Executing complex time series computations on mobile edge devices in general and augmented reality (AR) devices in particular enables a variety of novel applications. As the complexity of such computations typically exceeds the resources of the mobile device, the task may be offloaded to a remote server. However, the resulting delay of the response substantially impacts the user experience, especially for real-time applications. To overcome this delay, we propose a novel system in which client and server exchange forecasting models instead of simple values. This allows the server to forecast future input values and precalculate the corresponding output. New results can thus be predicted in advance and, considering the communication delay, arrive just in time on the mobile device. The lightweight forecasting models not only reduce the amount of data that needs to be communicated, but also local (mobile device) computation to a minimum. Our results show that we can achieve a medium euclidean distance (MED) error of 0.477 mm for bio-mechanical simulation visualizations, even in the presence of jitter and with a round trip time of 98 ms. Compared to regular offloading, we reduce the MED by 61 % and the number of transmitted messages by 81 %, while providing a better user experience.

The 2nd international workshop on Flexible Resource and Application Management on the Edge (FRAME 2022) is dedicated to the so-called Cloud/Edge Continuum, where Cloud and Edge infrastructures can work together to fulfill requirements from a variety of NextGen applications. Clouds provide appropriate levels of performance to large groups of different users, whereas Edge resources act as a first layer of computing capacity that is closer to the user, to reduce the service latency. With respect to Clouds, Edge infrastructures typically are composed of heterogeneous and constrained resources and introduce new challenges from the viewpoint of security, orchestration and resource management. Tackling these new issues calls for innovative combinations of tools and abstractions, where AI and machine learning techniques complement algorithmic orchestration and optimization, bringing about new levels of distributed adaptivity and self-management. As real-time data-driven decisions can be promptly taken on the spot, without the need to wait for data to travel to the Cloud and back, also interactive and time-sensitive services like the immersive data processing of Extended reality (XR) applications can be partially extended toward the edge, thus exploiting a better computation to communication tradeoff and smoother connections to improve their QoE and remote collaboration. Virtual reality (VR), together with the network infrastructure, can provide an interactive and immersive experience for multiple users simultaneously and thus enables collaborative VR applications (e.g., VR-based classroom). However, the satisfactory user experience requires not only high-resolution panoramic image rendering but also extremely low latency and seamless user experience. Besides, the competition for limited network resources (e.g., multiple users share the total limited bandwidth) poses a significant challenge to collaborative user experience, in particular under the wireless network with time-varying capacities. While existing works have tackled some of these challenges, a principled design considering all those factors is still missing. In this paper, we formulate a combinatorial optimization problem to maximize the Quality of Experience (QoE), defined as the linear combination of the quality, the average VR content delivery delay, and variance of the quality over a finite time horizon. In particular, we incorporate the influence of imperfect motion prediction when considering the quality of the perceived contents. However, the optimal solution to this problem can not be implemented in real-time since it relies on future decisions. Then, we decompose the optimization problem into a series of combinatorial optimization in each time slot and develop a low-complexity algorithm that can achieve at least 1 / 2 of the optimal value. Despite this, the trace-based simulation results reveal that our algorithm performs very close to the decomposed optimal offline solution. Furthermore, we implement our proposed algorithm in a practical system with commercial mobile devices and demonstrate its superior performance over state-of-the-art algorithms. Network traffic simulation is of great significance in testbed for evaluating network security and performance of a system and so on. How to deeply simulate the traffic under the regular load of a business system is a key issue. We designed and developed a distributed container-deployed generator for Web business background traffic. The generator conducts in-depth customized simulation according to the characteristics of the spatio-Temporal distribution of traffic, implements the distributions of user behaviors, and fine-Tune the system by the feedback and adjustment function. The generator also supports distributed deployment in the form of containers. Experiments show that the traffic generator, which is developed on the basis of the open-source load testing tool Locust, can generate realistic traffic under the real load of the system under test, conform to the traffic characteristics in the real environment, and is easy to use and expand. © 2020 ACM.

Future autonomous vehicles will no longer have a driver as a fallback solution in case of critical failure scenarios. However, it is costly to add hardware redundancy to achieve a fail-operational behaviour. Here, graceful degradation can be used by repurposing the allocated resources of noncritical applications for safety-critical applications. The degradation problem can be solved as a part of an application mapping problem. As future automotive software will be highly customizable to meet customers' demands, the mapping problem has to be solved for each individual configuration and the architecture has to be adaptable to frequent software changes. Thus, the mapping problem has to be solved at run-time as part of the software platform. In this paper we present an adaptable demonstrator platform consisting of a distributed simulation environment to evaluate such approaches. The platform can be easily configured to evaluate different hardware architectures. distributed virtual reality technology applied to the joint training simulation needs the CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work) terminal multicast technology to display and the HLA (high-level architecture) technology to ensure the temporal and spatial consistency of the simulation, in order to achieve collaborative display and collaborative computing. In this paper, the CSCW's terminal multicast technology has been used to modify and expand the implementation framework of HLA. During the simulation initialization period, this paper has used the HLA statement and object management service interface to establish and manage the CSCW network topology, and used the HLA data filtering mechanism for each federal member to establish the corresponding Mesh tree. During the simulation running period, this paper has added a new thread for the RTI and the CSCW real-time multicast interactive technology into the RTI, so that the RTI can also use the window message mechanism to notify the application update the display screen. Through many applications of submerged simulation training in substation under the operation of large power grid, it is shown that this paper has achieved satisfactory training effect on the collaborative technology used in distributed virtual reality simulation.

This paper presents the CAT Vehicle (Cognitive and Autonomous Test Vehicle) Testbed: a research testbed comprised of a distributed simulation-based autonomous vehicle, with straightforward transition to hardware in the loop testing and execution, to support research in autonomous driving technology. The evolution of autonomous driving technology from active safety features and advanced driving assistance systems to full sensor-guided autonomous driving requires testing of every possible scenario. However, researchers who want to demonstrate new results on a physical platform face difficult challenges, if they do not have access to a robotic platform in their own labs. Thus, there is a need for a research testbed where simulation-based results can be rapidly validated through hardware in the loop simulation, in order to test the software on board the physical platform. The CAT Vehicle Testbed offers such a testbed that can mimic dynamics of a real vehicle in simulation and then seamlessly transition to reproduction of use cases with hardware. The simulator utilizes the Robot Operating System (ROS) with a physics-based vehicle model, including simulated sensors and actuators with configurable parameters. The testbed allows multi-vehicle simulation to support vehicle to vehicle interaction. Our testbed also facilitates logging and capturing of the data in the real time that can be played back to examine particular scenarios or use cases, and for regression testing. As part of the demonstration of feasibility, we present a brief description of the CAT Vehicle Challenge, in which student researchers from all over the globe were able to reproduce their simulation results with fewer than 2 days of interfacing with the physical platform.
