Instrumentation amplifiers (IA) used in wearable biomedical monitoring systems have to satisfy several performance requirements, such as low-voltage supply and low-power consumption, enabling increased portability. In the same time, a very important feature is wide range parameter programmability. this paper proposes a solution to implement electronic gain programming into an IA. the proposed solution is developed around the current balancing concept. An electronically tunable transconductance amplifier is used for adjusting the IA voltage gain as a function of the transconductor bias currents. Additionally, the proposed IA outputs a differential signal, useful for latter differential analog signal processing. Simulation results validate the proposed IA.

During the last few decades complex programmable circuits have seen a widespread usage in various digital circuit applications. One prominent example are Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Teaching FPGA technology has become an integral part of introductory digital logic courses. However, implementing Boolean functions in this technology requires understanding of several steps that are not trivial, including Boolean function decomposition, mapping the design into physical programmable units and routing. We have developed a portable Java-based tool which allows students to experiment with the required steps for arbitrary Boolean functions and to simulate the obtained implementation. In this paper, we give an overview of the developed tool and discuss its usage in class.

In this paper a routing algorithm for MANETs is presented, based on the formation of servicing zones and determination of nodes in these zones as default gateways. the idea behind this approach is to gain power efficiency and sustainability of the network. the proposed approach reduces the overall number of broadcasts in the network and ensures a reliable and energy efficient connection, by balancing the load among the nodes. the algorithm could be considered as a hybrid type of routing mechanism, incorporating multipath hop-by-hop distributed routing. We apply a time slot based self-organizing and self-routing approach by the application of a network model with universal basic node properties. For each node we define two functional and one generic property. the algorithm has the logic of non-cooperative routing based on the evaluation of the defined basic properties of the nodes. the major advantages of the algorithm are related to the complexity and the reduced overall routing cost, especially in higher density networks.

this paper reports extensive simulations of the dynamic routing techniques for optical burst switching (OBS) networks. It gives a summary of the already proposed algorithms and describes more broadly some of them. It introduces also a new one called the Weighted Link Congestion and Frequency (WLCF) algorithm. Our comparative simulations are performed using an in-house developed environment in which all the OBS mechanisms are implemented in detail. Considering various network topologies and traffic scenarios, we show that basically WLCF performs better than other routing strategies in terms of mean burst blocking probability averaged over the whole network, and, thus, increases the overall network throughput.

Over the past years the use of digital devices has increased and home networks continue to grow in size and complexity. By the use of virtualized residential gateways advanced functionality can be moved away from the home by extending the customers edge network to the Internet Service Provider (ISP) and thereby decrease the administrative burden for the home user. By employing edge computing and cloud applications at the operator by virtualizing residential gateways instead of using physical devices creates new challenges. this paper is looking at how the choice of virtualization technology impacts performance by investigating operating system level virtualization in contrast to full virtualization for use in virtualized residential gateways. Results show that container based virtualization uses fewer resources in terms of disk, memory, and processor in virtualized residential gateways.

Fractional calculus has many implications for the field of signal processing, particularly in filter design. Fractional order filter functions are generalization of all rational filter structures including integer-order filter functions and it provides more options in term of frequency selectivity property. this study presents application of stochastic optimization methods for the improvement of IIR filter discretization of fractional order continuous filter structures. We used results of well-known fractional order discretization methods as initial filter model and improved the amplitude response of discrete filter for a better fitting to the continuous fractional-order filters. Illustrative examples demonstrate that it is possible to further improve amplitude responses of IIR filter discretization obtained for the fractional order differentiators, the first and second order continuous fractional-order filter structures by using basic random search algorithms. Digital filter design is very essential for digital signal processing applications and findings of this paper may contribute to digital filter design field in practice.

In event-driven programming we can react to an event by binding methods to it as handlers, but such a handler binding in current event systems is explicit and requires explicit reason about the graph of event propagation even for straightforward cases. On the other hand, the handler binding in reactive programming is implicit and constructed through signals. Recent approaches to support either event-driven programming or reactive programming show the need of using both the two styles in a program. We propose an extension to expand event systems to support reactive programming by enabling the automation of handler bindings. With such an extension programmers can use events to cover both the implicit style in reactive programming and the explicit style in event-driven programming. We first describe the essentials of reactive programming, signals and signal assignments, in terms of events, handlers, and bindings, then point out the lack of automation in existing event systems. Unlike most research activities we expand event systems to support signals rather than port signals to event systems. In this paper we also show a prototype implementation and translation examples to evaluate the concept of automation.

C language is a required course in information science. Students not only need to develop a strong interest in the subject, but also lay a good foundation for C language in studies. the discipline plays a very important role in professional courses, and therefore we need to provide a pleasant environment in which students can complete the fundamental C exercise. Pair programming reduces the pressure of solving a task because in pair programming two programmers tackle the challenge not just one programmer. Moreover, pair programming makes it easy to start a discussion of the subject even if two programmers have different levels because this is the fundamental C exercise. In this study, we design an experiment featuring the pair programming technique to enhance communication in the fundamental C exercise. the experimental results show that pair programming is an effective tool for enhancing communication in the fundamental C exercise.

this paper describes an Erasmus Intensive Programme that used international collaboration as a novel pedagogical approach to teaching programming skills to first-year students in a blended learning context using a mixture of virtual environment and intensive teaching. the experience and outcomes of the Programme are evaluated from the viewpoints of the students and instructors and conclusions are drawn on the value and conduct of international student collaborations.
