A new understanding of product complexity is described as a determinant of software development time. A complexity estimation method for software is proposed taking different factors into consideration. Grey measurement technique is used for complexity estimation and complexity measurements of five software products are presented. the results of these measurement show that grey complexity measurement results are linearly related to the number of main functions of software products. © 2013 IEEE.

Domain engineering is the first phase of product line engineering. the key artefact created by domain engineering for product engineering is a reference architecture for all possible systems or products in the domain. In existing domain engineering techniques, there are no well-defined methods for constructing reference architectures. Existing domain engineering tools mostly stop short of constructing reference architectures. In this paper, we show how a component-based approach to domain engineering can provide a remedy. © 2013 IEEE.

Model-driven software engineering is supported with the help of model transformations. At present, the technology for defining and executing uni-directional batch transformations seems to be well developed, while bi-directional and incremental transformations are more difficult to handle. In this paper, we present a bi-directional and incremental transformation tool for round-trip engineering between class diagrams and Java source code. Our focus lies on the model-driven construction of this tool with the help of a set of model transformation tools. thus, our work serves as a case study of applying and composing existing model transformation tools. © 2013 IEEE.

Decision making in software engineering requires the consideration of risk information. the reliability of risk information is strongly influenced by the underlying risk estimation process which consists of the steps risk identification, risk analysis and risk prioritization. In this paper we present a novel risk estimation tool for software engineering pruposes called RisCal. RisCal is based on a generic risk model and supports the integration of manually and automatically determined metrics into the risk estimation. this makes the tool applicable for arbitrary software engineering activities like risk-based testing or release planning. We show how RisCal supports risk identification, analysis and prioritizations, provide an estimation example, and discuss its application to risk-based testing and release planning. © 2013 IEEE.

Functional Quality Attributes (FQAs) are quality attributes that have strong functional implications and so can be easily modeled by software components. thus, we use an aspect-oriented software product line approach, to model the commonalities and variabilities of FQAs from the early stages of the software development. However, FQAs cannot be modeled in isolation since they usually have dependencies and interactions between them. In this paper we focus on identifying and modeling the dependencies among different FQAs. these dependencies are automatically incorporated into the final software architecture of the system under development, even when the software architect may be unaware of them. © 2013 IEEE.

the method presented in this paper, software module real-time target (SMRT), aim to make code generated by Simulink Coder easy to include into a real-time embedded code project. It is intended to give developers experienced in embedded programming better control and flexibility when using Simulink Coder, without having to understand the code generation process. A general methodology, SMRT, has been defined, and a library for using SMRT has been implemented for Xenomai Linux. the library can be modified for other operating systems. this solution has been tested on a Beagle bone development board and used in the development of a robot prototype. © 2013 IEEE.

In this paper, we demonstrate our Img2UML system tool. this system tool eliminates the gap between pixel-based diagram and engineering model, that it supports the extraction of the UML class model from images and produces an XMI file of the UML model. In addition to this, Img2UML offers a repository of UML class models of images that have been collected from the Internet. this project has both industrial and academic aims: for industry, this tool proposals a method that enables the updating of software design documentation (that typically contains UML images). For academia, this system unlocks a corpus of UML models that are publicly available, but not easily analyzable for scientific studies. © 2013 IEEE.

Predicting the effort, duration and cost required to develop and maintain a software system is crucial in IT project management. Although an accurate estimation is invaluable for the success of an IT development project, it often proves difficult to attain. this paper presents an empirical evaluation of four parametric software estimation models, namely COCOMO II, SEER-SEM, SLIM, and True Planning, in terms of their project effort and duration prediction accuracy. Using real project data from 51 software development projects, we evaluated the capabilities of the models by comparing the predictions with the actual effort and duration values. the study showed that the estimation capabilities of the models investigated are on a par in accuracy, while there is still significant room for improvement in order to better address the prediction challenges faced in practice. © 2013 IEEE.

this paper presents automatic generation of fast and accurate timed models of streaming embedded applications, before the complete software-hardware platform is available. First, a measurement model is generated and executed, on the target processor, to predict the computation delays in the application. Next, the stochastic delays are annotated to the application code to generate a host-compiled model of the application. Our experiments show that such models can be generated and simulated in seconds to accurately predict the computation load offered by the application. Our results with large streaming media applications, such as music and voice codecs, show that the estimation errors are less than 3.3%, while providing very high simulation speed. therefore, using our models, embedded system designers can perform early optimizations to the system architecture with high confidence. © 2013 IEEE.
