulation results also exhibit improvement of performance with increase in number of generations in the algorithm.

P2P networks are self-organized and distributed. Efficient nodes risk assessment is one of the key factors for high quality resource exchanging. Most assessment methods based on trust or reputation have some remarkable drawbacks. For example, some methods impose too many restrictions to the samples, and many methods canpsilat identify the malicious recommendations, which result in that the final results are not convincible and credible. To solve these problems, we propose a novel risk assessment method based on grey theory. In our scheme, the communication nodespsila incomplete information state is described as several key attributes. Original data of these attributes is collected using taste concourse method to avoid malicious recommendation. The analysis and computing example shows this scheme is an efficient incomplete information nodes risk assessment method in P2P networks.

Fuce processor is a variant of CMP processor, which has multiple thread execution cores. The computation model of the Fuce is built on the basis of continuation concept, and its thread-execution unit is realized by hardware logic. Hereby, Fuce achieves the high performance on thread-scheduling. By utilizing this characteristic, Fuce is capable of dealing with quite many simultaneous threads in nature. However, the thread execution unit of the Fuce implemented by hardware logic is too simple to control the precise priority of individual thread. Therefore, Fuse needs some additional software components on the top of its hardware scheduler. In this paper, we have implemented a CMP-oriented software thread-scheduler on Fuce, and evaluate the performance of it.

Node churn can have a severe impact on the performance of P2P applications. In this paper, we consider the design of reliable P2P networks that can provide predictable performance. We exploit the experimental finding that the age of a node can be a reliable predictor of longer residual lifetime to develop mechanisms that organize the network around these more reliable nodes. We propose two protocols, TrebleCast and TrebleCast*, to implement reliable overlay networks. These protocols dynamically create reliable layers of peers by moving nodes with higher expected lifetime to the center of the overlay. These more reliable layers can then be called upon to deliver predictable performance in the presence of churn.

When constructing a virtual machine monitor (VMM), there are two different trends. The first one is trying to make the VMM be self-inclusive, while the second one is to make the VMM part of the host operating system. The former is prefered by independent virtualization provider (IVP) or BIOS manufacturer, and the later is advocated by OS vendors. In this article, after analyzing the implementation of three prevail VMMs, it is argued that: 1) unless the VMM is used as part of the BIOS, being self-inclusive is not a wise decision; 2) overly utilizing the existing functions that the underlying host operating system provides can not produce good solution to the problem of computer system virtualization. The design philosophy, architecture and implementation of Luvalley-lite is introduced to show our efforts to make a balance between reusing commodity OS functions and fitting the virtualization environment well. The approach of avoiding being restricted by the GPL license is also described. Due to the lack of publicly acknowledged performance benchmark, only preliminary experiments are conducted.
