The 2nd international Conference On distributed Computing systems was held in Paris, France, 8–10 April, 1981. This meeting was organized by the Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et Automatique (INRIA) and the Laboratoire de Recherche en Informatique (LRI), with strong support from the international Committee on distributed Computing of the IEEE. Sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society, A.C.U., A.F.C.E.T., C.N.E.T., C.N.R.S., E.R.O., and the I.F.I.P. Technical Committees 7 and 10, this was the second of a series of conferences which are expected to be held every eighteen months on the subject of distributed Computing. The conference, which attracted more than 500 participants, was divided into the following topical sessions: (1) Opening Session, (2) distributed systems Structure, (3) Architecture, (4) Semantics of parallel Programming, (5) software engineering for distributed systems, (6) distributed Databases, (7) Performance Analysis, (8) Security and Reliability, (9) distributed Scheduling, (10) Local Area Networks Applications, (11) distributed systems in Specific Applications, (12) Languages Constructs & Semantics of parallel Programming, (13) Local Area Networks and Applications, and (14) distributed systems Structure. A detailed report on the conference, with emphasis on topics of special relevance to this Journal, is featured below.

With the development of 3G network and internet technology, the rapid upgrading of internet users. It is a trend that IPv6 supersedes IPv4 and the optical network becomes more widely. Integrating a number of hotspot advanced technologies, the 'wireless broadband application system for IPV6 optical network cloud computing' is a novel system with practical research importance. The cloud computing platform using IPV6 based optical fiber, building wireless broadband local area network using wireless AP, 3G wireless wide area network, connection between wireless broadband network and optical network cloud computing platform to form the IPV6-based optical network cloud computing wireless broadband system; based on this system, the mobile application system for cloud computing can be developed using Android platform. Using distributed storage technology to design corresponding system storage algorithm to store data in the cloud computing system; construction of corresponding data query algorithms to query the system results via parallel processing technology. With the development and application of wireless broadband technology, this research has more important and outstanding status.

These are the joint ?nal proceedings of the 11th international workshop on Formal Methods for Industrial Critical systems (FMICS 2006) and the ?fth international workshop on parallel and distributed Methods in Veri?cation (PDMC 2006). Both workshops were organized as satellite events of CONCUR 2006, the 17th international Conference on Concurrency Theory that was or- nized in Bonn, August 2006. The FMICS workshop continued successfully the aim of the FMICS working group – to promote the use of formal methods for industrial applications, by supporting research in this area and its application in industry. The emphasis in these workshops is on the exchange of ideas between researchers and prac- tioners, in both industry and academia. This year the Program Committee received a record number of submissions. The 16 accepted regular contributions and 2 accepted tool papers, selected out of a total of 47 submissions, cover formal methodologies for handling large state spaces, model-based testing, formal description and analysis techniques as well as a range of applications and case studies. The workshop program included two invited talks, by Anna Slobodova from Intel on “Challenges for Formal Veri?cation in an Industrial Setting” and by Edward A. Lee from the University of California at Berkeley on “Making C- currency Mainstream.” The former full paper can be found in this volume.

Grid and cooperative computing has emerged as a new frontier of information tech- logy. It aims to share and coordinate distributed and heterogeneous network resources fo*** contains the papers presented at the 2nd international workshop on Grid and Coope- tive Computing, GCC 2003, which was held in Shanghai, P.R. China, during December 7–10, 2003. GCC is designed to serve as a forum to present current and future work as well as to exchange research ideas among researchers, developers, practitioners, and usersinGridcomputing,Webservicesandcooperativecomputing,includingtheoryand applications. For this workshop, we received over 550 paper submissions from 22 countries and regions. All the papers were peer-reviewed in depth and qualitatively graded on their relevance, originality, signi?cance, presentation, and the overall appropriateness of their acceptance. Any concerns raised were discussed by the program committee. The or- nizing committee selected 176 papers for conference presentation (full papers) and 173 submissions for poster presentation (short papers).The papers included herein represent the forefront of research from China, USA, UK, Canada, Switzerland, Japan, Aust- lia, India, Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Norway, Greece, Iran, Turkey, Oman, Pakistan and other countries. More than 600 attendees participated in the technical section and the exhibition of the workshop.

This volume presents a selection of papers presented at the 3rd European workshop on Appl ications and Theory of Petri Nets that took place in Villa Monastero, Varenna (Italy) in the period September 27 - September 30, 1982. The I ist of topics included: nets and related models, mathematical analysis of nets, transformations and morphisms of nets, formal languages and nets, parallel program verification and nets, the pro blem of time in nets, programming languages based on nets, applications to distributed systems, applications to realtime systems, software ~~gineering, hardware design and its implementation, recoverability problems, nets and formal semantics; net tools. The diversity of topics on this list witnesses the fact that the researchers from very different areas presented their contributions and discussed various research problems during the workshop. This interaction of scientists looking at the area of Petri nets from very different points of view makes this series of workshops interesting and worthwi le. The volume documents the progress of the research concerning Petri nets during a one year time from the 2nd European workshop held in Bad Honnef in 1981. We think that this was a substantial progress indeed. This observation is even more pleasant if one real izes that during the workshop in Varenna we have celebrated 20 years of "existence" of Petri nets (the seminal work by prof. C.A. Petri appeared precisely 20 years ago). We are very proud to present an invited address by prof. C.A. Petri in this volume.
