QUIC is a UDP-based transport protocol, standardized in RFC9000 (2021). It enhances privacy by encrypting entire packets and offers improvements over TCP, such as native multiplexing and connection migration. Despite these advantages, QUIC, like TCP, suffers from head-of-line blocking and variable latency, making it unsuitable for critical real-timesystems. RFC9221 addresses this by introducing an extension that allows QUIC to transmit datagrams without retransmission, improving its suitability for real-time applications. However, real-timenetworks require a thorough evaluation of QUIC's performance. The potential delays caused by its cryptographic operations and the complex traffic patterns it generates could impact time-sensitive traffic. We conduct experiments using Mininet across a range of scenarios, including software updates in bandwidth-constrained environments and in the presence of malicious nodes. Additionally, we assess implementations in both Go and C. The performance of QUIC, along with its datagram extension, is compared against UDP and DTLS. Finally, the results are validated through testing on a physical network testbed. Our results show that, despite its cryptographic overhead, QUIC performs similarly to UDP and DTLS in most cases. However, it may interact poorly with lower-layer mechanisms like token-bucket filters. Overall, QUIC shows potential to replace older transport protocols in real-timesystems.

Modeling queueing networks in random environments is a challenging problem that finds application in routing, reliability analysis, and evaluation of systems processing bursty workloads. In this paper, we introduce a method to evaluate closed queueing networks in random environments that can deal with non-Markovian transitions among environment stages and accurately approximate time-averaged performance metrics. Our technique supports both state-independent and state-dependent random environments, the latter allowing us to analyze challenging queueing network models with bursty service processes. Using simulation on representative case studies, we show that our technique provides low approximation errors. We further demonstrate the applicability of our result to a mobility case study demonstrating the applicability of the proposed approach.

Recent works have shown that Machine Learning (ML) models can be deployed in P4-programmable user planes for line rate inference on live traffic and that these user planes can also be used to accelerate the 5G User Plane Function (UPF). This work builds on these capabilities to explore how ML inference in the user plane can facilitate real-time intrusion detection in 5G networks. As a proof-of-concept, we describe how an ML model could be deployed into the UPF as a special Packet Detection Rule (PDR). We then train and deploy a tree-based classifier into a P4-programmable switch acting as the UPF and conduct experiments on a testbed with off-the-shelf hardware using experimental data from a 5G test network on a university campus. Our results confirm that running ML-based intrusion detection on P4-based UPFs ensures line-rate attack detection and classification with an accuracy of up to 98% in terms of F1 score, while keeping switch resource consumption increase under control.
