This paper presents the Mobile Intelligence Team's approach to addressing the CANINE outdoor ground robot competition. The competition required developing a robot that provided retrieving capabilities similar to a dog, while operating fully autonomously in unstructured environments. The vision team consisted of Mobile Intelligence, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and Wayne State University. Important computer vision aspects of the project were the ability to quickly learn the distinguishing characteristics of novel objects, searching images for the object as the robot drove a search pattern, identifying people near the robot for safe operations, correctly identify the object among distractors, and localizing the object for retrieval. The classifier used to identify the objects will be discussed, including an analysis of its performance, and an overview of the entire system architecture presented. A discussion of the robot's performance in the competition will demonstrate the system's successes in real-world testing.

Most current lens distortion models use only a few terms of Brown's model, which assumes that the radial distortion is dependant only on the distance from the distortion centre, and an additive tangential distortion can be used to correct lens de-centering. This paper shows that the characterization of lens distortion can be improved by over 79% compared to prevailing methods. This is achieved by using modern numerical optimization techniques such as the Leapfrog algorithm, and sensitivity-normalized parameter scaling to reliably and repeatably determine more terms for Brown's model. An additional novel feature introduced in this paper is to allow the distortion to vary not only with polar distance but with the angle too. Two models for radially asymmetrical distortion (i.e. distortion that is dependant on both polar angle and distance) are discussed, implemented and contrasted to results obtained when no asymmetry is modelled. A sample of 32 cameras exhibiting extreme barrel distortion (due to their 6.0mm focal lengths) is used to show that these new techniques can straighten lines to within 7 hundredths of a pixel RMS over the entire image.

Biomimetics focuses on making nature as a model of inspiration that would immensely help conscious abstraction of new principles and ideas, foster innovative design collections, find out new techniques and functionalities, seek new paradigms and methods, develop new materials, and design new streams of intelligent machines, robots, systems, devices, algorithms, etc. Biomimetics incorporates materials, concepts and techniques drawn from naturally made substances, and resembles biological systems in structure, mechanism and/or function as necessary. Smart materials are the foundation supporting the development of new biomimetic based technology. Wide range of biologically inspired robots and intelligent systems has been developed. However, engineering such biomimetic intelligent creatures were hampered by physical and technological constraints, and it is still a challenge. Making robots and intelligent machines that are actuated by biologically inspired artificial muscles would create new reality with great potentials. This paper provides the concept and the importance of Biomimetic as an interdisciplinary field. In addition, the paper introduces and discusses scientific ideas and directions of research activities in the field. The paper presents key development in the field of Biomimetic robots, and finally it underlines the potential of the field and the challenges facing it.

Face recognition has received increasing attention during the past decade as one of the most promising applications of image analysis and processing. One emerging application field is Human-Machine Interaction involving robotic vision. For many applications in this field (including face identification and expression recognition) the precision of facial feature detection and the computational burden are both critical issues. This paper presents a completely tunable hybrid method for accurate face localization based on a quick-and-dirty preliminary detection followed by a 2D tracking. Our technique guarantees complete control over the performance/result quality ratio and can be successfully applied to intelligent robotic vision. We use our approach to design a Robotic vision Architecture capable of selecting from a set of strategies to obtain the best results.

The intelligent Ground Vehicle Competition (IGVC) is one of three, unmanned systems, student competitions that were founded by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) in the 1990s. The IGVC is a multidisciplinary exercise in product realization that challenges college engineering student teams to integrate advanced control theory, machine vision, vehicular electronics, and mobile platform fundamentals to design and build an unmanned system. Teams from around the world focus on developing a suite of dual-use technologies to equip ground vehicles of the future with intelligent driving capabilities. Over the past 14 years, the competition has challenged undergraduate, graduate and Ph.D. students with real world applications in intelligent transportation systems, the military and manufacturing automation. To date, teams from over 50 universities and colleges have participated. This paper describes some of the applications of the technologies required by this competition and discusses the educational benefits. The primary goal of the IGVC is to advance engineering education in intelligent vehicles and related technologies. The employment and professional networking opportunities created for students and industrial sponsors through a series of technical events over the three-day competition are highlighted. Finally, an assessment of the competition based on participant feedback is presented.

In a machine vision-based guidance system, a camera must be corrected precisely to calculate the position of vehicle, however, it is not easy to obtain the intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of the camera, while neural nets have the advantage to set up a mapping relationship for a nonlinear system. We intended to use the CMAC neural net to construct two map relationships: image coordinates and offsets of the vehicle, and image coordinates and the heading angle of the vehicle. The net inputs were the coordinates of top and bottom points in the detected guidance line in the image coordinate system. The outputs were offsets and heading angles. The verified results show that the RMS of inferred offset is 10.5 mm, and the STD is 11.3 mm;the RMS of inferred heading is 1.1 degrees, and the STD is 0.99 degrees.

License plate recognition systems become the key to many traffic related applications such as road traffic monitoring or parking lots access control. In this paper, a software and hardware architecture implemented in the ESPRIT 5184 LOCOMOTIVE project for automatic vehicle plate number identification is presented. The system, developed in order to dynamically recognize symbol clusters on moving objects, presents as main contribution the integration of different computer vision techniques related to intrusion detection and automatic pattern recognition in slightly controlled environments, keeping real time operation.
