Emerging applications in the area of Emergency Response and Disaster Management are increasingly demanding interactive capabilities to allow for the quick understanding of a critical situation, in particular in urban environments. A key component of these interactive simulations is how to recreate the behavior of a crowd in real- time while supporting individual behaviors. Crowds can often be unpredictable and present mixed behaviors such as panic or aggression, that can very rapidly change based on unexpected new elements introduced into the environment. We present preliminary research specifically oriented towards the simulation of large crowds for emergency response and rescue planning situations. Our approach uses a highly scalable architecture integrated with an efficient rendering architecture and an immersive visualization environment for interaction. In this environment, users can specify complex scenarios, "plug-in" crowd behavior algorithms, and interactively steer the simulation to analyze and evaluate multiple "what if" situations.

In many real time interactive simulations the problem of interest management is that of filtering updates through application-specified range queries. This 'associative' form of memory access is often implemented more simply as a reference memory access pattern by discretising the n-Dimensional space in to 'cells'. Range queries then being mapped on to this discretised form. In this paper we leverage previous work on optimising communication in reference memory access systems to provide the same optimisation to associative memory access systems. We define possible semantics of range queries and present three designs along with an analysis of the problem in various applications domains and a discussion of the viability of our designs for each problem domain.

Swarm-based systems have emerged as an attractive paradigm for implementing distributed autonomous systems for various applications in commercial, military and business domains. One of the major operations in a swarm-based system is to ensure that the individual swarm units process the tasks in the environment in an efficient manner. This can be achieved using a suitable task selection mechanism that allocates the desired number of swarm units to each task while reducing inter-task latencies and communication overhead, and, ensuring adequate commitment of resources to tasks. In this paper, we describe a multi-agent based distributed task selection mechanism for swarm-based systems. We show that the distributed task selection problem is NP-complete and propose polynomial-time heuristic-based algorithms. Our simulation results show that heuristics in which each swarm unit considers both the effects of other swarm units on tasks and its own relative position to other swarm units achieve better task processing efficiency and improved distribution of swarm units over tasks.

Recent Advances in distributed Source Coding (DSC) motivate the mission-driven wireless sensor network application that relates to compression of multiple correlated sensor outputs, such as real time target tracking and environment monitoring. The characteristic of multiple rates in DSC applications requires the associated sensor network to support Rate-Oriented Routing (ROR) in order to extend the network life time. In this paper, we propose a novel optimal Rate-Oriented Routing based on the distributed Energy Usage Scheduling (DEUS) for mission-driven DSC applications. The ROR adopts a new method called rate assignment instead of the traditional rate adaptation method in wireless networks to extend the network life time. The maximum network lifetime is achieved by constructing multiple rate-oriented paths between the source and sink, which balance the loads and lead to energy-efficient transmissions to meet the DSC application needs. Our simulation has shown that the Rate-Oriented Routing can extend the network life time and save energy significantly under the DSC application requirements. Copyright 2006 ACM.

Privacy violation is a serious and pressing problem for Internet users that requires immediate solution. This problem is very serious for applications that require the user's identity and QoS preferences like IP-telephony and videoconference applications. In this paper, we will identify the risks of privacy invasion during the setup of interactive multimedia applications, and introduce three schemes to solve the problem of protecting the user's privacy, with varying degree of complexities. The first approach is based on the use of a trusted third party;this has been a common approach for the Public Switched Telephony Network (PSTN). The second approach is based on the trust relationship between the communicating parties, and the third approach is based on primitives from the field of secure distributed computation. Large scale Mobile Commerce applications need to be replicated and distributed to offer an appropriate quality of service to a large audience. In this context, a very important question is when and where replicas should be placed. In this article we present a new distribution strategy for applications in Content Delivery Networks (CDNs). It is intended to be used especially for Context-Aware Services (CAS). The main idea is to monetarily value the benefits that an additional replica gains at a certain location and to compare this value with the costs a replica causes. In this way, the replica's contribution to the overall profit is determined. A replica's profit is dependent on the number of requests it receives per time interval. Replicas are only placed at locations where the request rate is high enough to let the profit become positive. In order to react only to persistent and sign ficant changes of the request rate, techniques from statistical-process control are used. The new strategy is evaluated by simulation. The results suggest that it consumes significantly less storage and bandwidth than currently applied alternatives, while offering a comparable performance improvement-for the clients.

GEMSS is a European project that aims at providing high performance medical simulation services in a distributed and grid computing environment. The GEMSS grid middleware is designed using web services technologies and standards and provides support for authorization, workflow, security, Quality of Service aspects. In this work, one of the GEMSS applications, maxillo-facial surgery simulation, is described, which includes a complete chain of tools necessary for the entire process from geometric model generation from scan data to computer simulation and visualization. The Triana workflow environment is utilized to implement the application for uniform access of local processes (e. g. image pre-processing and meshing), interactive tools (e. g. mesh manipulation) and grid-enabled remote services (e. g. HPC finite element simulation). It is concluded that workflow provides benefits to flexibility, reusability and scalability and is potential to become a mainstream grid application enabling technology. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004.

The purpose of this research effort is to design a generic architecture for collaborative haptic, audio, visual environments (C-HAVE). We aim to develop a heterogeneous scalable architecture for large collaborative haptics environments where a number of potential users participate with different kinds of haptic devices. This paper begins with a brief overview of C-HAVE and then proceeds to describe a generic architecture that is implemented over HLA/RTI (High Level Architecture/Run time Infrastructure), an IEEE standard for distributed simulations and modeling. A potential electronic commerce application over C-HAVE is discussed. © 2003 IEEE.

Some international standards have been developed that are very likely to make a major impact on CVE (Collaborative Virtual Environment) technology: the distributed interactive simulation (DIS) (IEEE Standard 1278.1) and the High Level Architecture (HLA) (IEEE Standard 1516). Deriving from military-purpose simulations, DIS and HLA, however, have limitations on building large-scale general-purpose CVE applications. For instance, HLA object-attribute based ownership management only allows joint manipulation in a constraint-based solution. The purpose of this research effort is to realize joint manipulation management in CVE. This paper begins with a discussion of interaction requests and interaction model and proceeds to describe three generic approaches for joint manipulation management: Constraint-based, Synchronized and Non Synchronized.
