In this paper, we describe a general approach for dynamic and intelligent reconfiguration of real-time distributed control systems that utilizes the IEC 61499 function block model. This work is central to the development of distributed intelligent control systems that are inherently adaptable and dynamically reconfigurable. The approach that is used takes advantage of distributed artificial intelligence at the planning and control levels to achieve significantly shorter up-front commissioning times as well as significantly more responsiveness to change. This approach is based on object-oriented and agent-based methods, and aims at overcoming the difficulties associated with managing real-time reconfiguration of an intelligent manufacturing system.

Fault Tolerance requirement, which demands the reliability and consistency in compute systems, becomes a hot issue in current distributed object application field. Based on standardized Portable Interceptors mechanism, CARRIAGE system has successfully integrated ORB US, a CORBA implementation developed by the authors and EDEN, a fault-tolerant framework into a whole new Fault Tolerant CORBA system, which uses active replication style to enhance fault tolerance service in CORBA domain with low cost and high efficiency. Practice has identified that this software prototype conforms to the standard specification thoroughly and provides a feasible and convenient way to glue the legacy systems without modifying the original systems or the application programs either.

The Arjuna transaction system began life in the mid 1980s as an academic project to examine the use of object-oriented techniques in the development of fault-tolerant systems;over 15 years later it is now a Hewlett-Packard product in its own right and is also embedded in several other offerings from HP. In addition, many of the original developers of Arjuna have accompanied the system on its journey and had first hand experience in taking this academic research vehicle into a commercial environment. At times the transition has been neither easy nor smooth but it has been interesting from many different perspectives. In this paper we shall attempt to give an overview of how this occurred and illustrate some of the lessons we have learned over the years.

This paper describes the parallelization of a strategy to speed up the convergence of iterative methods applied to boundary element method (BEM) systems arising from problems with non-smooth boundaries and mixed boundary conditions. The aim of the work is the application of fast wavelet transforms as a black box transformation in existing boundary element codes. A new strategy was proposed, applying wavelet transforms on the interval, so it could be used in case of non-smooth coefficient matrices. Here, we describe the parallel iterative scheme and we present some of the results we have obtained. (C) 2002 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

The proceedings contain 19 papers. The special focus in this conference is on Societies, Organizations, Protocols, Interaction Frameworks and Agent systems. The topics include: Representing social structures in UML;diagnosis of the dynamics within an organization by trace checking of behavioural requirements;towards frameworks-based design;bringing coherence to agent conversations;extended modeling languages for interaction protocol design;a policy language for the management of distributed agents;UML class diagrams revisited in the context of agent-based systems;specifying agent interaction protocols with standard UML;modeling early requirements in tropos;a requirement specification language for configuration dynamics of multi-agent systems;expectation-oriented analysis and design;abstractions and infrastructures for the design and development of mobile agent organizations;automated derivation of complex agent architectures from analysis specifications and a lifecycle for models of large multi-agent systems.
With the emergence of agent-oriented softwareengineering techniques, software engineers have a new way of conceptualizing complex distributedsoftware requirements. To help determine the most appropriate software eng...

Some experiences on writing a parallel finite element code on a Beowulf cluster are shown. This cluster is made up of seven Pentium III processors connected by Fast Ethernet. The code was written in C++ making use of MPI as message passing library andparallel extensible toolkit for scientific computations. The code presented here is a general framework where specific applications may be written. In particular CFD applications regarding Laplace equations, Navier-Stokes and shallow water flows have been implemented. The parallel performance of this application code is assessed and several numerical results are presented. (C) 2002 Civil-Comp Ltd and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Cycles and knots in directed graphs are problems that can be associated with deadlocks in database and communication systems. Many algorithms to detect cycles and knots in directed graphs were proposed. Boukerche and Tropper have proposed a distributed algorithm that solve the problem in a efficient away. Their algorithm has a message complexity of 2m vs. (at least) 4m for the Chandy and Misra algorithm, where in is the number of links in the graph, and requires 0 (n log n) bits of memory, where n is the number of nodes. We have implemented Boukerche and Tropper's algorithm according to the construction of processes of the CSP model. Our implementation was done. using JCSP, an implementation of CSP for Java, and the results are presented.
Multiagent systems have been touted as a way to meet the need for distributedsoftwaresystems that must operate in dynamic and complex environments. However, in order for multiagent systems to be effective, they must...
