The workshop on cloud computing (WCC) is a workshop focusing on cloud computing and related areas, attracting researchers, engineers, and students from the fields of High Performance computing, Big Data, Systems Architecture, Edge/Fog computing, Serviceoriented Architecture, Virtualization, Security and Privacy, always with an emphasis on cloud computing aspects. WCC is a forum for both researchers and industry practitioners to exchange fundamental advances in the state of the art and practice of cloud computing, identify emerging research topics, and define the future of the area. The workshop organization started in 2016 at the Brazilian Computer Society Congress (CSBC) as a cooperation project. Last year, the 2nd workshop was held in Bordeaux (France) in conjunction with the IEEE 34th international Symposium on Computer Architecture and High Performance computing (SBAC-PAD 2022).

We present a cloud-based time-dependent routing service, which is a core component in providing efficient personalized renewable mobility services in smart cities. We describe the architecture of the time-dependent routing engine, consisting of a core routing module along with the so-called urban-traffic knowledge base, which creates, maintains and stores historic traffic data, as well as live traffic updates such as road blockages or unforeseen congestion. We also provide the crucial algorithmic details for providing the sought efficient time-dependent routing service. Our cloud-based time-dependent routing service exhibits an excellent practical behavior on a diversity (w.r.t. to scale and type) of real-world road networks.

The creation and accumulation of Big Data is a fact for a plethora of scenarios nowadays. Sources such as the ever-increasing diversity sensors as well as the content created by humans have contributed to the Big Data's enormous size and unique characteristics. Making sense of these data has primarily rested upon Big Data analysis algorithms. Still, in one too many cases the effectiveness of these algorithms is hampered by the very nature of Big Data: analogue, noisy, implicit, and ambiguous. Enter Collective Intelligence: the capability of interconnected intelligences achieving ameliorated results in activities than each of the single intelligences creating the collective solely would. Accordingly, this work presents existing research on Big Data and Collective Intelligence. The work is concluded with the presentation of the challenges and perspectives of the common ground between the directions of Big Data and Collective Intelligence.

In this paper we study the problem of automated cloud application deployment and configuration. Transient failures are commonly found in current cloud infrastructures, attributed to the complexity of the software and hardware stacks utilized. These errors affect cloud application deployment, forcing the users to manually check and intervene in the deployment process. To address this challenge, we propose a simple yet powerful deployment methodology with error recovery features that bases its functionality on identifying the script dependencies and re-executing the appropriate configuration scripts. To guarantee the idempotent script execution, we adopt a filesystem snapshot mechanism that enables our approach to revert to a healthy filesystem state in case of failed script executions. Our experimental analysis indicates that our approach can resolve any transient deployment failure appearing during the deployment phase, even in highly unpredictable cloud environments.

A k-nearest neighbor (kNN) query determines the k nearest points, using distance metrics, from a given location. An all k-nearest neighbor (AkNN) query constitutes a variation of a kNN query and retrieves the k nearest points for each point inside a database. Their main usage resonates in spatial databases and they consist the backbone of many location-based applications and not only. Although (A) kNN is a fundamental query type, it is computationally very expensive. During the last years a multiplicity of research papers has focused around the distributed (A) kNN query processing on the cloud. This work constitutes a survey of research efforts towards this direction. The main contribution of this work is an up-to-date review of the latest (A) kNN query processing approaches. Finally, we discuss various research challenges and directions of further research around this domain.

We consider the Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) model for cloud service providers. This model can be abstracted as a form of online bin packing problem where bins represent physical machines and items represent virtual machines with dynamic load. The input to the problem is a sequence of operations each involving an insertion, deletion or updating the size of an item. The goal is to use live migration to achieve packings with a small number of active bins. Reducing the number of bins is critical for green computing and saving on energy costs. We introduce an algorithm, named HarmonicMix, that supports all operations and moves at most ten items per operation. The algorithm achieves a competitive ratio of 4/3, implying that the number of active bins at any stage of the algorithm is at most 4/3 times more than any offline algorithm that uses infinite migration. This is an improvement over a recent result of Song et al. [12] who introduced an algorithm, named VISBP, with a competitive ratio of 3/2. Our experiments indicate a considerable advantage for HarmonicMix over VISBP with respect to average-case performance. HarmonicMix is simple and runs as fast as classic bin packing algorithms such as Best Fit and First Fit;this makes the algorithm suitable for practical purposes.

The polygon retrieval problem is, in essence, the problem of preprocessing a set of n 2-dimensional points, so than given a special ContainedIn spatial query, the subset of points falling inside the polygon can be reported efficiently. Such queries find great applicability in areas such as computer graphics, spatial databases and GIS applications. However, as the size of spatial data grows rapidly existing centralized solutions fail to retrieve the results in reasonable response time. In this paper, we propose a novel MapReduce algorithm for efficiently processing convex polygon planar range queries in a distributed manner. We apply a grid-based and an angle-based partitioning scheme on the data space and perform a comparative analysis. Through our experimental evaluation we prove that our system is efficient, robust and scalable.
