This paper addresses compositional and incremental type checking for object-oriented programming languages. Recent work achieved incremental type checking for structurally typed functional languages through co-contextual typing rules, a constraint-based formulation that removes any context dependency for expression typings. However, that work does not cover key features of object-oriented languages: Subtype polymorphism, nominal typing, and implementation inheritance. Type checkers encode these features in the form of class tables, an additional form of typing context inhibiting incrementalization. In the present work, we demonstrate that an appropriate co-contextual notion to class tables exists, paving the way to efficient incremental type checkers for object-oriented languages. This yields a novel formulation of Igarashi et al.'s Featherweight Java (FJ) type system, where we replace class tables by the dual concept of class table requirements and class table operations by dual operations on class table requirements. We prove the equivalence of FJ's type system and our co-contextual formulation. Based on our formulation, we implemented an incremental FJ type checker and compared its performance against javac on a number of realistic example programs.

This paper presents preliminary results on the design of an object Coprocessor (OCP) cooperating with a RISC-architecture processor (ARM7, by Advanced RISC Machines Ltd.). This coprocessor implements in hardware some low-level processing and control steps required by the object-oriented model. The processor and the OCP constitute a processing architecture whose extended instruction set features "object" treatment capabilities. Some special coprocessor instruction codes ("object Instructions") have been introduced. Concepts such as "Polymorphism" and "Virtual methods" are supported at the hard-ware level. Preliminary results using typical object-oriented sequences show a gain in speed over a pure software implementation, on the same RISC machine. The specific design presented here refers ton prototype implementation that is currently under development and supported by the european Union Esprit Project (7517 SUMIS).

In recent years, multiple vulnerabilities exploiting the serialisation APIs of various programming languages, including Java, have been discovered. These vulnerabilities can be used to devise injection attacks, exploiting the presence of dynamic programming language features like reflection or dynamic proxies. In this paper, we investigate a new type of serialisation-related vulnerabilities for Java that exploit the topology of object graphs constructed from classes of the standard library in a way that deserialisation leads to resource exhaustion, facilitating denial of service attacks. We analyse three such vulnerabilities that can be exploited to exhaust stack memory, heap memory and CPU time. We discuss the language and library design features that enable these vulnerabilities, and investigate whether these vulnerabilities can be ported to C#, Java- Script and Ruby. We present two case studies that demonstrate how the vulnerabilities can be used in attacks on two widely used servers, Jenkins deployed on Tomcat and JBoss. Finally, we propose a mitigation strategy based on contract injection.

This report summarizes the presentations and discussions of the Third Workshop on Models and Aspects Handling Crosscutting Concerns in MDSD, held in conjunction with the 21st european conference on object-oriented programming (ecoop) in Berlin, Germany on July, 31, 2007. This workshop was motivated by the fact that both Model-Driven Software Development (MDSD) and Aspect-oriented Software Development (AOSD) are important new paradigms that both promise to change the way software is developed. Both approaches provide opportunities for concern separation. AOSD separates concerns horizontally and MDSD enables concern separation vertically. This workshop identified two key integration strategies to achieve the complementary benefits of both aspect-oriented and model-driven development. The first is the use of aspects within transformation languages to separate transformational concerns making model transformations easier to write. The second is the separation of concerns within models defined as aspects. This workshop established the key benefits of these. The major benefit of the first is easing the complexity of development and maintainability of transformations. The major benefit of the second is means to reduce the problems associated with aspects, such as, aspect interactions, fragile pointcuts and understandability. © 2008 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Several active object-oriented database systems have been developed to address the needs of applications with complex requirements and time execution constraints (e.g. computer integrated manufacturing). However, no comprehensive and integrated modeling approach has been described for conceptually modeling active object-oriented database applications. This paper deals with these issues by extending the research of object-oriented methods with an integrated approach, called A/OODBMT (Active object-oriented Database Modeling Technique), which integrates and extends the object Modeling Technique (OMT) method for conceptually designing active object-oriented database applications. A/OODBMT models database applications by defining and integrating four new types of models, namely the nested object model (NOM), the behavior model (BM), the nested rule model (NRM), and the nested event model (NEM). The nested object model extends the OMT object model by adding nesting capabilities, and by providing a better abstraction mechanism for developing database applications in multi-level diagrams. Moreover, the nested object model adds rules to classes to specify their active behavior. The behavior model combines the dynamic and the functional modeling techniques proposed in the OMT method. In addition, the behavioral model represents database transactions through transaction diagrams. The nested rule model supports a comprehensive set of rules and visually defines the rules and their interactions using multi-level diagrams. The nested event model supports a comprehensive set of events and visually represents them in the context of rules. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 1996.

Autonomous vehicles must navigate independently in an outdoor environment using features or objects. However, some objects may be more or less suitable for localization due to their attributes. Therefore, this work investigates the suitability of landmarks for camera- and object-based outdoor localization methods. First, object attributes are methodically derived from the requirements of object-based localization. The physical representation on the camera image plane, probability of occurrence, and persistence were identified as influencing the object localization suitability. The influence of the object's camera image plane representation regarding object recognition algorithms is not considered or discussed, but advice on the minimum object pixel size is provided. The first milestone was the creation of an equation for object localization suitability calculation by normalizing and multiplying the identified attributes. Simultaneously, potential objects from the outdoor environment were identified, resulting in a structured object catalog. The results of the equation and catalog are a ranked according to the object localization suitability in a comparison table. Our comparison demonstrates that objects such as buildings or trees are more suitable than street lane markings for self-localization. However, most current datasets do not include the proposed instantiated objects. The paper addresses this issue, assists in the object selection for outdoor localization methods and provides input for the creation of future-oriented datasets and autonomous driving maps.
