Network calculus is a promising theory for analyzing and modeling networks based on min-plus algebra. Using network calculus theory, we propose formulas of arrival curve and service curve for end-to-end communication, build the corresponding time model, and derive the communication delay formulas for two scenarios of the model respectively. Then we take fat tree topology, which is widely used in Infiniband interconnection, as an example to analyze the delay of one-to-all broadcast. This paper, as a groundwork, provides a new approach for the network researchers to delve communication delay in future researches.

This paper presents an improved control strategy for parallel inverters so as to better manage power sharing among the distributed generation units in a microgrid. The proposed control strategy combines both power and voltage control schemes implemented on the voltage source inverters which are used as power electronics interface systems for conversion of power generated by fuel cell and photovoltaic generation units. Dynamic models of the fuel cell and photovoltaic systems available in the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation software are used as distributed generation units present in the microgrid. To evaluate the effectiveness of the developed control strategy, the microgrid is operated in grid connected, islanding and transition modes of operation.

In this paper, we combine digital access to strings with parallel partition to enhance parallel quicksort and quick-select implementations. Previously, digital access had only been combined with sequential comparison-based algorithms and data structures. We present broadly our approach, not only algorithmically but from the design and implementation point of view. Finally, we give some experimental results that indicate its effectiveness in practice.

The behavioral correctness of parallel programs has a pivotal role in computational sciences andengineering applications as researchers draw scientific conclusions from the results generated by parallel applications. Moreover with the advent of multicore processors, the development of parallel programs should be facilitated for the mainstream developers. While numerous programming models and APIs exist for parallel programming we pose the view that more emphasis should be placed on designing the synchronization mechanisms of parallel programs independent from the design of their functional behaviors. More importantly, programs' behaviors evolve (due to new requirements and change of configuration), thereby creating a need for techniques and tools that enable developers to reason about the behavioral evolution of parallel programs. With such motivations, we introduce a framework for automated design/evolution of the synchronization mechanisms of parallel programs.

A Collaborative Development Environments (CDE) provides a project workspace with a standardized toolset to help distributed development teams cope with geographical distance. However, there is a lack of support to reduce socio-cultural distance, which poses practical barriers to the development of connections and shared context/culture between team members. The rise of the Social Web has created several opportunities to publish personal information, often further composed through Web mashups, which can be regarded as a valuable data source in order to establish a shared context among remote developers, with little or no chances to meet. In this paper we present our preliminary work that aims to provide distributedsoftware teams with overall, contextual awareness aggregated in one place. Using the IBM Jazz as CDE, which already provides both presence and workspace awareness, we leveraged the Friend Feed aggregator service to embed personal information about distributed co-workers, collected from social networks. Disseminating additional group awareness information to developers, who have little or no chances to meet, can help to speed up the establishment of organizational values, attitudes, and trust-based inter-personal connections.

The multicore era has brought to an end the trend of doubling single-thread performance with each generation of microprocessors. To continue scaling programmers must parallelize existing single-threaded applications. A lack of tools makes identifying program features and data-dependence relationships that bottleneck parallel performance a cumbersome ad-hoc task. This paper presents SPARTAN, a tool that analyzes single-threaded applications, and points out the data-dependences that are likely to pose bottlenecks to parallel performance. In addition SPARTAN ranks the bottlenecks by giving an estimate of their impact on performance, so that these can be fixed in an appropriate order We validate SPARTAN by showing improved parallel speedup on a benchmark application when the identified bottlenecks are removed.

Although the concept of congruence has been central in the system and organizational design literature [2,5], socio-technical congruence highlights the importance of identifying and tracking the dynamic relationship between social and technical dependencies. This change in focus allows us to make important progress in understanding and improving software development organizations, particularly those that are geographically distributed.
